What a great band. Loved Joe's high lonesome sound , he sure could play some great bluegrass, really miss him. But thank God this has been preserved and we can still enjoy his music.
I wonder how many people know that his name was Joe Valenti. He had never even heard bluegrass until he went into the army and someone used to play it. He went crazy over it and started learning everything he could. As to the name? The first time he was introduced on stage the person didn't know how to pronounce his name so they just cut it to Joe Val!
If you ever heard Joe sing "Sweetheart, You Done Me Wrong".....that's all you need to hear to know there will NEVER be another Joe Val. Oh, how I wished that song got recorded.
'So glad to see this excellent video - thanks! Shortly before his death he was on at Matlock Bath in the UK. His suit hung on him and he was clearly ill. In spite of this his performance was just great and, when speaking to him aftrer the show he shook my hand with a sure strong handshake and spoke very warmly of his reception here in the UK. His LP "Beatle Country" brought him to popular attention and is an absolute classic. This video just gets better as it goes along and is an excellent memorial to this giant of a man and bluegrass icon for me. I love "There's a ramshackle shack!" The most poignant example of, "Only the good die young..." There'll be some cracking Bluegrass happening up there...

These guys are so focused, they are standing completely still
I saw Joe play in Woods Hole several times and later opening for Seldom Scene at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Va.
