89-91 Patton is gold made into voice. A really unique moment of his singing carreer. I wish they were more albums featuring that kind of voice besides The Real Thing album and Mr Bungle's self titled & demos.
Oddly enough, I'd always done my Mike Patton Karaoke voice with a very nasal style and it worked alright but it just wasnt correct...then one day I thought I'd check for a vocals only version of Epic, and holy shit... It turns out he isnt singing through his nose to make that tone. He is doing it in the back of his throat in a way similar to Bradley from Sublime, you just can't hear it with the rest of the music playing. Look up Epic -Vocals isolated And listen to the chorus, specifically, "CAN'T GRAB IT" he is actually singing those notes like a soul singer, like James Brown maybe. Anyway, I just found that the vocal isolation videos found on here changed how I looked at Mike Patton's singing and now I understand what he is doing. Brilliant stuff.
He stopped doing it because he not only knew he was capable of so much more, but he also didn't want to get trapped as that kind of singer. Personally, I'm glad he ditched it.
46 and I still rock this haircut and listen to FNM!!! I used to have a low rider truck and while others were listening to bass music I was jamming out to this thinking I was so cool. Come to think about it, I was cool:)
Damn man. I wish I could have experienced the early 90s like you guys. I am only 27 but these guys were introduced to me by my dad along with Alice in Chains, Tool, and Mr. Bungle. More of a death metal guy myself but these are my roots in music and they are the best. Patton is GOAT.
unfortunately they couldn't keep everyone in the band. Starting with Chuck Mosely, people kept on splitting. Damn shame, because it really affected their output, and overall quality from 92-on.
Patton doesn't even have to try, he's just beast. Faith No More is one of the most influential bands of the last 30+ years. Mixing metal, funk, jazz, hip-hop, lounge, country....etc. Name a band today, they probably listened to FNM. Hall of Fame???
Beyond historic song and performance. The song is about a divine or spiritual experience. Mike patton is killing it here, and here is the kicker.. he doesnt even have to try hard to hit these insane notes..
@Magister Ludi 'Hard' is relative. They're not hard notes for Mike, but most male singers would struggle to hit the high notes in this song. The male singers who could sing the high parts with ease wouldn't be able to reach the low notes in the song.
At 47 years old, I finally got to see Mike Patton live last week...Amazing how he's still on top of his game...The greatest and most versatile vocalists of all time
One of the Best Bands in Rock History. Mike's Vocal abilities here are UNREAL. The Audio does it no justice but, for those of us that have experienced FNM Live? We know what time it is. Saw them in early 1992 in Los Angeles (among many other times) at the Hollywood Palladium in Support of their Angel Dust Record Release, one of the most incredible live performances I have ever seen. Blew us all away.
God what a babe he was when young; so beautiful in appearance and his vocals are so fucking amazing- his range was used more later on but I still like this nasal voice too. The bad boy crazy showman I so love! Wish I could be like that! Not give a shit and just be your crazy self. I really appreciate his versatile vocals over his long amazing career

One of my all time favorite songs. Mike Patton is a force of nature.

100% agree! This right here is my favourite Patton. Have you listened to Mr Nice Guy, by Mr Bungle?
I would add 1992. Saw Angel Dust Tour in 92 in SF and it was mind blowing.
Couldn't agree more

Mike Bordin is a machine. Love it.
Without doubt one of the best drummers ever. Monster
Playing left-handed with drums set-up as righty.
Mee too
Agreed!

It's their War Pigs. An 8 minute journey
I did it for an entire month-long bicycle tour down the Baja. 😅t never gets old. Possibly the most meaningful and beautiful song I’ve ever heard.
The nod at the end 8:13 to Public Enemy's "911 is a Joke" is riggidy-righteous!
Yeah, I had a few tracks I listened to by PE back then so this just shows they know good music on top of making it.
There was no weak link in this band. And they managed- despite having different musical influences,- to flawlessly weave it all together.
unfortunately they couldn't keep everyone in the band. Starting with Chuck Mosely, people kept on splitting. Damn shame, because it really affected their output, and overall quality from 92-on.

Mike Patton so,so underrated and so Faith No More.
My favorite performance of my favorite FNM song. There was literally nothing else like them; nor, as it seems, will there ever be.

I know the feeling
It is the real thing
The essence of the truth
The perfect moment
That golden moment
I know you feel it too
I know the feeling
It is the real thing
You can't refuse the embrace
No
It's like the pattern below the skin
You gotta reach out and pull it all in
And you feel like you're too close
But you swallow another dose
The pinnacle of happiness
Filling up your soul
You don't think you can take any more
You never wanna let go
To touch the roots of experience
The most basic ingredients
To see the unseen glitter of life
And feel the dirt, grief, anger and strife
Cherish the certainly of now
It kills you a bit at a time
Cradle the inspiration
It will leave you writhing on the floor
This is so unreal, what I feel
This nourishment, life is bent
Into a shape I can hold
A twist of fate, all my own
Just grit your teeth, make no sound
Take a step away and look around
Just clench your fist and close your eyes
Look deep inside, hypnotize
The whisper is but a shout
That's what it is all about
Yes, the ecstasy, you can pray
You will never let it slip away
Like the sacred song that someone sings through you, through you
Like the flesh so warm that the thorn sticks into, into
Like the dream you know one day will come to life
Try to hold on just a little longer, stronger, stronger
It's the jewel of victory
The chasm of misery
And once you have bitten the core
You will always know the flavor
The split second of divinity
You drink up the sky
All of heaven is in your arms
You know the reason why
It's right there, all by itself
And what you are, there is nothing else
You're growing a life within a life
The lips of wonder kiss you inside
And when it's over the feeling remains
It all comes down to this
The smoke clears, I see what it is
That made me feel this way
I know the feeling
It is the real thing
The essence of the truth
The perfect moment
That golden moment
I know you feel it too
I know the feeling
It is the real thing
You can't refuse the embrace
This is so unreal, what I feel
Flood, sell your soul, feel the blood
Pump through your veins, can't explain
The element that's everything
Just clench your fist and close your eyes
Look deep inside, hypnotize
Yes, the ecstasy, you can pray
You will never let it slip away
Yes, the ecstasy, you can pray
You will never let it slip away
You will never let it slip away
You will never let it slip away
Like the echoes of your childhood laughter, ever after
Like the first time love urged you to take it's guidance, in silence
Like your heartbeat when you realize you're dying, but you're trying
Like the way you cry for a happy ending, ending
