I think for your game in particular the Valheim style would be a better approach. As you said, blocks may not look right with the rest of the game's style. The Valheim style can also have a decent amount of customization too. I recommend in the future you add decoration items, like pottery and house plants to give some more variety.
Valheim style is good. If you dont already know, try looking up a game called Unturned. It has same building system except the catalogue. It also has "Barricade" buildings that helps for customization and outdoor protection like fences etc.
Don’t know why this got recommended to me, but I’m glad it did. Beautiful game! I admire that you take your viewers through some of the processes. I look forward to following your development journey
Ah yes, the (also) Ark system. People in that game were stacking a lot of foundations at the same spot to be able to build thicker walls, which meant more time for other players to get inside their bases. I'd suggest letting people build floating foundations by snapping to an existing one, then calculate how many foundations would fit between it and the ground, consume that amount of foundation items, and stretch the structure towards the ground. That makes it so that foundations always look grounded. Don't know if it made any sense, but you could take inspiration from ark. It has a robust snapping system since it also made tree platforms and dinosaur platforms possible (basically big dinos had a platform you could put on them and have a mobile base) while also using the free-form placing system
I would also argue that please don't make it as similar because the different tiers of materials made it so that players would make a single-material structure because of the durability. More often than not, they'd build a big box. Although it happened primarily on public PVP servers
I think for this games style, going down the Valheim rout would be best. I am a huge builder in games, so the more materials and shapes to mix and match and build with the better! Along with lots of little things to fill it out, and build around it to better connect it to the surrounding land. Such as fences, rocks, and bushes. Seriously though, if you do end up taking this game all the way, don't doubt how much the little things will affect player builds. My favorite building system in a game would probably be Rising World. It has a blocky building system similar to Minecraft, but at 1/4th the size. It also has freeform construction elements such as planks and poles that you can reshape, resize, and change materials on. Letting you build with far more detail. You can create some unbelievable things with that system. The only downside is it takes a long time to make detailed builds (Personally I like that it takes time, it feel more rewarding) and it has a pretty big learning curve with all its controls and modularity. Personally I think some freeform basic elements to build with like that would be really nice on top of a Valheim like system. Its not necessary for casual players, but lets builders go crazy and add all the detail they want ontop of the basic system!
The progress of the game is looking really good. The snapping feature of the objects is very clever idea and allows for precession placement. Keep it up! :)

Game looks great! I always wanted to make something like this. I would love to play demo, and I have some things to propose. I would make the game as immersive as possible, it could be achieved by reducing UI elements to minimum (look the forest), I know that developing a game this way is very challenging. Also, I would stick to one perspective, first or third person.
I'm not so excited for the game release as the chance of it ever releasing is slim. That's how most of game devlogs go, it's just an experiment/learning experience for the developer. It's really fun to watch though, RUclips algorithym finally did something right. Subscribed, good luck on the game!

@@jcd9456 okay..... Well my point was that this game is great in it's current state, but I wouldn't think it would worth buying it in this state because besides the mechanics, the game doesn't really have any content - and by that I mean there's nothing but it's mechanics: no way to progress, nothing to unlock, nothing to lead you forward in the game, and a good but empty procedurally generated infinite world. My only complaint with rust/valheim style of building is that it's a bit too finicky to place multiple of the same things: You finished placing the floor, now you need to go through a menu to find the walls.. now you finished the walls, you need to go through another menu to find the stairs... Oh, forgot a wall or want to change the layout a bit? Another menu. Hey, late to the video but i have a suggestion that has really bugged me forever with minecraft, when you have building in a game like fortnite the buildings are more there to protect you as temporary building, rust you have them longer but its the same idea. But imo the publicity you gain from devlogs as a no-name indie developer far outweighs the tiny risk of someone copying you.
Most cases where I've really seen that happen is with people copying games that are already out and succesful. But at that point, does it really matter if they copy you?
@@GiantSlothGames yeah I agree with what you are saying. It does take a lot of effort. Thank you very much for the response and best wishes with your game
@@psycode5569 Thank you! You too :D
What are your PC specs?
Not super new: AMD Ryzen 7 3700x / GTX 1070 / 32GB 1600Mhz DDR4
Valheim has great system, but not many materials
I'm hoping to get some more variety in the final version of the game. The artstyle does make it pretty easy to add new content since I pretty much don't have to worry about texturing or unwrapping :D
pls let macOS players also play :D
Ugh, I wish Apple wouldn't have dropped OpenGL support :(
I'm going to look for alternatives though :D But this probably won't be until the full release I'm afraid.
@@GiantSlothGamesok :D
I don't explain that i love the artstyle of this game while i dislike lowpoly
