I’ll be there in 5 days. In Nürnberg. A chill one more for rehabilitation. Still nervous. I’ll have 2 weeks covid quarantine before being socialised with the rest of the prison and I’m scared that that will be like solitary confinement, I’m scared I’ll struggle to be alone with myself and without stimulation, maybe without sunlight and therefore any sense of time. I will survive.

Very true. This documentary was a compilation of others. There are more disturbing documentaries about children in prison. And in most cases it takes YEARS for them to go to trial. And the saddest part is some are completely innocent and once they’re released they were turned into HARDENED criminals behind bars. So it’s like a flipping crazy cycle.

The robot narration can get annoying at times, but otherwise this is one of the best documentaries on life in prisons I have ever seen. Seeing the children kept with dangerous adults in that one prison in the Philippines breaks my heart. Why is that allowed? Insane. All they are doing is setting those kids up for a life of trauma and crime.

@@bagw3llbeatz422 What could a six year old or whatever even do to deserve that treatment? Even if the kids are murderers, it still doesn't make it ok for them to be sexually abused by adult inmates. Plus, I highly doubt that the kids did anything as bad as all that, I mean how many prepubescent children get the urge to kill? They probably stole from shops or something petty like that, I mean this is the Philippines we're talking about, a place where Duterte had people shot on sight by paramilitary police forces for smoking pot. And if these children are truly pure evil as you imply, then the correct course of action would be to painlessly euthanize them, not torture them by keeping them with adults that r@pe them routinely until they get released eventually only to go out and spread misery around further, terrorizing others as they had done to them. I don't believe these children are truly irredeemable monsters, but that is the ethical way a state should deal with violent sociopaths and psychopaths. The archaic concept of torturing people for committing crimes only makes things worse, it just hardens petty criminals into sociopathic thugs. I'd rather die than be one of those kids for even a week.

Those children in Philippines jails broke my heart. But by my life's experiences, I wouldn't show any emotion if I saw them in person. A broken society gives rise to broken children, they've seen so much depravity at such a young age, that nothing can ever totally mend their minds and souls.

Most of the problems that cause these outcomes are more than just the crimes they committed. Its not good to do bad things, but it can be just as bad to wash away anything deemed as bad without actually acknowledging the real issue. Maybe spend more time around people who've been though alot before going and acting like what you have to say means anything

And what about the innocent people who end up there? Thousands of people.... furthermore, try to have some human decency. Not everyone who kills someone is a monster. Some are, but not all. I mean there are countless stories of young men under the age of 18 in the US for example, who are not taught morals, have no father in their lives, and the father figures they DO have are ruthless drug lords engaged in turf wars with rival drug dealers... now, these immoral father figures will often convince these young foolish boys to do their dirty work for them via drive by shootings and such. Years later these boys grow into men, often in prison, and they realize how much of an unthinking fool they had been and can have a complete change of behavior and morality. Now would you not give that person a second chance if they can demonstrate that they are a changed man? Not even after 25 years of being locked up? Forgiveness is a virtue. I bet you also probably hold on to personal grudges in your own life. That kind of grudge holding will wreck your mind. I know from my own experience.

Someone is accused and they are thrown into a cell, sometimes for years before they have any semblance of a trial. Especially if they are poor. Locked up, no way of communicating with their families, having to pay for their food, wearing the same clothes, no showers, sweltering in the heat, freezing in the cold, and no hope. And they are guilty of NOTHING.

Many of these prison systems suffer from endemic corruption at all levels and this is often perpetuated by a corrupt criminal justice system, a dysfunctional broader legal system and corrupt political systems that ensure people at the top can be bought off or also siphon funds that should be spent on improving the criminal justice system.
Oftentimes, we in the West forgot just how diverse the world's prisons are and complain about how many comforts / opportunities are afforded to prisoners these days but I know where I'd prefer my loved ones to get sentenced and serve their time. Many countries have not modernised their prisons, yet alone taken the necessary measures to prioritise prisoners' physical and mental health.
I don’t think too many of the people in this video have the chance to enjoy a roast meal with a glass of wine for Christmas. Yet alone play videogames and go to the prison gym between their therapy sessions and free online higher educational opportunities.
Perhaps, things have gone a bit far in my country. I recall one fellow who, after a few weeks on the streets, said he couldn’t wait to rob somebody and go back to prison.
There, he faced no rent, no utility bills, and no grocery costs. He didn’t have to work. He would lease out the home he inherited from his mother whilst he was in prison and for the lack of any significant costs, that money (together with a small government payment), was making him a wealthy man.
Prison should be seen as a negative for everybody - in the sense that it should not be enjoyed more than life in society. We now rely on encouraging the growth of good morals to make earning a prison sentence an embarrassment at a personal level.
We don't try to shame prisoners into 'good' behaviour or rely purely on punitive means. Today, we try to encourage regret on an emotional, moral basis.
Not everybody however, is capable of growing a good moral compass and for the lack of old fashioned discrimination or punishments (which weren't necessarily good things), they won't feel ashamed of the deeds they did to get them there or feel any kind of regret.

I remember a long time ago seeing chained prisoners working on the road like in this documentary. Why did they stop? There's so much more trash on the streets & roadways...this needs to come back.

Your key words “I remember a long time ago seeing chained prisoners”
They’re called a “chain gang” also if you watched other documentaries other states have something similar….almost like a “boot camp” but still prison.
The leaders of the chain gang better know how to lead the rest- AND as you saw they’re all linked so they HAVE to learn to march and to work together outside in order to get things done.
And YES- it should be brought back to ALL prisons. It’s another form of discipline.

Sherif Joe Apaio definitely kept a lot of people from going back to jail with his Pink underwear and bologna sandwiches.

His tactics didn't deter crime any more than the death penalty does.

@@shellos8 I don’t approve of the Death Penalty and think it should be abolished, as well as solitary confinement except in extreme cases, but I did agree with a lot of Apaio’s tactics. If more inmates had to endure what those prisoners did I doubt there would be as much of the terrible crime like the way it is now with the no bail and the releasing of violet criminals. Which actually brings me to where I say we should remove all those “soft on crime” politicians.

@@shellos8 also, adding to my reply to you. I agree that like the death penalty for hard core criminals in prisons Sheriff Apaio’s tactics wouldn’t work in most cases. I’m thinking along the lines that Sheriff Apaio wasn’t running a prison. He was running more like a farm rehab jail. Most of the people in there were likely to be first time offenders, maybe some were repeat petty crimes or misdemeanors. Warrants, domestic abuse. Things of that nature. So there was still time to reach that segment of the population and maybe wake them up a little bit. I’m not saying it would have worked for everyone but it was worth a try.

How Australia became a prison and then a country. We should have more prison like that. Are there any more places like that on Earth?
