**Jomsvikings is pronounced Yomsvikings- It was too late to change this by the time I realised**
Hey guys. Another one for you Vikings/Anglo-Saxons fans. I understand not everybody is into Early Medieval Britain As much as I am! but I hope you can appreciate that these ones take infinitely less time to make so are a nice break for me. Much more Crusades and Eastern Europe on the way over the next few months!

Who else came from the Vinland Saga?
Shit this history is beautiful I wonder how the author put all this together
I hope not many
but did he carry a giant log into battle
Park for answer
Anyone else from VinLand Saga? And AP history 😂.
Yo if you learned about the Jomsviking in AP history I want to know your teacher and where the fuck you are from.
Vinland fo sho
@@KingGayCockroach no bullshit bro, you already know they dpnt teach anything like this in American schools
Yes
I like vinlandsaga
Darn never thought the tale of VINLAND SAGA was in history..... I thought thorkell was a made up name
Ikr
The name, as many Norse names are still in use. Specially names that relate to the old favorite god of most: Tor, and Hebraic names are not as widespread as in the rest of Europe, and "Western Nations", probably as a result of Christianity were very late to spread here, and most of the old Germanic traditions still have a life here, as with dancing around the Maypole, is very strong in Sweden. I don't know about the rest of Scandinavia, but in Norway midsummer solstice is celebrated by giant bonfires all around the nation. And specially midwinter solstice is still very strong. All the Christmas traditions have origins here, as with dragging an evergreen tree into the home, and decorating it, is a celebration of the rebirth of life, and how the sun returns after almost dying out in the winters. Even how kids give "Santa" a glass of milk and cookies, are after putting out a bowl of porridge for the the local "nisse" as "Saint Nicholas" is named here, but have no relation to. (The dark variant of elves, the dwarfs, very similar to the Irish beliefs in fairies, that used to be feared, but then got a more innocent variation).
My boy History time back at it again with fantastic historical content! Your videos could easily be placed in a college level class and be extremely helpful!
Glad you like it man! thanks so much
CANUTE THE GREAT! THE REAL HERO OF VINLAND SAGAAAAAAA!!!!
You really ought to k-know wa-who's wa-who.
MAGNUS DID NOTHING WROOOOONG!!!!!!
Pretty sure the name´s "knut" and not "canute"...
martialme84
written both ways
+y Source please.
Good to see St Alfege gets a mention.
He was killed in Greenwich and they used to have a hospital named after him there which featured in my family tree.
Another excellent video.
I love the Saxon Viking period.
Interesting!
I am a dane and I too always know when to pull out.
You speak like a true skald. If you were born hundreds of years ago, you would travel from hill fort to hill fort and earn your living by telling stories. Entire tribes would gather around to hear your tales.
Joe Smith Well! In those days you had to be factual as well as entertaining and you had to know music so....sometimes certain facts got "fudged" which should tell a modern historian to BE CAREFUL of "bardic sources" even today nationslists of certain tribes will give a history that is completely barren of any facts whatsoever in order to fit their own nationalist agenda. 🎥
I meant that he has the tone of a skald, way of constructing his sentences. Coming from the Balkans, I am fully aware how trashy nationalist-inspired stories are. They don't even follow their own logic or sequence at most times.
@@magnuschristianssen8999 do you think internationalists ever fudge facts to fit their agendas?
Hear ye hear ye
Big feasts of meat 🍖 , bonfires, and the richest and most fresh booze you’d ever have (most the time that is) and not one skinny little teenager face down in their phone. Cheers men!!
"That's over 10 times the population of the actual historical vikings" Best advert
Excellent story Old Bean.
The time is fast approaching when the saga of the North Sea Empire can finally be told! I'm excited to hear it. It's a time of a real Game of Thrones, with so very many imposing Jarls looming behind the throne of Canute.
I hope that in the telling of this imminently approaching story, you will spoil us for content. It would fantastic if we get separate videos on the power-brokers like Jarl Godwin, Jarl Siward (of Shakespearean infamy) Eirik Jarl of Northumbria, Thorfinn Jarl of Orkney and maybe a revisiting of Jarls Uhtred and Eadric, and if we are lucky, additional videos for King Brian and King Macbeth. It all tells like some grisly and heinous opera.
I can't wait. Please make it awesome.
I am in for king brian
Of course mate :) I'm hoping to make somewhere between 10 and 20 videos on the North Sea Empire and its aftermath running up to Hastings. Such an incredibly rich period in history.
The story of the pirate kings of the Irish Sea is a great one too that needs to be told
Yep one covering the Ui Imair in detail
Better if you extend it to kingdom of isles and Mann
There is a neat fictionalized version of the Jomsvikings in Guy Gabriel Kay's novel "The Last Light of the Sun," a really good read too.
Thanks for the recommendation !
And people say real History is to boring to be made interesting on screen.
NONSENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Haha
History Time 😁
Wow posted the same day I caught up on Vinland saga awesome
Only recently found this channel. I'm glad that I stumbled upon it. These are the best documentaries I've ever watched. Thank you for sharing your in-depth knowledge and research with us :)
Love your videos! Lots of goodies.
You should consider doing a documentary or Voices of the past on Saxo Grammaticus and the history of the Danes. It's the best primary document on pre Viking age Scandinavia.
This is good...just the historical facts without any political cant or neopagan silliness. You are a treasure among RUclips videographers!
Loving these videos! It’s great to see a video that isn’t repeating itself.
Thanks!
Vinland=Slavs. Jomsvikings were a conglomeration of Scandinavians and Baltic Slavs from regions of northern Poland and eastern Germany.
Btw, good video!!! You post content of excellent quality.
E N I think Poland was called Vindland by the Vikings not Vinland
Love your stuff
I came here for Thorkell the Tall anime lol.
Everyone did
Thank you for telling our history so well 😃 I even use some of it in my teaching
Wasn't "J" in Jomsvikings pronounced as "Y", though?
Correct! Silly mistake by me then it was too late to change unfortunately.
The right way to write it, is jomsviking. And they stayed in Jomsborg, now laying in the northern region of Germany.
Could you cover the Holy Roman Emperor's campaigns against the German pagan Saxons? There was something like three wars that made the whole Stormcloaks versus the Empire look like a picnic by comparison. In fact I think the Stormcloak story was inspired by the Saxon rebel leaders who openly defied the Holy Roman Emperors.
Yep! Coming relatively soon. Hopefully this year
Man your videos are sick but as I've said before please do a video on Norman sically. Or sically in general it had a pretty interesting history
Soon :) half hour doc on a certain chap named Roger...
More excellent content...love it 👌
Thanks very much. So much more on the way!
X-Com soundtrack in the background somehow fits really nicely :D
I don't know if the video was intended for just Torkel the Tall, or the Jomsvikings as whole. If it was for the Jomsvikings you seem to have missed the battle at Fyrisvollene between 980-986. The battle was led by Styrbjørn (current ruler of the Jomsvikings) to claim the Swedish kingdom from his uncle, Eirik the Victorius (who gained the nickname by winning this battle).
Robert Pederesn Hey friend! So this video is just outlining the last years of the Jomsvikings. I will be releasing a prequel of sorts eventually 'The Rise of the Jomsvikings' which will concern the events you mentioned, also Palnatoke
Robert Pederesn I like Erik the Victorious as well.
History Time I must wait 😂
What do you mean by saying Sweden? Was no Sweden at that Point. You had Svea, Gota, Gotland, Scania
At this point yes, king Eirik is considered to be the first king "mention" who where king of these territories with the exception of Skåne. Skåne was a part of Denmark untill 1658 but "Sweden" existed long before it was a part of it. After Eirik the Victorious Sweden remained mostly undvided (with exception of the civil wars like between the Sverke Ætten and Erik Ætten). Gautland was a kingdom on it's own but mostly it was ruled by a monarch who also happend to rule Sveariki/Svitjod or Sverige. To say Sweden in this matter is not a mistake, unlike the period before Eirik the Victorius.
From our common past; another great story!
So many more to tell!
The history content is remarkable thank you for making these great videos
David k Thanks for watching! So much more on the way
As always a great an informative video
Max Walker Glad you liked it. Thanks!
Cnut the great yes was waiting for this since reading Vinland saga
Great Video... the Saga of Thorkell the Tall... Would make a great movie or Mini Series. What about some more Villians from Early Medieval times?
Were there even any "heroes" in that dark time?
Can someone explain the difference or similarities and relationships of these words:
-Scandinavian
-Danes
-Norse
-Nordic
-Norman
Are Danes not Scandinavian? Did Danes have vikings, or were they just land warriors?
Highly informative!
How do you connect to a viking phone?
Harold bluetooth
Bump since you made my day
I saw something the other day saying Bluetooth was actually named after him and that the Bluetooth symbol is a rune.
@@nw932 close enough
Wish I had such a great narrating voice, or I'd made similar Anglo-Saxon, Norman, Germanic videos. And actually it's not pronounced "Yomsvikings", it's certainly with a J, but with short O, more like Jômsviking, like the O in Jorvik, with the O as in "OOOM" (the meditation sound/word). And not VAYKING, but WÎKÎNG. People make fun of Scandinavs speaking English, but Norwegian with an English accent is actually hilarious. :).
English people speaking Swedish always sounds like either danish or Skånska
@@arawn1061 Skaaunska! :) But they (The English) have no clue how to pronounce an R. They say "Ail" or similar, twisting the tongue in a strange way instead of spitting out the letteR. Skåne-people have a very clear, almost harsh R, as we use on the West-Coast here in Bergen, Norway, a bit similar to how they pronounce R in Israel, I would claim. While normal, civilized, soft Swedish, as in Stockholm, have a barely sounding R, as also eastern Norwegians, and I'm guessing it would be easier for an Englishman to deal with?
It's fascinating by the way how stubbornly Scandinavs hold on to their local variants of the modern Norse. Just a short drive from county to county gives a greater variation, then from Oxford English to Deep South American English or Aussie English.
Although actual Norwegian died out with the Black Death, 200 years after the plague they no longer had a clue in how to read the books in how they used to write old Norwegian, but it was much closer to old Norse. Modern Norwegian is based on Danish, hence it's so easy for us to understand Danish. But not the other way around it seems. I asked some Danes if they understood Norwegian once. They nodded, and I started to talk, but then they begged me to change to English after a while. :)
Only Icelandic people and those in the Western Isles, know how to speak how we all used to do here.
Sorry for the long answer, as I'm very fascinated by Germanic linguistics and etymology etc.
Loved it. Congrats for getting a sponsor :)
Amazing video and awesome end music 🎵
On the map of the Baltic Gotland (the large island in the middle of the Baltic Sea) it is colored blue like wendland when in fact it was a independent island inhabited by scandinavian peoples.
Yea Bornholm, and it where a independent island before danish king Harald Bluetooth took control of it somewhere between year 940-986.
Great Warrior, Honorable man and the Troll of Jom.. may Valhalla except you! Odins valkyries carry you home!
I think he was Christian lol
Another great video thanks! ...I just downloaded Vikings the mmorpg from your link 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks! Glad you like it
wow good work
I wonder how much effort is put in these kinds of videos
A disgusting amount. I am a one man team.
Arent the angles from southern denmark?
The C&C audio is great haha
they probably didn’t exist. They don’t appear in Contemporary accounts, and Thorkell is mentioned as just being one of sveinn’s military commanders. His ravaging of England seems to align with the usual raids of the past, just highly successful.
OUT OF THE COUNTLESS HOURS WATCHING, REWATCHING, & LISTENING TO YOUR WONDERFUL VIDEOS...MINUTE 12:20 I HEAR "IRREGARDLESS"...IRREGARDLESS IS NOT A WORD...😉
Did you just listen to find out something you can call someone out on? Do you do this in normal conversation as well? Bet its really popular.
Grat video as always!
Thanks man!
Can you do a video about Great Moravian empire and its rulers? perhaps Svatopluk I. and his conquests.
Another great video. Do you mean "regardless" rather than "irregardless"?
"Irregardless is a word sometimes used in place of regardless or irrespective which has caused controversy since the early twentieth century, though the word appeared in print as early as 1795. Most dictionaries list it as nonstandard or incorrect usage, and recommend that "regardless" be used instead."
I prefer irregardless to regardless.
Irregardless sounds like a double negative and should therefore be avoided at all cost.
Way to make oneself sound like some poorly educated yokel.
History Time. The word regardless means without regard. By adding the prefix ir- to regardless, it changes the meaning to not without regard. Not without regard means to regard. Irregardless of which you prefer, the meaning is quite clear. I may be being irrationaless or irresponsibless but it irritatelesses me.
Yours pedantically,
IrNelsonless
Thanks for clearing that up, nelson.
martialme84 My absolute pleasure, irmartialme84less...
thank you that was cool reminded me of reading henry treece books
Can u pls cover the early history of the holy roman empire? I always thouht about this empire, like The world is changing and empires rise and fall but this thing stays and just watch
Yep. I'm researching this at the moment. Videos won't be for a while, but eventually it'll be a whole series.
Where's the illustration at 1:04 from? Is it one of Lorenz Frohlich's?
Installed the game, it better be good! Edit: I have never given money to a youtube channel before, patreon only had monthly choices, is there a way I can send a one time payment? You deserve it, excellent content.
Thanks man! Much appreciated!! Best way is through PayPal. It's in the 'channel links' section or petekelly90@gmail.com
Magnus was right btw it's not good to have a rogue army on your soil aka Pretorian Gaurd and other examples like the Knights Templar and even the Samurai of Japan. BUT had he kept the Order alive and had it serve him only a certain battle in 1066 might have gone badly for the Saxons and imagine William meeting his distant cousins on the field. No amount of Norman calvary charges would have broken a Jomsborg sheildwall! I find just 1 little detail missing here: The kings of England were Edward the Confessor who ultimately lost to his second, the usurper Harold Godwin who himself lost his crown to William after Hastings in 1066.
He was right for his own power, still a little sad though.
all i know of the subject comes from a manga called Vinland Saga lol
A like nice fine wine.
@John Nathan Iraham Yeah, I saw it. It was nice
vikings war of clans is the new audible
you make smile thank you
Glorious day?! Must have been glorious only for those that weren't there...
Inglorious
My bad
all good man
I caught an"iregardless" :))
Awesome video and Channel in General, But as a ancient hellenic history buff myself I would love to see videos about the Greco-Roman wars Diadochoi, Alexander the Great etc
More on that coming eventually. I make all the maps from scratch so it takes a long time for those ones. It's an area of great interest for me so I will be revisiting in great detail eventually.
History Time I know it's hard to find accurate maps and quality images as well about this era without having copyright issues. I have the same problems with my blog and pdfs I upload in Academia. And I would like to ask you how you find free for use images and from what sources?
No, those are talked about all the fucking time. I'd prefer he keeps doing what he does
Jokester The Mighty You are right about the quantity of ancient Hellenic and Ronan videos .But few channels present in detail this era, Epic History Tv, K&G,Invicta, and this one so i still believe that this subject is not yet covered in its whole magnitude.
Those are still 3 channels vs pretty much none of this Viking era stuff
It's the way of the Jomsvikings! These men aim to shatter!
Indeed
I vote for some work on the french Indian wars. be nice mix.
I will be getting to Native Americans eventually. Is fascinating stuff.
History Time nice. when u get there should cover Peter pond. I am his direct decendent from his "frontier" wife.
Seven Years War would be interesting. Maybe a general history of it or videos on the theaters of the war
flyingkoopa45 it'd be epic. history time on 7 years. love it. I'm french Indian myself, a direct decendent of that war. my family was in it n been in Michigan since. Peter pond my old ass grandfather 9 generation s or something in that area.
Who here from Vinland saga
An interesting tale!
Who is here after seeing Vinland saga... raise hand
I see Jomsvikings as something like Super Vikings
They took a good beating at Hjørungavåg!
They did indeed
Thanks for the video!
Torcells name is Torkjell Høie. Thats the right name.
In the battle of the danish trone, Magnus Olavson, son of Olav Haraldson, the king of Norway, overrun jomsborg in 1043, and put and final end to the jomsvikingene.
In the battle of hjørungavåg, thats the right name of the place, were the Norwegian ladejarl beats jomsvikingene on the western shore of norway. Jomsvikingene was mercaneries and most of the payed soldier troughout all history, never put theyre heart in loyalty to anyone but their selfs. So, its most likely to believe that theyre reputation is somehow overrated.
The norwegians both beat them and put a stop to the order.
And scania isnt the right name. Skåne (skaane) pronounced scoune is more correct.
Lol
Reminds of Vinland Saga. The character Thors the Troll.
Well he was successful man that’s why more then thousand year later we know about him
Vinland Saga Brought me here
Great work. Rarely anyone mentions polish troops.
Anglos why you no towers?
Anyone here after Vinland Saga?
Vinland saga show thorkell is against vinkings asshole saga
The name 'Sweden' is technically incorrect. It was called 'Svidjodt' - the land of the Svears. Sweden is the land of the Svears and the Geats, founded in the 12th c.
Here I thought u were saying Spain the entire time
I tried playing Viking war of clans couldn’t get into it, I want a phone dedicated total war game for the Viking age not just the kingdoms game we’re you have to be English with Vikings as a secondary back up, I want one dedicated to straight Viking lore
Song at 14:50 ?
That's Ossuary 1-A Beginning by Kevin MacLeod
+History Time cheers
Cnut did not kill Thorkell, tall man was bored and set out to find an army that could defeat him bc he was a Norse pagan that believed in Valhalla
The Vikings were first and foremost pragmatic.
harold bluetooth? what a great coinsidence
You should do a video about some of the characters in the show Vikings, and judge the historical accuracy of the characters in the show.
Just a suggestion
He already done The Real Ragnar and The Real Rollo.
fuck me isn't there something else to do but fight. ho hum. fight fight fight. i'm getting board of fighting with a sword. killing the horde for my lord. my word how absurd. thank you gare
WOW! 👍👍

Why did the polish army joined Canute for invasion of england??
I mean, he was related to polish King, but was that enough?
Ah the good old jomsvikings
Wouldn't want to mess with them..

No such word as irregardless, or rather it is a nonsensical word.
Nonsensical words are the best words :)

So caunte will be King of Denmark in Vinland saga 🤔🤔
Did you just refer to the 2000s as the noughties? Never heard that before.. Made me smile.
I did indeed

But was war inevitable ?

The Bayeaux Tapestry has nothing to do with the story being told here. Very deceptive.
