- In this series I will take you through a step by step build of the Airfix 1/72 De Havilland Mosquito PRXVI kit.
Aimed at beginners, I hope to show lots of simple tips and tricks to boost the confidence of less experienced modellers, and to maybe add some polish for the more accomplished. Lots of detail, and yes, lots of talking! In this final episode I add a panel line wash, flat coat and the final few parts to finish the model.

Just watched the series and got the kit to foiiow along with you. I loved it. Got the Mustang just the Defient to get now. Thanks Jen.
Lovely build Jen,. Thank you for sharing the journey over past months - very enjoyable and informative
Nice tip using WD40 to remove the bare metal foil glue. I've got a Stuka canopy to clean up which I'll try that on. Lovely job on the build.
Thank you for the great build series. I would love to see you build the new Airfix B-24. But to be honest I really enjoy all of your builds. I got back into the hobby in 2011 and Drewe Manton’s videos really help me understand how important the basics of modeling are to a “professionally” finished model. When Drewe stopped making videos it was almost as if you took over the torch so to speak. Your attention to detail and making sure the basics are done correctly makes for a great watch. Thanks again for the videos and please keep them coming!
Absolutely gorgeous work Jen.
That's looking great. Thanks for the series.
Really enjoyed this series and am looking forward to the Mustang and Defiant 😊. Keep up the good work 👍
A next stage model would be great - perhaps with a bit more weathering and a little photo-etch. Thanks Jen.
she looks beautiful Jen , excellent job !
Lovely job, thank you Jen, I've really enjoyed watching. I would love to see another build especially with some weathering, I'm never really very happy with my efforts.
Thanks Jen, didn't think the world needed another "modelling for beginners" until you did this. :) Anything 1/72, maybe with a bit of weathering.
That is a great build, awesome plain and you are an awesome modeler, we can learn a lot from you, thanks some much.
Thank you. Really good series Jen. I like the idea of another one in1/72 with a slight elevation to take into account a bit more weathering.
Very clean build, looks really good!
A really helpful well explained build full of tips for all modellers so many thanks and hopefully this will be the start of a series of such builds to help us develop and hone our skills.
Elevate away, from my standpoint! 🙂
I suppose the Swordfish is already a lost cause but I could suggest a navy aircraft or even a flying boat, both of wich would be a good excuse for some weathering...
But anything you'd like would be fine as well!
Really enjoyed this series, always looked forward to each episode and learnt some new techniques. Great job!
Glad to hear it, and thanks for watching!
I really enjoyed this series Jen, thank you for putting it together.
I would love to see any 1/48 scale fighter given this treatment as that is my favourite scale for aircraft.
Lovely job Jen, enjoyed the series very much & even as an old hack at this modelling lark learnt a few things, thanks. Maybe an airliner next or car kit, whatever it is I'll be watching 🥸
Excellent series and the final model is very striking. If you were to do something similar I'd appreciate a 1/72 kit just with a more challenging scheme. If you want to do biplane rigging too then maybe a Gladiator with all that "shadow compensation" stuff would be good.
If you're doing beginners stuff (and this one was excellent), I would really not like to see any after market additions. Really I'd say look for subjects that have at least one quirk. Like a biplane with some simple rigging, a glossy civilian paint-job, maybe an airliner? Others have mentioned metallic finishes - maybe show how to get the stained blue & yellow titanium effect you see on things like an SU-27. How about some basic pilot figure painting - or any figures? All good & look forward t seeing what you get up to. PS Only a Rigger would like the smell of WD-40!
Hi Jen. What a day! 1-10 in one sitting. Really enjoyed it, thank you.
I model 1/48 aircraft mainly so that would be nice, out of the box, no aftermarket, US Navy jets always look great I think, grey and white with large colourful decals.
As a curveball how about a car? I’m currently trying to work my way through the back catalogue of 1/12 Tamiya F1 kits. They’re all very long in the tooth now and difficult to find at an affordable price. Perfect gloss finishes on cars and civil aircraft can be tricky to achieve…….
Best, TonyS
Good work! I feel like you should get a medal or something for that lol
Hi Jen, thoroughly enjoyable as always!
My rule of thumb for letting paint dry is that if I can smell paint, it's still gassing out and needs more drying time.
I have a couple of suggestions; the Italeri 1/72 Bell 47 with some detail added and the fuel tanks corrected. Or, and perhaps this is a little mean spirited (mostly kidding), I would love to see you wrestle a 1/72nd scale Roden Bristol F2B into submission.
I can't help thinking you want to see me suffer!!
I do think you should build some more aircraft kits possibly 1/48 scale a maybe a natural metal finish?
It good to see a kit built using first principles to get a good well built kit.
Delve deeper. Jen has done a few on Metallic finishes.
@@memkiii Ah ok I will have a look/search. 👍🏻
😍🤩👌👍👍🙏🌹
Thanks Jen, I thoroughly enjoyed this series. I especially found the use, application and (finally in this episode) removal and cleanup of the bare metal foil as masking material useful. Fiddly yes, but great results. Also appreciate the rationale and demonstration of using superglue for the fuselage seams, and the use of VMS flat coat, which I have but have not cracked the bottle yet. Didn't realize it was so thick, can it be thinned?
If you want to do a biplane and stick with Airfix, the new 1/48 Bristol Bulldog looks fun.
It can be thinned, but it seems to affect the properties a bit. That said, I have not tried thinning it with the proprietary thinners yet, it's on the list!
Another excellent video Jen 👏🏻 Lovely build. I like using VMS varnishes as you’ve said the finish is brilliant, but I struggle afterwards cleaning my airbrush as it seems to still clog it up even after a deep clean 🤔
I was supposed to talk about cleaning the airbrush and I completely forgot, I'm sorry. I use a two step process - start with a cleaner that will work with water based things, for this I use IPA. By all means use the matching thinner if you have it. Once that's been swished around and cleaned through the brush will look clean to all intents and purposes, but the VMS tends to leave residue. So, step two is to use gunwash (cellulose or lacquer) thinners, it wouldn't work with the wet paint, but now all that's left is residue and the gunwash will take that away just fine. once that's flushed and blown through I put a bit of IPA in the brush for storage. I'll show this next time I use it.
Do a ww1 biplane. I have trouble with those.
