I wish I had known how lucky I was when I got to ride this. It always seemed like the dark horse at Astroworld. I loved, Texas Cyclone, Batman and Greased Lightning, those were thrilling rides. Taz's Texas Tornado, Viper and Serial Thrilla, had the strongest forces in the park and I miss them all. Mayan Mindbender, Serpent, XLR8R, Excaliber and Revolution we're all kiddie coasters as far as I was concerned.

We need a video on "Viper" that was at Six Flags Great Adventure. The whole story with the USA facility, it being a prototype, adding the rings, the fact people said it was so painful (meanwhile it wasn't even close to pre-premiere big apple coaster, or the togo stand ups still up, and of course the disaster of windjammer surf racers). That everyone thought it was better to watch and picture-esque, etc. It has a backstory most don't know. Unless i'm nuts and this already happened. I wish it could've been fixed/altered I thought it was enjoyable besides the shoulder harnesses and it should've had a double in-line twist inversion(s) too. The drop not even being tall literally WAS SOMETHING to write home about on top of it.

I liked Viper. It had the best drop in the park and the inversions were fun. It was not a fun ride to test ride in the morning since it would leave me seeing stars.
The coaster ran better with a full train. Even though Rolling Thunder was my main coaster, I was able to experience Viper with 3 train operations, “wheels being thrown” and Viper being struck by lightning. It was a fun coaster to ride and work. I preferred it over Medusa in both aspects.

I went to Astroworld during "Physics Day" where Physics school kids were the only ones allowed in the park. It rained, all rides closed, and all schools left, except for mine. The rides all opened back up, and me and my 10 or so other classmates had the whole park to ourselves. We rode Ultra-Twister 15 times in a row, the ride operator just said "Tell me when you wanna stop, I am just going to keep it moving until then." Amazing experience. Got to meet someone on the Ride Safety Commission who was able to confirm some of the details of Ultratwisters construction.
After meeting with executives from Togo, the Six Flags executives wanted the ride to be assembled in Japan first so they could see it operating and request changes before it’s relocation to GADV. They also wanted the ride to be easily removable for its ride rotation program.
So yes, the prototype in the video is in Japan, and it is also the same ultratwister that was sent to Six Flags Great Adventure.

It was, by far, my favorite attraction, and I wouldn’t even be able to venture a guess as to how many times I rode it. I remember its constant closures, though. There was another high ride nearby, and we would get on it, just to see if UT was back up and running! I will say, though, I remember it being *quite* a rough/uncomfortable ride. It was also found that the hydra fluid to work the "turn tables" was "too thick" for Houston. 3 computer processors ensured safety. The sad note WAS, Yes! the park came down around 7-9 months. Same here. I was 10 and I wasn’t ready to be inverted, let alone go up a 90 degree lift or go down that drop or go backwards. Lightning Loops was also a no-go. Shockwave was my 1st looper!

Ultra Twister rides foreman here from Astroworld ‘91. Funny that everyone in Houston remembers the ride’s strict manly intercom voice saying “Moving conveyor, please watch your step.” Working there, it was fun to observe the stuff we used to find in the small white rocks below the track at the end of the night (mainly hundreds of cheap neon pink and green imitation Ray-ban sunglasses). Great fun to work there. I miss it dearly.

I miss that ride. Glad I was lucky enough to catch the Astroworld version. Would have been great to ride the original vertical version, but oh well. Can’t catch them all! Wish someone would build something similar. There are smaller parks with not much space that could use something like this.

Oh wow! I love your stuff and this one hit home. Astroworld was my home park growing up. Ultra Twister was so so scary... Something about that "MOVING CONVEYOR BELT PLEASE WATCH YOUR STEP" announcement as the loading platform kept moving. It really added the anticipation. I was always worried they would be rushed and forget something... even though they never really would. This coaster has some of the strongest memories for me ever! Thank you for this. It like a love letter to me.

I worked at AstroWorld the Summer of '90. Employees walked directly under the Twister to enter the park from the parking lot, usually when a ride car was spinning overhead. It was...intense. I also vaguely remember someone getting hurt on the ride and rerouting guests from that section of the park after the incident. Great video!

Great video. I rode it at Astroworld in the early 90’s. It was incredibly smooth, and although I was young I remember the first drop having extreme ejector air as it flung you over that first drop. A great ride overall and I remember as a kid thinking that this was the most futuristic roller coaster I had ever seen.

Ooh, I always wanted to go on the Ultra Twister, but I was too young. By the time I was old enough, it had been replaced by the Viper. I still remember the guy who was super excited to run the Viper when I was working at Great Adventure - wonder if actually doing it changed his mind.

I rode this at Astroworld on a high school band trip in the early 90s. I remember it very fondly! I rode in the front row, & looking down at the nearly vertical drop was terrifying. And the heartline rolls were so much fun! It was a super unique roller coaster for it's time.

I've got to say, the TV commercials for this ride got me excited, however, every time we visited Great Adventure (usually once a year) Ultra Twister was down, and then one year it was gone. Wish I could have experienced it. ☹

This ride looked way better in the commercials then it was in real life. I remember being so excited to ride this, waited in line for 2 hours, and being so disappointed at the end. You got a couple twists and that’s it.

I have to go against you on the not rough part. I rode it many times at Astroworld, and the brake runs were insanely abrupt, especially the forward facing one on the top track.
With that being said...I still loved it! Cresting the peak of the lift hill was always a breathtaking moment!

I rode this at Astroworld, about 2 years before the park closed. All I remember is that the over the shoulder harness was the most uncomfortable rig I have ever been put in on a coaster. It was like a vice cramming me into my seat. I just wanted out of that thing, couldn't even enjoy the ride. I six foot, so it's not like I'm a giant or anything.
