I'm an Indian originally from Uganda and even I don't think Indians should be recognised in the country. I've been to Kenya many times and the story is different there, Indians play a more active role in assimilation and participation within the Kenyan community and culture, the majority of them have been there for decades and have actual roots in the country. However despite my family like many other Indians having had roots in Uganda for decades, the vast majority of Indians in the country are super fresh, new immigrants - they do not have roots in the country and many have only known the country for less than a decade. Whilst some of us do have respect for the African country's culture, many of the new Indians don't mix with native Ugandans and live in their tight communities only doing business with each other. Sorry if you disagree with me but I think the Ugandan government should wait at least another 25-30 years before even considering making Indians a tribe. (Although knowing contemporary geopolitics, it wouldn't surprise me to see them being made a tribe to get on India's good side as far as foreign investment etc.)

True. In Africa Africaness is about procreating with one another and furthering each other's cultures, values, systems and trusting the future of each other's descendants with each other. Hence the practice of blood pact, blood brotherhood and coffee bean ceremony. It's about mixing genes and furthering the culture of each other's ancestors for generation to generation. Seeking the well being of each others descendants and carrying that cross forward. And the fact that this is another race. It's not an African people but and Asian people brings with it several issues that have to be discussed. Africa has had a very bad experience since the days of beginning of slavery. Foreigners settling in Africa has become associated with suppression, genocide, ethnic cleansing and more recently colonialism which tries to erase the African identify and replace it with it's own. This issue has always been mitigated my intermarriage but not always so. This is the real issue with this Asian integration. To be considered a tribe would infer being willing to be considered Africa. And when you look at Indian Ugandan culture, language and traditions how African are they? Indians need to take a look at the other communities who came as migrants into Uganda such as the Tutsi, the Bahima, the Luo. These communities have been in East Africa barely 300 years or so and they had to integrate through language and genes. They have a form of accountability through their blood and language connection. The Indian community need to prove their loyalty to the African spirit, their trustability with African heritage and culture that the can be trusted with carrying the African torch forward for thousands of generations. They have to prove that the interest of the Africans is their own interest also and have a seed of brotherhood. A pact if you may. The practice of swallowing the coffee bean such a process would be helpful in building relations between the local communites as one of trust. Other communities had the ones of blood pact that established a system of brotherhood. All these processes are followed by marriage which in the Indian situation is lacking. How can one community trust you with their own and descendant welfare when you have not proved to them that you accept to be one among them? That you accept to blend with their culture, society, values, language and genes. How can they trust the future of their own children with you when you haven't proven to them that their genes are worth mixing with your own? How can any community trust that their descendants will be safe with you when you can't even mix with them, you discriminate and treat them as lower than yourselves even now when you are foreign? Being a tribe in Uganda stems from a common ancestral heritage, do the Indians have that? It involves having a cultural system, a political system of accountability where there is a heirarchy and punishment when a member violates. In the previous centuries, millenia foreign communities were always welomes if they were willing to assimilate themselves under an already existing tribe or entity, were able to prove loyalty and kinship with the local tribes and enter into relations akin to brotherhood. The same applies here. The Indian community needs to realize that they can not have it both ways. There requires an element of surrender of part of their Indianess, genetics, culture and acceptance of some of the African culture, genetics and values. Otherwise African local communities will never embrace them. My advice is that the Indians identify a local tribe with which to assimilate and request for a clan status among them other than a tribe. That way the issue f accountability to our people will be solved. There will always be someone standing in for them and they will have acknowledgement of heritage even without blending their genes. However they will have to adapt some of the cultural practices of that indeginous community. That I feel is the best way forward. But to want to keep your asianess, asian culture, values, religion, practices and caste system (which is against African culture by the way and paves way for a repeat of African racism and subjugation we have seen in the past) and still expect to be recognized as an indeginous African tribe (without any Africaness) is asking a bit too much.
For the sake of my not so knowledgeable friends arguing erratically,being born in a country to foreign nationals does not guarantee you automatic citizenship even if they have loved there for 200years.You still need to apply for citizenship. In any case Indians came to Uganda as railway workers not settlers which makes their case even argueably not automatically qualifying for citizenship.

Dear Indians in Uganda, for any one who want to become a Ugandan, there is a very clear path towards attaining citizenship for those who want it. Ugandan tribes are indigenous and Indians in Uganda are not and therefore, Indians can not under any circumstances be recognized as a tribe in Uganda. Those who like the Kenyan approach can go and settle there. Whom are you lecturing about the Ugandan brain drain, how many Ugandan have "white collar" jobs in Indian owned companies in Uganda? No body told you to come and invest in Uganda as a precondition to be recognized as a tribe? And as an investor or business owner in Uganda, don't you expect to pay your fair share of your tax? I'm an Indian originally from Uganda and even I don't think Indians should be recognised in the country. I've been to Kenya many times and the story is different there, Indians play a more active role in assimilation and participation within the Kenyan community and culture, the majority of them have been there for decades and have actual roots in the country. However despite my family like many other Indians having had roots in Uganda for decades, the vast majority of Indians in the country are super fresh, new immigrants - they do not have roots in the country and many have only known the country for less than a decade. Whilst some of us do have respect for the African country's culture, many of the new Indians don't mix with native Ugandans and live in their tight communities only doing business with each other. Sorry if you disagree with me but I think the Ugandan government should wait at least another 25-30 years before even considering making Indians a tribe. (Although knowing contemporary geopolitics, it wouldn't surprise me to see them being made a tribe to get on India's good side as far as foreign investment etc.)

True. In Africa Africaness is about procreating with one another and furthering each other's cultures, values, systems and trusting the future of each other's descendants with each other. Hence the practice of blood pact, blood brotherhood and coffee bean ceremony. It's about mixing genes and furthering the culture of each other's ancestors for generation to generation. Seeking the well being of each others descendants and carrying that cross forward. And the fact that this is another race. It's not an African people but and Asian people brings with it several issues that have to be discussed. Africa has had a very bad experience since the days of beginning of slavery. Foreigners settling in Africa has become associated with suppression, genocide, ethnic cleansing and more recently colonialism which tries to erase the African identify and replace it with it's own. This issue has always been mitigated my intermarriage but not always so. This is the real issue with this Asian integration. To be considered a tribe would infer being willing to be considered Africa. And when you look at Indian Ugandan culture, language and traditions how African are they? Indians need to take a look at the other communities who came as migrants into Uganda such as the Tutsi, the Bahima, the Luo. These communities have been in East Africa barely 300 years or so and they had to integrate through language and genes. They have a form of accountability through their blood and language connection. The Indian community need to prove their loyalty to the African spirit, their trustability with African heritage and culture that the can be trusted with carrying the African torch forward for thousands of generations. They have to prove that the interest of the Africans is their own interest also and have a seed of brotherhood. A pact if you may. The practice of swallowing the coffee bean such a process would be helpful in building relations between the local communites as one of trust. Other communities had the ones of blood pact that established a system of brotherhood. All these processes are followed by marriage which in the Indian situation is lacking. How can one community trust you with their own and descendant welfare when you have not proved to them that you accept to be one among them? That you accept to blend with their culture, society, values, language and genes. How can they trust the future of their own children with you when you haven't proven to them that their genes are worth mixing with your own? How can any community trust that their descendants will be safe with you when you can't even mix with them, you discriminate and treat them as lower than yourselves even now when you are foreign? Being a tribe in Uganda stems from a common ancestral heritage, do the Indians have that? It involves having a cultural system, a political system of accountability where there is a heirarchy and punishment when a member violates. In the previous centuries, millenia foreign communities were always welomes if they were willing to assimilate themselves under an already existing tribe or entity, were able to prove loyalty and kinship with the local tribes and enter into relations akin to brotherhood. The same applies here. The Indian community needs to realize that they can not have it both ways. There requires an element of surrender of part of their Indianess, genetics, culture and acceptance of some of the African culture, genetics and values. Otherwise African local communities will never embrace them. My advice is that the Indians identify a local tribe with which to assimilate and request for a clan status among them other than a tribe. That way the issue f accountability to our people will be solved. There will always be someone standing in for them and they will have acknowledgement of heritage even without blending their genes. However they will have to adapt some of the cultural practices of that indeginous community. That I feel is the best way forward. But to want to keep your asianess, asian culture, values, religion, practices and caste system (which is against African culture by the way and paves way for a repeat of African racism and subjugation we have seen in the past) and still expect to be recognized as an indeginous African tribe (without any Africaness) is asking a bit too much.

Dear Indians in Uganda, for any one who want to become a Ugandan, there is a very clear path towards attaining citizenship for those who want it.
Ugandan tribes are indigenous and Indians in Uganda are not and therefore, Indians can not under any circumstances be recognized as a tribe in Uganda.
