- Sunday afternoon drive to Wainuiomata and back, 13th Nov 1988.
Widening the road to four lanes had just been just completed, the final section being the foot of the Hutt Valley side.
End bonus: Passing Waterloo Station undergoing redevelopment - Cambridge Terrace drive by.
Wow! Great blast from the past, crazy to see it again without the walkjng path. I love that path and walk it most days. ❤
Spent many a summers day in the early 70s push biking over that hill to the Hutt, will never forget that beautiful aroma coming out of Griffins😋
Oh my gosh the Griffins smell was the best! ❤
wow there cant be much footage like this around of lower hutt back then.
The top had a great dual view of Wainuiomata and Petone ♥️
Cars really struggled to get up the hill back then.
Wow, I wasn't born in 1988, that was 34 years ago! Man, this video makes me view this place differently.
Walking over the hill certainly has changed since then!
I was one year old than, never thought I will be living in Wainuiomata ❤️
Wow no barrier down the middle
Wow manual from back in the day's
The cars🥰
Real history. 100k speed limit and no barriers.
One consistency is the road, everything else has changed
The widening of the road was done 10 years before this.
The widening project was ongoing for about ten years or more, with the Wainuiomata side and summit done quite early on. As far as I remember, the final section - the foot of the Hutt Valley side including Gracefield Rd on-ramp tunnel - was completed not long before the video date.

And thus dashcams were invented
I lived in Wainui-O-Mata in the very early 50s and 60s and be sure of one thing that was a way different road then had to drive round the outside of the hill not through the gaps also trees were all over the place on the sides on the Hutt side also.
In 1988, I was form 2 at wainuiomata college. Teacher was Mr. Knipkins. 46 now, 2022, living in porirua, but looking forward to moving back home.
Where the heart is.
#EFFORTBRINGSREWARD

Hi Peter - I'm quietly making a doco about a musician who grew up in Wellington in the 1980's. Would like to reach out to you to see if you have any footage of Wellington from around that time which you might be willing to allow use of. I'd post a link to my work so far but links are auto deleted from youtube comments. Let me know best way to get in touch? Many thanks....
Hi, No video camera until 1988, then mostly family and holidays away from home... To email me: mcgavinp at gmail.com
@@QuietNonDrinker Thanks Peter - email sent, check junk mail if you can't see anything from me.... cheers!
