I would have gone a much different route. It's evident that the aliens had superior technology, and the humans wouldn't have done better, because if they could, they already would have. My take would have been: Challenge 1: Feat of strength. The human wins through brute force. Challenge 2: Feat of Intelligence: The human loses, the game being to complex for their brain to comprehend. Challenge 3: Feat of Engineering, the tie breaker: The alien leaders gather and judge the alien system to be far superior than the rudimentary explosive the humans built. However, the humans are willing to detonate then an there, sacrificing themselves for everyone else. Human's win by the only thing the Binars lacked: a concept of self-sacrifice. But that's just me. Build them up, drop them down to add tension. Then resolve through something unconventional.
