I have been having an intermittent code 22 for a long while now. I was thinking it was a grounding issue since this would go away after a while. I was dreading having to look for such an issue in a mess of wires. Then I come across this video. I first do his test of jumping those two wires. I got the codes 21 & 22, telling me the ground issue is not in the wires. He next advice is to check for corrosion on the contacts. While, I did not see any corrosion, I went ahead and sprayed both sets of contacts profusely with electrical contact cleaner. Dr Eugene Portal is right, this the most important sensor! The contact cleaner worked! Not only did the code 22 go away, the engine not only idles, runs, and accelerates smoother the transmission also shifts smoother! I was ready to trade this in a lot sooner than I was ready to.
I got the same exact issue as you. And I did the same thing. Got those two codes confirming that the wires are good. I'm going to try cleaning the terminals. Mine don't appear to have any noticeable corrosion either. I'm also going to replace the sensor with a ACDelco oem. I don't if it's possible to get two bad parts back to back. But it's possible when things are made in China according to my local mechanic. Because that's been their experience with parts lately.. 😂
This video helped me immensely, too bad I didn’t find it BEFORE I changed out my ICM that’s 50 bucks I won’t get back lol but heads up if you don’t have an obd1 scanner you can still check codes by jumping the top right two terminals on the diagnostic port, turn on the key, you’ll get code 12 3 times with cel flashes 1 time followed by 2 flashes to indicate it’s in diagnostic mode, and then using this video I got 2 flashes and 2 flashes (22 - tps low volt) with tps plugged in, then jumped the two wires you said and started truck repeated and got code 21. Thanks brother!
Nice Video. I have a "Historic code" 22 on a 454 marine engine and have not been able to find a simple way to test it until now !! Thank you very much. I am grateful and will be a checkin tomorrow!!!
Get a Actron CP9690 code tester. It does live, record, graphing, oil light reset, smog test readiness test, code reset, ABS, and MORE! It has OBDI cables for Ford, G.M., Chrysler and 2 Toyota cables. It has OBDII cable. It has a cigarette lighter cable. Get a cigarette lighter cable for 12v hookup to the battery. It has code connect to troubleshoot symptoms which are ASE certified mechanic solutions for problems. It works on 1983-2012 cars out of the box. It is updatable.
This is good advice but I think it’s worth mentioning that you should measure the reference voltage before jumping the reference to the signal...if your 5v wire had 12V due to a short you would’ve killed your PCM
perfect video thank you very much.. i was wondering why i killed a qtr and change on my tank on a 60 mile round trip. guess i know what im doing this weekend smh
Is that diagram in the first part of the video correct in there is a direct connection from the PCM to the TPS? I am having an intermittent code 22, and wondering if it could be a grounding issue, or need to change the TPS.
I have taken my truck to 3 garages to fix my problem and after more than 500 dollars it still isn't fixed. I will try this and see if I can diagnose it. Thank you.
Well check your TPS. Also check the vacuum tubes going the throttle body. I am second owner and I was having a myriad of problems like that. They never changed them, and all were rotted
Questions friends i have trouble with mine it throws me a code that says spark timing ignition I changed distributor spark plugs and cables and nock sensor and coil and it still throws me that code and makes a little raddleling noise when you floor it any help please is appreciated thanks.
Might be a little late sorry, it sounds like your initial timing is off. There is a brown wire you must unplug prior to setting initial timing that bypasses the computer.
I'm about to jump the gray and blue and see if Inger code 21 I already have 22 I will leave know,, but pretty sure bad pcm new transmission new tps and still have to have high rpm to shift and when u de celerate it just free wheels
Jay I haven't checked a vehicle of that year but late model ones I only use my scope. I found glitches with the scope I could not catch with a meter. Do you have a scope.
Farmboy's Garage Show your wife this posting where I mention the PICO scope is the one that is PC based and it's the one I like , I have a 2 channel model and it sure would be a nice Christmas gift for Jay and he would love to make vids with it :)

@@kgbreviews35I still have the vehicle and the issue has not returned

Thanks Eddie! Hope it solves your issue!
as I think you know I have the exact same truck with exact same TBI engine. So I will pay close attention to these vids! thanks!
Well I wasn't sure what year yours was, but I'm glad they might be able to help you out. I'm planning to put a lot more of these up eventually ;)

Reading from a service manual is great but we all can do that. Chop chop

Still a lot of these vehicles running around and some good information Bud
Thanks Lloyd! There sure are and they are dirt cheap compared to the older square bodies.
you don't consider the 1987 a square body? Mine is the old style square front.

having a problem with surging up and down. also put foot on the gas its sputtering in then picks up speed

Thanks Farmboy!
Great info. Thank you for sharing.
That's what my truck told me and I replace the TPSand it works good
Yes, that is usually the fix unless it is a wiring issue.
Thanks was having the same code , I just cleaned mine with brake cleaner lol it’d work tho
very nice video and informative. thank you
Thanks!
I got a quick question what kinda repair book is that ur using
I brought a new tps and it's still showing 21 and 22 could it be a bad tps
I got 5v on gray wire and jumped blue/grey together no 21 code at all so that means pcm
Questions friends i have trouble with mine it throws me a code that says spark timing ignition I changed distributor spark plugs and cables and nock sensor and coil and it still throws me that code and makes a little raddleling noise when you floor it any help please is appreciated thanks.

I have a cheapo Harbor Freight scan tool for OBD2 vehicles. I wish I could afford a nice scope ;) I might do a review of my scan tool soon.

Haha, I'll be sure to let her know!
Good steps to follow, thanks.
Thanks Wyatt!
I hope, so here goes. Thanks.
This should apply to a 6.5 turbo diesel?
I answered my own question, thanks alot boss. Also major props for making the counterpart DTC code 21 video.
Cool, thanks!
good info
Thanks Drew!
Man no code 21 after jumping wires
Gonna be a wiring issue and those are annoying
Thanks Farmboy!
You're welcome!
