Don't give them WATCHMEN! You can't really appreciate WATCHMEN as a book (not just the story, but the storytelling) unless you've read comics for a while and kinda get how they work.
I'm on the fence about agreeing on that, I can completely understand what you mean since it's a very deep and heavy book but oddly enough a friend telling me to read Watchmen was what got me back into comic books after a decade of not reading
Excellent video Will, great ending anecdote too. I got a friend into comics by seeing what characters they were most interested in via tv shows and movies, then recommended a trade based on those characters. It was The Flash, and I recommended Flash vol 1 from the New 52- they loved it
That's so funny about Grant Morrison. Legit the first Batman novel someone gave me was The Return of Bruce Wayne and I had no freakin' idea what was going on at all and it wasn't until five years later that I figured everything out about Darkseid and Dr. Hurt being involved. Major no-no to bring in books thick in continuity. Good call
Dude, I dated a girl that made a subtle hint that she wanted me to give up comics for her. Yeah, I'm not with her anymore. I got the message. If she can't like you for liking comics, then she ain't got any business with you!
I am a complete noob who is just now getting into comic books and my LCS got me started on the TPB for Scott Snyder's Batman New 52 Vol. 1 and now I'm hooked on comic books. I have a fantastic local comic store but I'm finding it easier to buy singles digitally on my iPad through Comixology because I don't have to hunt down the singles or more often then not find only issues #2 and up because the 1st issue is always sold out physically.
i got into comics on my own, the biggest problem with comics is where do i start? my brothers are heavy manga readers and they are aware of some of the marvel and dc too. i got into them because of animated movies and series of dc and also live action movies. i think i started reading deathstroke and then injustice. Since injustice is it's own self contained story it's easier to understand. then the comic which truly got me interested is "Y the last man" Problem with mainstream marvel and dc comics is, they overlap so much no one's gonna buy everything to read all that. that's one of the reasons i got way more interested in Image comics. This is also why i love dc's Vertigo imprint
Image publications are very R rated and vertigo books are as well, so be very careful when recommending to someone younger like in high school or middle school. If they watch heavy R rated movies, then go ahead. If they lean PG 13 or have parents that dont allow certain content, stick with marvel, dc, or idw. I bought Kill or be Killed and it has way more R rated content than is allowed in my house. So be aware people.
Haha that batman comment though. I tried recommending loads of stuff to my gf but she got on board with dc rebirth with Wonder Woman. I was shocked but when I told her that it jumps from the start to present day she loved the idea of it and now she can't stop reading it.
I wish I had a friend who was into comics when I started out. I made a lot of mistakes. I read a series too long and it didn't improve, I started with single issues, bought single issues of a series instead of trades, I bought a longbox first instead of a shortbox. I did this all on my own. No friends or family to help me. It was a learning curve.
Kai Williams, I messed up a lot, too. We didn’t have a comic book shop when I was growing up. My local discount store sold blind bags of 10 comics for $6, though; and I just bought those over and over. Even when I noticed that they included at least 4 “useless” issues per pack. I enjoyed getting a taste of all kinds of different series, but I didn’t find anything I wanted to read a second issue of until a Fantastic Four comic. The issue where Lyja is revealed. While I am glad I have that issue (no one recommends the Fantastic Four, especially not the Claremont run) I did have a small pile of NASCAR and W.I.N.X. comics to deal with afterward ^_^
One of my coworkers has been stopping by my desk for months and casually asking me which comics I'm reading that week. Until one day I had Unstoppable Wasp #1 and something about it just clicked with her. And she asked if she could borrow it without any prompt. You should wait for them to show interest and for them to come to you.
Instructions not clear, I forced my whole neighborhood to read Venom. By the way, you got a new subscriber, greetings from Spain and excuse my "symbiont english"
Trades are way better for staring out. I have a whole bunch of random singing issues that are out of order from when I was first starting and I'm probably never going to read them because I can't fill in the ones I'm missing. Don't waist money like I did, buy trades :P
Jackie Donnelly I hate the idea of reading issues they are filled with annoying adds and the paper isn't good quality. I like the ability of pulling it off of a shelf and reading casually.
I can... Y:the last man had a terrible ending!! I recomended Injustice year one to a girl that had basic DC knowledge(cartoons and movies) and she really enjoyed!!
Also, don't give anybody the clone saga.

Amen to that!
Also i recommend getting them invincible because that series is amazing
Friend: What comics would you recommend for beginers?
Me: Give Crisis on Infinite Earths a go
Ha Final Crisis
Even people who know the dc universe well find it confusing

New to comics, your videos are a fantastic guide into this new hobby. Cheers bro!
Great advice my wife has recently approached me expressing some interest can't wait to get her hooked.
This is fantastic advice and Y The Last Man really is an amazing series.

Lol, universal contingency plan: Y: The Last Man.
Dude, I dated a girl that made a subtle hint that she wanted me to give up comics for her. Yeah, I'm not with her anymore. I got the message. If she can't like you for liking comics, then she ain't got any business with you!
kevrulz06 fuck yeah to that
This was good, and then the Y: The Last Man remark happened, and it became spot-freaking-on

Thanks for this, I've been trying to get my friends into comics for a while and this really helped. Majority of them are huge Marvel fans.

This should be renamed how to socialize for comic nerds.
The Washable Ocean Really? Most comic nerds seem pretty social to me
Thunder Goku, it's a joke.
Very good advice! Especially the reminder that you can't force someone's interest in something, no matter how cool it is!

Single issues stress me out. I haven't gone the the comic shop in a long time and I feel guilty bc I think they are still holding my stuff O_o

I'm getting my friends into Archie as we all love watching Riverdale
I hope i can get my nephew into comic books one day.
Give them a TP of Saga (totally posted this without watching the entire video)
Hand them first Omnibus
Astonishing x men. Until joss whedon stopped writing them would be great for a new comic reader. That was a well written series.
My friend wants me to give her a comic book, to prove that they can be just as deep as books. Any suggestions? She doesn't like superheroes, btw.
This was a weird video, but the batman versus girlfriend story at the end made up for it.
so funny, I actually bought my girlfriends Y the last man to get her into comics XD
I might try and give my girlfriend the 1st trade for Gotham Academy since it's similar to Harry Potter
The Gauntlet?! That was meh, the only thing I liked from it was the Rhino stuff. Have them try JMS run or Big Time.
Drop it and move on? I'm not good at that
Gail simmone.... gross
