The Bankruptcy of a Giovanola: The Final Coasters - Anaconda, Goliath & Titan | Expedition Extinct

- Join us on our final part in a series looking at Giovanola and B&M. This Expedition looks at the final and only three rides made exclusively in house for Giovanola. A company that through many failings would end up with them filing for bankruptcy. In both the United States and South Africa the company made Anaconda, Goliath and Titan, their legacy left behind though would change the roller coaster industry forever.

Happy New Year! What Expeditions do you hope to see this year?

I'll be honest- having your wedding ceremony on a rollercoaster definitely makes memorable.
not one to forget !
Don't have your wedding ceremony on an Intamin, you'd experience a lot of downtime!
Memorailble?
There's this japanese couple that had theirs on Takabisha.
I'd make a pun about the plunge but that'd be taking the lowest hanging fruit.
9:10 - "Newspapers reported that the wedding reception included.... Cake" I snorted 😂😂
Literally reported that in multiple papers haha
@@ExpeditionThemePark Hahahaha 😂😂😂
Having ridden Titan this past November, I had forgotten just how good those Giovanola hypers are. Since Goliath opened in 2000, the amount of enthusiasts who dislike these hypers is staggering. The main complaint I hear is there isn't any airtime. While there is (in my opinion) a fantastic moment of sustained airtime on the ride, I have never looked at those two "Gio-pers" as airtime machines. Had I expected 45-seconds of complete and utter terajector airtime, I may have been disappointed. However, I definitely prefer the sense of speed more than I like airtime, so perhaps that is why I love these rides so much. Another great video, Sam!
The floater airtime hill is probably one of my favorite airtime hills on any roller coaster. I like floater more than ejector air. The positive Gs on titan are also unmatched for me. That final helix at the bottom of the ride is one of the most intense things I have ever experienced on a roller coaster.
I wish SFMM had Titan cause of the extra helix. Goliath's midcourse kills the momentum so bad. I love greying out and I don't even come close to it anymore compared to those early 2000s rides I had on it
@@chris_allupinya5613 does Goliath not have the helix at the bottom of the layout? I’m not talking about the one halfway. There’s one on titan that’s right near the end.
@@Bdawg71692 yeah we have the one at the end but titan has the helix that's going upwards as well
goliath sucks real bad that MCBR kills it and there is literally no G forces
I as a Brit appreciate the b&m bargains joke
Mission complete!
Lol 😂 that joke was so funny
Can confirm, literally sitting in a car park eating maccies in front of a B&M now 😂

The anaconda is still incredibly smooth today even 20 years later.
such a good ride
@@ExpeditionThemePark have you been to gold reef city?
the lighter two across train compared to the four across B&M train probably played a role there
@@iceblade019 tell that to the Vekoma SLC's

I first rode Goliath back when it was brand new, before it started braking to a crawl on the MCBR, and to this day, I have yet to find a more intense hyper coaster. The positive-G’s were INSANE, and I loved it! To this day it remains one of my favorite hypers.
It may not be an airtime machine, but I still think Goliath is a terrific hypercoaster.
I think there is room for different kind of rides and agree doesn't have to be air time filled!
Try Titan with the second helix.
@@texastitan1989 I'd been meaning to get to Over Texas. Maybe I'll go when the pandemic ends.
Goliath is the 3rd most intense hyper for me. 2nd is Titan and first is Skyrush
God the late 90s/early 20s were a different time... The whole all David's get to ride for free thing is such a stupid but amazing gimmick...
right haha
Great for people named David tho
5:14 yoooo that old school Discovery Channel bug! Pure nostalgia seeing a clip of that show! Can't remember the name of it, but I must've watched every single thing they aired about parks and rides back in that day
such a good show!
The documentary shown was called “Scream Parks”, which showed the ins and outs of operating an amusement park. Magic Mountain was the park of choice, and filming coincided with the construction and opening of Goliath in 1999-2000.
I have it taped from 2001 myself, probably somewhere up in my attic.

This has been my weird Quarantine hobby. Watching these videos. Thank you.
Thank you! Stay safe!
OMG me too! I can't even go on roller coasters anymore due to my health, but watching these vids as my high risk status keeps me under house arrest, I get some weird comfort out of it.
The only thing more shallow than their drops was their bank account
funny cus it is true
Yeah the drops seem really shallow, actually going out to ride it this weekend (I’m terrified of it but I wanna try) I wonder if there will even be any airtime on the drop
@@Mark-ie1go Oh yeah, there is. Not a lot, but there's air time. They're intense drops. The pulls outs are tight and in a tunnel.
Would love to see more about Cedar Point or Efteling. Love the channel Sam!!!!
Thank you! More to come :)
Or Premier Parks, the company that would buy Six Flags in 1998.
Goliath and Titan are currently on my bucket list of coasters to ride. I love G forces
Magic Mountain was my home park growing up, seeing all the Goliath footage brought back so many memories ❤ Thank you for a great video as always!
I worked at Six Flags Over Texas for one season in 1987. While I am a huge fan of the Titan, the unfortunate part is that Six Flags demolished the employee swimming pool to make room for it. Back in the day Six Flags treated employees really well. We had an Olympic sized swimming pool and cantina (cheap prices and way better food than was served to guests) that we could use any time we were not on shift. There was a wardrobe department where we picked up fresh uniforms everyday, and the company threw several parties for us throughout the season. I don't think any of that happens anymore. Last time I talked to an employee there, I was told the only perk was one party at the end of the season. Really sad. Used to be a great place to work. But not gonna lie.....the Titan is great. Just hate that it had to happen like that.
ahhh that is a shame
Another tragedy is the removal of Big Bend in favor of Bugs Bunny World. And I still miss the Spelunkers.
@@gregorymoore2877 I remember how excited I was to finally be tall enough to ride Big Bend for the first time, and Spelunker's was always a welcome break from the heat.
0:31 - The voiceover sounds like it's being given by Principal Skinner!
It does haha
I love Goliath. When I was a teenager I marathoned it and had one of the happiest coaster experiences of my life. Now seeing how much people hate on it makes me need to go back over ten years later to see if I was the delusional one.
I don't understand the hate at all.
Its not a bad coaster. Its just a disappointing one. Such a massive coaster with no forces, airtime or even a great drop. Its a family coaster that looks way more intense than it is
It’s hated because it’s not an airtime heavy hyper like most enthusiasts prefer. Tbh, I get why some enthusiasts dislike it, but a lack of airtime doesn’t make a bad coaster. (Though I do find some of the hate unjustified. Airtime Thrills REALLY hates Goliath, and tbh, I find his hate for it to be a bit extreme, even though I’m a fan of his.)
I dont really hate the ride, its just that its quite boring and its existence means sfmm will likely not get a good hyper until after its gone. People hate it because of what it could be.
Yes some people like Airtime Thrills really hate on it hard. It’s just lacking in airtime and the mid course hits hard. Also the drops are pretty shallow, but god damn it’s fast and the last helix is decently forceful. Titan is better because of the first helix, but it’s not a terrible ride.
Anaconda is still one of my favorite inverted coasters in the world. It is small(ish) in comparison to other inverted coasters, but damn, does it pack one hell of a punch: its sustained G's and whippy elements are just breathtaking. And bonus, that last helix is the weirdest shaped helix in existence. Someone once commented that it looks like a "ice-cream helix left out in the sun too long". Apt.
Great video as always.
a great ride!
When that Six Flags Over Texas theme began to play, my Lord was I immediately hurled back into my childhood in Houston. I must've heard and seen that commercial a million times. I didn't know it was embedded within my DNA like that! I forgot where I was for a second and thought I was still a kid running around with a Kool-cup, cutting coupons for Astroworld off the cereal box. Lol We'd also use Coke cans with Astroworld coupons on them to go. It was buy one get in free if you had that Coke can. Man! The memories, bro! Life was so good for me and my friends! Thank you!!! ❤️❤️❤️
That intro never fails to get me hyped. Thanks for another great video! Keep up the good work 😃
Thank you Emma!
As a Brit I appreciate the B&M joke lol, great vid
I knew it was niche but I went for it ha
I see similarities between this company and Arrow dynamics. Great coaster company's that have paved a way for the newer coasters today.
They have nothing in common lol
I grew up with Goliath being a part of my childhood the few times my family would visit Magic Mountain, and it’s always been such a great ride. I always felt like it might tip over or fall off the tracks, but the coaster was smooth, fast, and always worth riding if we were there.
Goliath at fiesta Texas is my go to first and last ride since it’s right by the front! I love it
Maybe it's because Goliath was one of the first big boy coasters I went on and I've loved it ever since, but I feel like I hear Giovanola's name far more than I would have expected for a bankrupt company with 3 coasters to their name
they did surprisingly a lot!
Thanks for this really high quality theme park and coaster content! I love it to bits
Thank you so much!
A launched inverted coaster?? They would've for sure been at the front of the industry, a true shame. And their rides are still incredibly smooth for 20 years old
Anaconda is amazing and I can’t describe how good it is, it’s a lot faster than videos and it’s my favourite invert. Although tower of terror at Gold reef city is the best ride at the park and some people say it’s probably made by giovanola
Nice joke mate, I don’t think I’d have the guts to ride a coaster made from materials bought from B&M bargains! I do enjoy the videos, looking forward to watching more from you!
Thank you!
Great video as usual. I knew very little about Giovanola. I'd love a video covering Morgan, I know their founder was the son of a co-founder of Arrow. Seems like an interesting company with some great coasters in their time.
Thank you!
Another absolutely amazing video. I love how each video you do often leads into the next. If I was rich you'd have a hit tv or streaming show by now
thank you so much!
The Titan is part of my hometown skyline. Whenever we pass by Six Flags during their open season we always look to see if the Titan is running that day and watch the trains take the plunge.😊
Truthfully they should've seen if they could work with B&M, as clearly they knew what was going on money-wise with the coasters they were making, including there break into the floorless coaster zone, and the hyper coaster zone. This might've been a possible merger or working together thing like when there was "arrow-huss." It seemed like they had no idea how money worked on coasters-well clearly, despite having built way more than 3, subtracting for several stand-ups and a unique coaster like Z-force (just with the worst trains ever) and traveling invert Eurostar (would 100% ride it right now). Also we know where others got the tilt-coaster from.
I love Goliath ❤ I still remember the ads for it and the epic music that accompanied it
Yessss, i love these videos, Amazing job as always mate :)
Thank you so much!
Very nicely put together video and very entertaining as well. Thanks for posting this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Another excellent very detailed video on coasters. I need to get to cedar point! Thanks Sam well done.
Could you do a video on lightnin' loops? I can't find many videos on it and I love your channel!
I talked about it a little in one video but maybe in the future!
I second the motion. All in favor, say aye!
Another quality video, I've watched hours of your videos over the past year or so
Thank you so much
Was looking for something about South Africas Anaconda!
Still a great coaster all these years later, and the last proper coaster left after Cobra in Cape Town closed.
Thank you for the history after tower of terror video of this roller coaster!
As always amazing job mate. Happy New Year. Looking forward to more of your videos.
thank you happy new year!
awesome insight into B&M's step up into the industry. your videos are awesome mate, don't stop! x
thank you so much
You always do such a wonderful job going into detail!
Thank you so much!
I’ve ridden a LOT of roller coasters and Goliath has remained solidly in my favourites for almost 20 years now. It’s pretty much the pinnacle of the ‘golden age’ of steel mega coasters; great first drop, great airtime hills, good helix finale. Fast, tall and big 👍
Agreed!
This story sounds eerily similar to Arrow dynamics and their downfall in 2001 with X at Six Flags Magic Mountain!
That b&m joke was great! Whenever I think of b&m the shop, I always think of the ride and vice versa. Also weird that you posted this video today because yesterday I was just doing some research about Giovanola... anyway great video!
must be fate!
Damn now I really wish Giovanola had been able to create more coasters! I know people talk crap on Goliath and Titan for a shallow first drop, but they offer pretty intense rides with at least one great moment of floater air. Titan is actually my second favorite ride at Six Flags Over Texas.
right!
What do people mean by shallow first drop? It’s my favorite roller coaster of all time bc of the drop so that’s so confusing to me
Awesome! Can't wait to watch this!
Edit: It was great! Amazing job!
Hope you like it!
I've only been to 6 flags (magic mountain) once, for a very good friend's birthday. A mutual friend of theirs that was there also happened to be a former best friend of mine. One who knows I'm not the best at riding coasters (Love learning about them, terrible big baby when riding them). She convinced the group that Colossus (already twisted I'm pretty sure) was the best way to start that early morning, which was rough enough as it was at 10am, and then got everyone to think that Goliath would be the best next ride. Sadly one of the group was too big to fit in the seat, and I have never faster volunteered to sit out with someone. That thing was *terrifying* to even look at from the plaza, especially when my legs were still shaking after Colossus.
(Thankfully after that was Batman and I loved that one, very wild considering I usually hate loops. Later we wanted to ride Green Lantern since it looked fun, even I was excited for it, but it was down, which knowing what I do now was a blessing even if we didn't realize it at the time)
I love the way you acknowledged what fun, iconic rides they created. Many coaster enthusiasts unfairly trash these awesome rides.
Right, I think they deserve more!
Great video Sam i love it, i am going to try to watch all of your videos so i can catch up lol good job on this my friend keep up the good work
Thank you!!
Another amazing video Sam. I LOVE Goliath, it’s one of my favourites, I had no idea who built it. Cheers
Thank you Mark!
Nicely done. We forget, as consumers, the history, engineering prowess, and imagination required to create the rides that thrill us because they push the boundaries. Great tribute.
Thank you!
MAN, that Six Flags Over Texas song is just fantastic
I love and appreciate the RCT music in this video.
I rode Goliath when it was new, as a teenager on a school trip. Most of what I remember was everyone complaining about the queue theming. The scrawny palm trees provided very little shade, so it was a long wait in direct sun, surrounded by concrete and steel. The day was unusually hot, too, and we were idiots who didn't hydrate, so several kids were sick before even getting on the ride. Might explain some of the hate the coaster gets now, I guess.
I should feel bad it didn’t work out for them
But I’m to busy laughing at their bank account to do so
yeaaa
I love all your videos keeping up my friend....
Thank you so much!
Cool video. I’ll be looking forward for more
Thank you!
Your voice is iconic and I would love for you to narrate every decision in my brain
hahah just imagine it!
I love how you end up your videos, very emotional and yet very hopefull hahah
I try !
I've been going to Six Flags over Texas for years under the impression that Titan was a B&M... The fact that it's actually one of TWO coasters of its kind on earth is actually pretty cool!
So Giovanola would’ve made the first launched inverted coaster if someone wanted 👀
yep!
I bet it definitely would've been more reliable than intamin's "Volcano" too, just because there is always a strong chance someone else can make you a coaster that doesn't constantly break down.
Great video and happy new year
Happy new year!
Only got a chance to ride Goliath once, it was an intense experience though not sure it is one I would repeat. While that first drop was incredible, you can mark me up as one of the people who grays out on the helix near the end. It was the first and only time I've ever experienced that on a coaster and while I don't remember it very well these days, as it was nearly 2 decades ago, I know it wasn't something I wanted to experience again. I suspect Titan would absolutely make me blackout, I can't imagine adding even more sustained G's than what Goliath already had, yikes!
Fascinating video though, incredible how much of an impact Giovanola made on the industry despite such a short lived stint of being a truly independent coaster company.
Thank you!
My good sir, this was GOOD!!!! ❤️
thank you!
Loved this! very interesting
thank you!
Great video!👍🏻
Thanks!
Titan gave me whiplash my first time riding it. Worth it. Bit too chunky to ride these days but I’m working on it. I miss riding my favorite rides
it happens to the best of us!
People hate on the Titan, to the point where now it's being really underrated. The hard brake in the middle of the ride is ridiculous, but once you know to brace yourself for the abrupt stop, it's a really fun ride overall.
Great video as always. Around 12:52 made me chuckle „...confident they could recover. They did not“ Don't know if you spliced the recording there or wanted to make sure to avoid a cliché dramatic pause while reading.
Goliath is so iconic it was even featured in Rollercoaster Tycoon 2.
I waited for this a long time...
Hope you enjoy. I took a break over Christmas
I'm from Switzerland and i live 30 minutes from Intamin and i'm glad that someone made a closer look into this company....

I recall that tidbit on Goliath being called
Millennia. This is what the staff told onlookers of the early construction. I believe there was a model of it with multicolored track sections - Perhaps lost in the tower museum.

I gotta give them credit, the Titan is still my destination coaster every time I go to Six Flags, and I’m a pass holder. Such a good design.
I love looking at the stubby filler track segment on Goliath's brake run when I exit the ride.
Haha right
9:44 such an american advert lol, also thanks for the B&m joke
Also I’ve always wondered that if Goliath and Titan were at Cedar Fair parks would they get the kind of hate that they do… and I get sick of hearing about how Air time is the only thing that matters anymore for a coaster.
Goliath is an Amazing ride. It is super smooth and that first drop still to this day scares the shit out of me. The engineers knew what they were doing because they timed that drop perfectly. You go up that lift hill rather rapidly, but when you start reaching the top the car slows to a crawl and if you ride 1st car you will be hanging onto your butt as you crest the top waiting for the rear of the train to push you down. To me it's still the scariest drop, due to that slowing.
You should ride a B&M dive coaster because I'm pretty sure the only reason it slows down is to prevent any possible airtime on the way down for any row
it is because the forces are too high it needs to slow down to make it not as intense.
@@ExpeditionThemePark I'm sure the reason the car slows to a crawl on Goliath is 1 part intimidation factor and 1 part reduction of the forces at the top of the lift hill. The slowing of the chain could have been Giovanola's response to take pressure off the chain at the top instead of installing a B&M lift hill micro drop.
You sure love RCT soundtracks! Its toyland and egypt theme after the intro!
the best
That double helix on the Titan caused me to blackout. Intense!
it really is!
"There was cake at the reception"
