Compartmentalization Required to control loss of atmosphere, ingress of water or hazardous gas/vapor etc. would also Limit Speed of travel, while Defenders who Know their Ship, are doing their Best to make their arrival "Unpleasant". In the days of "Fighting Sail", Ships with Open Decks, Boarded Enemies, also with Open Decks. Both normally had Large Crews for Two Purposes. One to Board or Repel, the other to provide "Prize Crew" to Repair and Sail any taken in Battle. Attempting to Board an Aware Target from Smaller vessels, becomes problematic. They Are Easier to Defeat while on their way, and there is a Choke Point upon arrival. Some Things Never Change.
