  • Students at the University of Limerick who were involved in a street party in Castletroy last night could face expulsion, the Higher Education Minister says.
Simon Harris says the gathering was an "attack on the national effort" to suppress COVID-19.
Three men in their 20s were arrested over the incident, while over 50 fines have been issued for breaches of the Health Act.
One of the men has been charged for a public order offence, while a second was released without charge but fined.
The third man, who was arrested in relation to a drugs offence, remains in Garda custody.
University of Limerick President Kerstin Mey says any students found to have breached public health guidelines will face 'strong disciplinary measures'.
On Lunchtime Live, Minister Harris said the scenes were 'beyond unacceptable' and there has to be serious consequences.
He said: “This is an attack on our national effort.
"Anyone who goes out and breaks public health rules is actually trying to set us back as a country. It is utterly, utterly indefensible.
"Not too far away from those scenes in Limerick, there are patients fighting for their lives in University Hospital Limerick... there are nurses, doctors, healthcare assistants and others working around the clock to save lives.
"To say it was a kick in the gut or slap in the face to that work is probably an understatement."
Minister Harris said the incident is being taken "extremely seriously" by gardaí.
He has also spoken to the the UL president, and disciplinary action ‘up to and including’ expulsion will be examined for any students in breach of rules.
He said: “I don’t want to prejudice the process, but in my conversations with the [university] president… that’s absolutely the intention of the university.”
However, the minister said it's important not to tar all students with the same brush, as most have 'sacrificed a hell of a lot' and are following the guidelines.
He said it's other students who feel 'desperately let down' by what happened in Limerick last night.

Partying sets us back as a country and fines were issued. When will those involved in golfgate, rtegate and gardagate be affected? Is the dail bar in breach of public health regulations?

Imagine even considering expelling someone from a third level university for simply “partying”. Spoken like a true dictator. This man is dangerous to even have such thought processes.

200 Muslims filmed coming out of a mosque in Dublin last weekend. Gardai were called but never showed up. Different strokes for different folks. The New Irish are above the law it seems.

I'm so sick of weasel politicians finger wagging from the sidelines, after 10+ years of not being able to build a children's hospital, why is this guy still employed?!?

Getting sick of this rhetoric now. We're clearly far from in this together. There's no national effort. What are these people on about? Andrea, did you go to college? I bet you partied didn't you? Would you have lasted over a year without socializing and feeling like a normal 20 year old? How about grilling the government for letting these variants in, supplying big business with cheap foreign labour. Disgraceful journalism.

What a political overreach. Expel them from university? They committed an offence, they were fined, that should be the end of it. People commit offences that endanger other people's health all the time - speeding, drink driving, dangerous driving... How about the guards inform your employer next time you get caught speeding? Perhaps your mortgage company? Perhaps your medical insurer? Where do we draw the line that limits state interference in people's lives?

People are done listening. No end in sight. Nothing to look forward to. Missing out on years of our prime that we will never get back. No wonder most of these students will get their degree and get the hell out of this country. Slan.

These Students knew fully what they were doing- the problem is one of discipline amongst the youth in general - they booze up when it suits them and one wonders where do they get the money to sustain this lifestyle - Mammies and Daddies should investigate their Johnnies and Mary's and take away their pocket money if they find out that they were involved in this anti-covid fashion statement. Throw them out or take their higher education grant off them.
