"Two weeks?!! Are you having a laff?"
Our work in converting Amanda into a Brit is almost compete.😁🤣🤣🤣
I was actually coming into the comments to say exactly that.
When viewing her early work, comparing it to now … it’s pretty clear she becomes more and more british by each video. 😂
@@Zippy66 tin bath also acceptable rhyming slang!
you are having a bubble !
Amanda is a Brit with a US accent. She's more British than US now. 😁😁😁😁😁. Btw US TV which was thrust upon me when I went there is the worse in the World. Far too many ads. Love the way Amanda Says "Having a laff!" Wonderful UK Saying.
Not only do I get paid holidays in the UK, once I came down with flu at the start of my holiday so I got a doctor's report and converted the time off to sick pay and took my paid time off the next month.
You are allowed to be sick in your own time, such is the free society we live in! I always get sick at a weekend.
I notice you are sounding more British in some of your phrases. Love the channel🍔
Yeah was thinking the same thing.
Phrases like ' Are you 'aving a laugh '😀😀
😉
My US associate recently visited London for the first time and said our sandwiches were bland but I think it's less sugar and addictives that makes things taste different.
Never get used to bathroom stalls in the US! Always feel like the US is missing half a bathroom stall door somewhere!!
"addictives"… additives ;-)
Doesnt matter how many jurisdictions there are, a store is only in one and thus could easily display the total price including all the sales taxes - just needs the store computer to be told what to add on and print out the shelf edge labels accordingly - in the UK we have varying VAT rates (equivalent of sales tax) for different types of products and its all pre-calculated and displayed
It’s like US society is set up to hamstring the average person at every turn! 🤯
I expect it has more to do with being unable to advertise the product at a certain price if tax is different state by state
@@scottsmith2173 The tax may vary by state but it is still calculated at the point of sale, therefore calculable in advance and could be put on the product/shelf
@@davehopkin9502 Yes I get how it works. The point I am making is if company has a TV ad and advertises a product for $2, if tax has already been calculated then one state will have it for $2.25 and another $2.20 etc. The point I am making this could be a reason among many. I get the point it is easy to have tax already added to the label. It's a perception thing
@@scottsmith2173 Then they do a national advert and simply state $2 plus sales tax.... not exactly beyond the wit of man is it.....
What I love is the British comes through in your accent from time to time, you’re one of us
Glo'al stop is developing nicely.
@@frogandspanner She be talkin' right proper in no time flat, an no mistake. Bit more practise an they'll think you're a bleedin' native.
The lack of holidays certainly explains the gun violence, the only way to get a break from work and still have a roof over your head and be fed is to go to prison.
One thing that most non Americans don’t realise is that prisons are businesses too, you will be working, producing goods for both public contracts and private businesses (I once read that 40% of US white goods are made in prisons). They are paid at between 13 and 52 cents per hour! The US also has the biggest prison population and the highest incarceration rate in the world, not really surprising when they’ve re-invented slavery to pay for it.
My wife and I went to a American restaurant and we had to cancel the main course as the starter was more than enough for both of us.
Jay walking seems the craziest thing to me. I can't imagine being arrested for just crossing the street
The craziest thing is how law abiding Americans are towards jaywalking too!
When I visited the US ( Detroit ) in 1969 I crossed the road as you would normally do here in the UK, cop blows whistle, traffic comes to a halt, me thinks must be an incident but no they were all looking at me, what had I done I thought. Yes I had crossed the road at the wrong point. My dream at the age of 76 is to go back just one more time to the US.
@@blackvulcan100 We went on holiday to California in '95. We were crossing a wide but not too busy road and were about 6-10 foot across when this woman started shouting and dragging us on to the path! We were shocked but she quickly explained that it's illegal and we were lucky there were no police about! We went from "What's the matter with this mad old bat???" to "Oh my goodness! Thank you so much!!!" very, very quickly!😂😂
I remember when an American friend of mine visited. I crossed O'Connell Street. He was horrified and gave out hell. He refused to cross until at the correct crossing point with a green light. The thing was that it was four AM! There was literally not a single piece of traffic ANYWHERE on the street. It is a very long wide straight street and there was not a single vehicle anywhere within 100 metres, let alone moving!
He was utterly appalled to see a Garda, a member of the police force, himself crossing the entirely empty street.
It is crazy. It basically indicates that adults there have so little mental ability that they can't be trusted to be responsible for crossing a road without being herded to specific points. An admission that must be acutely embarrassing for the whole nation.
First time I visited states, Chicago, a guy said he gave a girl a playful pat on the fanny, nearly dropped my beer , you’ll know by now the different meanings
To be fair, a man shouldn't give a girl a playful pat on either the American fanny or the British one!
I worked for a US oil company in the UK I got 5 weeks plus 8 days paid leave, 35 hour basic week, 1 year continuous sickness leave on full pay and 1 year on half pay and a NON contributory final salary pension at 50. My US colleagues were pissed.
Haha to hear an American say “are you having a laugh?” 😂😂😂 you are definitely becoming a Brit. 👍🏼
Amanda have you tried explaining to Americans how British police can do their jobs without guns? It’s something that my American friends just cannot grasp as even possible.
I'm sure I've heard some Americans talking about annual vacations saying they have to find cover for their job whilst they're away. If that's true it is truly crazy. As well as our mandatory paid leave, it is the company's responsibility to arrange cover, not the employee's.
I've visited the US a couple of times and found just about everything alien.
Purchase tax is crazy. Even if there are 7000 odd jurisdictions, there's nothing to prevent shops marking goods with the price customers will actually pay. If that price can be calculated at the till, then why can it not be calculated in advance?
Love these videos you do as I’m moving to America in June this year and you are so informative many thanks and keep up the great work ❤️🇬🇧🇺🇸
You sounded so British when you said, are you having a laugh?😂😂. Well done
Also when she says ... 'buut and waat'.. spoken like a true brit 🏌♀️💯
Hopefully next time she’ll say ‘you’re having a laugh’ which is probably the more common way of saying it….😂😂
Nearly died laughing. Just as you were about to comment on direct advertising - We went to a commercial for Strepsils. The timing was perfect.
I live in uk and USA . I’m English. Food. In usa there are very few if any restrictions on ingredients. Note : the ingredients in usa are designed to create taste addictions .. sugar, salts, corn syrups etc .
When we went on our first holiday to the US. We ordered a large pizza, 4 days later we were still eating it. We also found the sales tax very confusing as we were driving through different States from New York to LA. As for the holiday entitlement no one ever believed, l had accumulated 35 working days paid holiday. Loved the vidio Amanda, it brought back a lot of good memories. Keep up the good work. PS : Other than on a police officer I have never seen any one carrying a gun, on the meny times I have worked and been n holiday to the US.
That's because they may have been concealed weapons as only a couple of States allow them to be carried openly (holstered) but a rifle or shotgun may be carried openly (visible) in a vehicle.
The sales tax here in the US is downright ridiculous! It does vary from state to state plus,it,also, varies, within the state - between counties and also cities. I’ve lived in North Carolina for over 20 years and still can figure it out, especially at the grocery store! Before NC I spend most,of my life in Arizona and had the same problem just buying something in one city and then going to the same store in another city with different tax. With technology it would be so refreshing if the prices everywhere would just Inc,use the tax!
@@tonys1636Yes! Although some people (like my husband) will carry his .357 under his car seat without having the extra license. Many years ago I would be appalled, nowadays I’ve been thinking about getting a gun for myself!
Thanks for the video Amanda ! Loved it as always !! 😁
Hi There! It is not just the absence of paid annual leave there are other things like paid maternity leave...Here in Australia there is also FACS leave for when you need to be at home for the plumber/electrician etc...Long service leave...Our federal government has just legislated for up to 10 days pa as "domestic violence leave" so vulnerable women(mostly) have paid time to get away for a violent situation...Cheers!
Why should diners or drinkers tip up to 20% to make up the shortfall in wages that employers aren't paying ?
Ideally they should petition their lawmakers to rectify that absurd situation, but until that actually happens diners/drinkers should tip up to 20% (assuming they can reasonably afford it) to make up the shortfall in wages because of the massive shortfall in wages their fellow citizens are suffering. The same reason that beach-goers should help some one suffering heat stroke rather than complain - however accurately - about the lack of lifeguard.
@@dupersuper1938 Not sure that patrons should have to supplement anyone's wages. When bars in NYC are charging $12 to $15 for a bottle of beer , there can be no excuse for not paying a living wage to barstaff & waiters.
@@philipmccarthy6175 They shouldn't and there isn't: very true. But until said employees actually get paid a living wage, not tipping as some sort of high horse protest hurts the employees, not the employers at fault.
@@dupersuper1938 if it's not the employers fault then whose is it ? There should be an improvement (by law) of the minimum wage to reflect the cost of living. In other developed countries there's generally a legally enforced minimum wage that ensures at least a fair wage in the service industry.
@@philipmccarthy6175 It is the employers fault, and there should be a law. You don't seem to be understanding me at all.
Best show so far. I’m a Kiwi living in Canada so I can relate to most of the comparisons. The problem with the gun stuff is there is no responsibilities going along with the rights. So so silly. Tipping is another area that is not working for them. Just pay your workers right. Cooks usually get paid a lot less than the hotly dressed waitress. Good luck though if you think USA can change. They do think it’s the greatest place on earth and are not open to suggestions from outsiders. Sorry USA give me Canada any day! Yes we are big and have the same stupid tipping thing going but we don’t shot anyone over it!
With the guns I grew up in Australia and guns are fairly rare. I know people can get guns for hunting but that is more of a country thing rather than in the suburbs. I find companies that pay workers under the minimum wage with the expectation that tips will make up the difference is scummy.
Amanda, you are becoming more and more British every time I watch you. "Are you avin a larf". 😂😂😂✌️♥️🇬🇧
Thanks Amanda. Hope you all have a great weekend too. Be good.
I remember living in Tronno for a year as a child. There were absolutely loads of Cable/TV channels. We only had x 3 in the UK. I don't a lot remember if Ads where a feature then but certainly on subsequent visits in later life to Canada & USA. I remember a particular advert/commercial that was broadcast often in 2005...THE NEW DODGE RAM!!! It drove me nuts. The Ads were before the credits, in the middle of the programme, before the ending of the credits and wait for it.....after the credits! Yayyyyyyy!!!! Finally, I noticed that North Americans still use the Fahrenheit temperature measurement and not the 24 hour clock. In the UK, we've moved on from that in the last 30-40 years.
i understand quite a lot about habbits ect and difference when your in america i spent 10 months there started in texas and ended up in seattle was Great time. i am talking 30+ years ago. and i didnt mind tipping for the service at all as i knew servers only got minimum wage and yet they were allways nice and polite and had a smile for you !
Apart from the hidden sales tax, you have to check every hotel bill and car hire for the hidden extras they stick on the bill, hoping you won’t notice.
Everything seems to be so expensive in America. I noticed a Brit on holiday on his site was asked if he wanted to give a tip when he was in a takeaway getting his food. 😲
The guns were next to the toy section in Walmart when i went 21years ago.
And the bread was almost as sweet as cake.
I really didnt see many overweight people though. But we were out walking and at the beach alot.
Eating peanut butter with jelly or jam as we call it in the UK is something I didn't understand until I tried it. I now know that peanut butter and jam sandwiches are actually quite tasty.
Try a Peanut Butter, Banana and Apricot jam sandwich. Its very nice.
@@steviedoo7673 I'll gave that a try 😁
I tried it I thought it was disgusting
I'd never let my child go in to a beauty pageant at that age
Agreed. It's seriously disturbing and strikes me as a pedo's paradise.
Donald Trump is notorious for going backstage at his Beauty pageants to ogle the underage girls getting undressed. Along with his old buddy Jeffrey Epstein.

Forgive me chaps but I havent watched Amanda in "yonks" sadly, through losing my landline and internet for nearly a year (dont ask it just makes a grown man cry lol) - even though I have been subscribed to this channel for two years or more - my bad.
Thirty seconds in and I thought YOU my girl are finally losing your yanky accent and starting to sound more and more like a native Brit even without the British euphemisms, - bet its listening to her husband and the kids everyday lol the rolled rrrrr's are definately softening and becoming less pronounced and the punctuation in the diction is becoming more and more British style clipped, absolutely love it, the sexy mid atlantic tone is brilliant to hear.......go girl....absolutely love the look of indignant surprise on your face at some of the American "normals" compared to over here, I WONT lose this channel and forget about it ever again.... stayned on moi lol- sorry.... a Scouser trying to do a cockney accent is just painfull lol.
I was aware of everything here via 50+ years of watching American TV & films . I think there are probably many more European things that American visitors don't understand, purely because Americans have been watching the same stuff as us 😊
I do love my country as an American, that being said, we could learn something from our European friends.
Really????? You think so?.........
@@scottkilla Naaahhh!
I go to the US a couple or three times a year... I will not tip anything over about 5%, and that's only if the service has been good (and I don't mean annoyingly fawning). If service staff in the US won't fight for a decent living wage then I'm not going to help perpetuate businesses ripping their staff off. Yes, I've had some cracking arguments over it, but what it boils down to is that it's not my job to pay their wages. Oh, and don't get me started on the American pastime of going to schools for target practice.
Amanda, with regards to the food subject.
I LOVE USA.
Parents bought a house in Kissimmee, yes, They were "Snowbirds "
I remember going to a restaurant, and my parents said,
"order the meat platter "
When it arrived, I was gobsmacked!
Any type of meat, mostly roasted, came on an oversized, easel type plate.
The plate, was shaped to be carried on the waitresses shoulder, around her neck, to under her chin.
We couldn't eat it all, so took the remainder home.
Made sandwiches for the next 3 days.
I'm not a cook, so loved all the food outlets, Cheese Dogs for breakfast, burgers for lunch, then anyrhing from Chinese to pizzas, for Teatime, and leftovers for Supper.
Even stopping at an Italian restaurant, after a day out, the lasagne could have fed 3 people.
As an Australian living in Florida, I love the 'Florida Man' stories - but there was one about a 'Florida Woman' - she was pulled over on an Interstate near Miami, and while driving at freeway speeds, she was shaving a rather 'personal' area....
We need photographic input here!
😉
I had a 12 month contract in the states. Whilst the people were friendly and interested in me being a multinational European I did not understand the work/life balance out there and really struggled with the tipping and taxes. Oh and the guns. Ugh. Fortunately I was in CA so it was less in your face and a bit more cosmopolitan but I can safely say I love visiting the USA but could never live there regardless of the size of the homes or the salary.
American bread is basically cake compared to most other countries.
I have been to the states a few times and the added sales tax was the biggest shocker.
I Googled that, and yes apparently you can buy ammo in pharmacies in America.
British prescription drugs always come with a leaflet that explains what the drug is for and all its possible side effects.
All service staff should gather together and go on strike at the same time, businesses will not be able to operate, unless they pay a living wage.
Absolutely love your channel Amanda you say things as you see them and that counts for a lot on you tube . As a matter of interest how come you moved to the UK. I will always regret never going to the USA and I'm to old and not in the best of health now . Anyway keep up your good work its funny , informative , and always great to watch . Many thanks
When you consider that we used to have a competition for good TV adverts in the U.K. as some of them were quite amusing. Nothing would qualify nowadays, no one would consider it. It’s typical, as I’m typing this an advert has just appeared on your site.
When I was in the US as a university student, it took me about half a year to get used to the large size of cars.
At first I had the impression there was something wrong with my eyes and were magnifying things.
An other interestingly disgusting idea is buying bullets in pharmacies.
I guess whoever came up with the idea, considered them as a medicinal cure for everything lol.
The annual leave thing for sure. The tipping, portion sizes and even salr/sugar excesses in food is all about most profit for least expenditure. the US is also about excess and disposable culture which with the issues facing the world at the moment. That's one thing you notice in tv shows from the 70's/80's and you see the streets covered in rubbish. Everything is all on the go and gives the impression "live to work" is more important than "work to live."
Going back to the sugar thing, with the amount of sugar in Subway's bread it's seen as a cake for tax purposes in Ireland.
In Ireland Subway sandwiches are charged extra tax because the high sugar content of the bread means that it is classed as cake which has a higher tax rate.
Why do the put so much sugar in the bread? I guess the Irish are not to smart.
@@joeysausage3437 Subway is an American fast food chain, they decide the recipe, which probably already has less sugar to make it more palatable to the Irish. Just like when Mountain Dew launched in the UK they had already drastically reduced the sugar in the recipe, but were told it had to be marketed as an energy drink due to the high sugar levels, so they reluctantly reduced the sugar even more.
@@joeysausage3437 1g of sugar per 100g of bread is pretty much standard in europe. Especially if you buy bread made in bakery. Some USers say that a lot of sugar is required to help it raise before it is put in oven but I just bought big, fat, soft loaf of multi grain bread made in one of the best bakeries in Finland that only has 1g of sugar per 100g of bread. I haven't even tasted but since it's made by Toivonen I already know it's going to taste amazing.
As for the sugar thing. That's why I prefer Mexican products. They tend to be dramatically lower in sugar. Plus they also nearly always use sugar cain sugar and not High Fructose Corn Syrup. I'm a big fan of Mexican pastries. The flavor you get rather than just the taste of sugar.
Hi Amanda. Never been to America but heard alot about the tipping thing. Ive heard that it might as well be mandatory, waiting staff expect it. That I just cannot agree with and much prefer it to be at the customers discretion. I even hate places in the UK that add on a service charge, which at some places is as high as 20%! In my younger days I wouldn't dare ask for it to be removed because it might possibly cause resentment from the staff. But these days, as I consider a service charge to be down right audacious, I won't hesitate at all and tell them (in an asking like style) for it to be removed. Then I'll decide whether to leave a tip or not, as per the video you featured, based on level of service etc. As always you've done a great video here Amanda giving us public the opportunity to air our views about such issues, plesse keep them coming. All the best and TTFN (Ta Ta For Now). 👍.
A waiter or waitress makes about $2.20 an hour , the rest is made up in tips.
Most service staff are competent and pleasant and work very hard to make your visit pleasant.
I tend to tip at least 20% but this is discretionary and bad service should not be rewarded.
The tipping in restaurants here in America is due to those businesses paying their employees only around $2.50-3.50 per hour as a wage. (Louisiana)
Talking of mad British newspaper headlines, "Freddie Starr Ate My Hamster" comes to mind.....
Never visited America but met s lot of American soldiers while serving in the army in Germany also at usaf bases in england always got on well with them but wouldn't fancy liveing there because it doesn't seem safe to be out at night enjoyed the video
Buying a gun in Walmart in America 🇺🇸 that is seriously frightening 😱 Compared
To the Uk 🇬🇧 I’ve only seen one
Fire arms shop and that’s in north west London and thankfully those businesses are now very rare now .
If you are in the US then address tips as a personal gift instead because some places just takes it in and after the owners cut the rest is spread to the employees to make it to the minimum wage for everyone.
It's better to just not leave a tip and hand the server a gift but you have to actually state that it is a gift when you do that (direct verbal agreement trumps signed agreements that were entered in beforehand).
In Ireland, the Irish Supreme Court ruled that Subway "bread" isn't legally bread as it has too much sugar and should thus be classified as confectionary instead.
Hi Amanda, some American food gets me. I love bacon and pancakes with maple syrup but grits? In 1999 I was in Valdosta GA and almost drowned in the amount of sweet tea they got me to drink. One woman cooked collad greens for the whole family but washed those greens in her top loader washing machine first, now to me that is crazy.
My son got a green card in 2017 . Left the USA to return to Europe in 2019 for many of the reasons just outlined combined with the attitudes of the police and politicians ( although they are just as obnoxious and condescending in Europe BUT you have a greater choice of parties/candidates ). Stop sign were a HUGE irritant especially when visibility in all directions is unobstructed .
"Are you having a laugh" You're definitely integrating 😁
What some US Americans find hard to get their heads around is that there is a difference between not understanding something and simply realising it's idiotic.
Europe has a 15 million man Islamic standing army on its soil...
Yes and Europeans do not understand America, but act like like they know everything.
@@kylelaforest9919 Not true. No European believes they understand how a nation can be so cretinously stupid that they elect a criminal orange turd as their leader.

There is greatness in America! It's just having problems right now Dont feel too bad!!
Taste buds do adapt to the amount of a core taste you consume. So for example if you made two bowls of chicken soup exactly the same except you made one low salt and one high salt content. A person who had a low salt diet would find the low salt soup really tasty but the high salt bowl would just taste like salt, whilst someone with a high salt diet would find the low salt soup bland and the high salt soup really tasty. Probably why some Americans find British food bland it's not, we just tend to have a much lower level of salt and sugar in our food than the USA.
All countries have differences and variety is the spice of life, but, not all differences are equal.
the thing with the sales tax in the US can really be annoying. Say you have just $20 to but something and by the price tags you pick up that $40....you have no idea how much that is actually going to costs you until you get to the checkout. To me that is a staggering idea
There's a joke I once heard, a Texan and a Brit were chatting and the Texan said Texas is the largest state in the Union, the Brit said "Oh really?" Then the Texan said "We have the largest cars and trucks AND the largest highways". Again the Brit looked impressed. Then the Texan said " do you know we grow the largest potatoes and have the biggest steaks?" By now the Brit was fed up and just said "Really? But then we grow our potatoes and steaks to fit our mouths".
I never realised that the American's didn't get paid holidays i also hate adverts they get everywhere and some of them get annoying those beauty pageants are so wrong surely it effects the kids mentally you have some great reactions Amanda ❤
Don’t get paid holidays, sick pay or maternity/paternity leave as the norm
I’m American and I totally agree with you. I never knew until recently, that other countries do not have tipping just about everywhere. Paid vacations of weeks or more? Americans are lucky if they get a week. But - just last year I found out that my sin got a paid 6-8 week time off when his wife had a baby! I never want to hear him complain about his work again!
Yeah, I have heard that there are too many TV commercials in America, that would probably drive me nuts! I was just wondering are there any TV channels in America that are like the BBC in that they don't have any commercials at all?🤔
I don’t think so lol

@Andy Newton PBS is public broadcasting. It's funded by donations, so it doesn't have commercials but sometimes will have fundraising drives. This is where shoes like Sesame Street, Mr Roger's Neighborhood, and Bob Ross's Joy of Painting came from, but not typically compelling drama or comedies. But yes, they license older BBC shows. Just heard on the radio. If everyone in the world lived to the same standard as Americans, we would need 4 Planets !
Every time I visit the States, I always find I notice how sweet certain foods are by comparison to in Britain- especially bread, cereals and most drinks. I also find some of the food is very salty by comparison. Especially in restaurants and fast food outlets. Not that this is always unpleasant or unwanted, its probably because I don't add salt too most foods I eat except fish and chips. I usually don't add salt to a lot of the foods I cook from scratch, especially if using stock cubes as they contain loads of salt anyway, preferring the use of herbs and spices.
We in Europe are testing 4 days working week, while in the USA they do not have payid vacation. Insame, like other things. I am from Czech republic and I have 5 weeks of paid vacation, I am working Moday to Friday and for 7.5 hours a day so 37.5 hours a week.
Amanda when you said laugh your accent changed! I have family in America, and did notice the extra large portions and so many ads. I remeber two cops come into a diner. One of them was incredibly skinny and the other was round. It looked like the number 10 had walked in
The state of some the vehicles you see driving about in the US, utter wrecks, the how and why they're allowed out and about is beyond me.
Not only bigger portions helping gain weight, but also lack of walking anywhere in most states and also lack of free time to actually keep do exercise if working 2 jobs etc
I get 8 weeks personal leave +national holidays + university closure days (Christmas eve to 2nd Jan).

I've spent a week in a hotel in South San Francisco. There wasn't a buffet breakfast what I usually get in Europe, but you can order food even for breakfast like in a restaurant.
On my first morning when I got my food I've instantly asked the waitress: "Are you trying to kill me with this amount of sugar?"
I am American and sugar content in our foods are outrageous. I am diabetic and trying to find no sugar or low sugar foods is very difficult. It is also very expensive. Needless to say, we have overweight problems.
Yikes the speed he as going with that consumer add would make me switch channels

In the US, the tip is the difference between the servers' wages and what the wages *SHOULD BE BY LAW* (except the law exempts them, or rather their -slave masters- employers)
The restroom stall gaps is especially weird for such a nation of prudes.

I noticed during the house/ bills segment he missed out the property/ land tax that needs to be paid yearly. Where as in the UK, we buy land and that is it no yearly tax on it.
Are you not paying your council tax?

Toilet doors are freaky but I have been in a few bars in USA where the actual bog is just in a corner with no surrounding at all or a row of 3 with just a small side panel like you get on some urinals luckily never used one but on an all day bender good chance going to need to take a No2 before night is over. As to time off it just shows how business in the USA run things and have such control over the Government by lobbying and support for parties.
Indeed, the "Are you having a laugh"-comment shows Amanda has really absorbed European culture ;-)

I was driving from San Francisco up to Seattle, the roadside toilets didn't have doors at all. I would have had more privacy walking through the car park and having a dump in the woods next to it! Florida might be weird in lots of ways, but at least they had doors on their stalls!
I think the biggest difference between America and the rest of the world is the insular attitude of the people. So many Americans don't know anything about the rest of the world and are more than happy to remain blissfully ignorant.
I'm not saying the best Americans are those you'll meet abroad, far from it, but it staggered me how little many Americans know about the state next to theirs forget the rest of the world.
For funny/weird news headlines, you can't go past Australia's Northern Territory paper The NT Times. Apart from regular stories about crocodiles (NT is full of crocs), this is one of its classic headlines: "Why I Stuck a Cracker Up My Clacker!" True.
Lol what?!
When I first went to California in the 80s, I was really thrown by a checkout assistant saying 'Hi, how are you today?'. I didn't know if I was supposed to answer or not. Of course, 40 years later I know that you're not. I also remember being flumoxed trying to turn on a tap (fawcett). It was a mixer tap with a ball type operation. Fine for fighter jet pilots but not for someone used to separate hot and cold 'twist on/off' taps.
To be honest though, I can understand why Americans want guns. If your nearest police station is 50 miles or more away you need something for self protection.
The whole gun worship thing.
The credits at the beginning of programmes go on forever.
As to the gun death being higher in the US, if we take away the legally aquired guns it could come below 10 per 100k, but it would still be between two or three times as high as in most European countries.
It has always confused me why the USA has airports literally packed wall to wall right before major holidays then eventually I found out about the ridiculous lack of holidays and it made sense. The airports are packed because people have no time to drive anywhere. In Australia we have 12 public holidays this year alone before you even look at the leave my employer gives me.
I don't agree on the tax issue either. I don't care if there is 10 tax differences or 7000. If I walk into your bricks and mortar store the price on the shelf absolutely can be the whole correct price. If they know what to charge at the register they also know what to write on the label on the shelf. The only people who think it is hard are American store owners.
