I enjoy your honest and fair coverage of the team without resorting to hot takes or click bait material. Your integrity and empathy is refreshing and something lacking in the media, social media and the world in general.
You're a great example to your peers, and (in-turn) earned you tremendous respect (professionally ergo personally). I expect players KNOW what they can & can't say to you with 💯 confidence.
This is great content Matt, its always interesting to get your insights on the game but you have so much knowledge as a sports journalists its great to get your thoughts and approach. Keep it going, we'll keep watching!
Hi Matt, each of us can learn from you on how to become a better person. I have been guilty of having mean spirit and your video on this topic is a learning moment. Thanks.
Thank you for sharing your values with us, Matt. They are clearly reflected in your reporting. Your longevity in this arena speaks for itself. You will continue to provide fair and professional coverage long after the toxic clickbait clowns are dispensed down the collective toilet of their destiny.
I very much enjoyed this type of content and would love to see more. Been following you and Barrows for my 49ers coverage for years and always appreciate your professionalism.
Thank you for sharing your insight Matt. Your sincerity and professionalism is obvious but hearing you speak to it directly is really refreshing. Especially in today’s media driven world. Thank you for giving us fans an inside glimpse and reminder that we’re all more than just a 2D version!😊
cute thank you Matt for being a thorough and honest man that has respect for each and every human being. That’s hard to find these days. It’s truly a blessing to know you 🙏🏾👍🏽🥰😊
I'm a 9er fan in Leeds, England Matt and I really enjoy your content. There is a reason the organisation has great respect for you. Some of your "colleagues" could do with taking a leaf out of your professionalism. Keep up the great work.
@mattmaiocconfl IHi Matt. I'm a 49ers fan since the 1980s. Roger Craig was my inspiration to being a 9er. However I'm not a Leeds Utd fan and it pains me that they bought the club lol. Of all the clubs to buy they chose that one haha
Big props for these insights. I appreciate the combination of empathy and professionalism that you talk about here and why it’s so important, especially with such recent tragic news. We never really know what’s going on with folks, and having a bit of grace never ends up hurting. As a journalist, you have responsibilities to tell the truth and give accurate information, but as a fan, I have always felt my only responsibility is to give my support to my team and the players on it. Thanks for doing what you do and helping us know more about something we care about!
I've been late a few times just to make sure there is not more context that I need to know before saying or writing something. I never have regrets when I do that.
As the author of that Mooney Ward overreaction I'll admit it did NOT age well. My apologies to the Faithful community & to the Ward family. I have the utmost sympathy & compassion for their situation. My heart goes out to them all. Sending mine 🙏.
Hey, you were not alone. I was going to respond to that reaction until we all learned the horrible news. My point was that we can never know what people are going through off the field and how it might affect them on the field.
Matt! I think this is your best podcast! Thanks for sharing your HEART! All the way out here in Tn Im a huge 9ers fan! You make being a Niners even more fun! It’s obvious from all your podcasts but especially this episode how special you are! Like me, I bet a lot of the FAITHFUL consider you as a friend! Hope to meet you one of these days. Keep being yourself!
Matt, thank you for taking the time to share your feelings. Empathy, professionalism, and a greater perspective are things we all should try to be better with. Goes without saying, all of our hearts go out to Mooney and his family. With that I was wondering if you could help the fans get a better understanding of the behind the scenes the support staff for the team is facing. I'm a bit curious if there's been a change in the medical staff's approach given that Ben Peterson left. Be interesting to hear if those kinds of changes affect the players especially with all of the injuries the team has had this year. Thanks again
Thank you for the comment. As for your question, it's impossible to know. But I look around the NFL, and every team is dealing with injuries -- and, it seems, injuries to big-time players. I think it's a function of playing becoming bigger, faster and stronger every year with bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments remaining the same.
I think as reporters it's ok to report on the information you have, as you said as long as it's fair and accurate. I also think those "reporters" like Grant Cohn who constantly tries to paint a narrative to sew chaos, should stop doing that nonsense. For example when Kyle was talking to Purdy, David Lombardi tweeted something like "Kyle spoke to Brock Purdy for about 5 minutes." Meanwhile egghead Grant Cohn from the same exact thing says "Kyle is lecturing Brock Purdy. Never seen this before." Thankfully Matt you're one of the good ones and why I enjoy following you here and watching your videos. As well as JLC.
Appreciate the insight and especially how you are NOT trying to get clicks by exploiting the sad news as I have seen from other niner "content creators".
I learned a long time ago how to remove myself from the emotions of a game by simply focusing on my job -- analyzing, writing and talking about the game -- regardless of the outcome. That said, if the 49ers win another Super Bowl, I would unquestionably feel good for those in the organization I know and respect. I can guaranteed you if the 49ers had won 2012 (Feb. 2013), for instance, I would've felt very good for Gore, Staley, Willis and many others. I don't feel any less professional for saying that.
Turns out decency and professionalism are still a thing. 😊 Yes to more story time with Matt. How about some background on how you got into the field of sports reporting and your career progression.
Thanks Matt. It is an extremely professional measured response of reporting. I generally think you speak on behalf of the team and not the fans, and for that reason alone you must conduct yourself accordingly. Yes these are players and families and lives are affected, but they are also extremely highly paid professional athletes for a billion dollar corporations with certain standards in place. I'll give a comparison. Your general surgeon doesn't even make near what Brock Purdy makes. If he makes a mistake someone dies and he is at risk of being suied, losing his license and his ability to provide for his family. There isn't a single person on planet earth including print/jounralism media empathetic for the doctor and whatever they might be going through. Anywyas, feel terrible for Mooney. It's why I left the Children's Hospital. Got sick of seeing children/babies die.
I heard that the job of journalists is to hold the coach, GM and owner accountable! 😂 We are told every day that they should all be fired because their SB window is closed.
I know Jim Trotter. I know that he said his column was "watered down." Without knowing exactly what he originally wrote and how it ended up, I really cannot express an informed opinion. My initial thought is that The Athletic hired Jim for his opinions, and if they did anything to silence those opinions, that's not good.
“This is one of the most atrocious performances we’ve seen from a baseball player … in postseason history.” Stephen A Smith quote on Aaron Judge. Warranted? Or going too far? So maybe Judge is going through something deeply personal that we don't know about? But does that mean all sports stars and celebrities and any well known public figures should be immune off limits to scrutiny? Life sucks and prayers go out to the Ward family....but we all have suffered some form of personal tragedies....some more than others. But where are the lines drawn when it comes to legitimate criticisms and holding people accountable? I don't think it's ever easy to distinguish.
As I said, fair, honest and accurate. It's also in keeping with character, so it probably does not hit as hard when somebody who has hot take after hot take says something dramatic. Right?
@mattmaiocconfl yes I acknowledge that....but everyone sees things differently. I just wonder if beat writers knew Ward had a heavy home situation with a Down Syndrome baby, whether or not they would have cut him some slack regarding his less than stellar play?
I think Matt has secretly sided with Lombardi. I swear almost every time I listen to him now, he's subliminally talking about things Grant Ryan Coach and Jesse talked about earlier and disputing them. It wont ever make me stop listening to Matt but it just seems really interesting. Maybe im right, maybe im wrong, maybe its just coincidence?!? 🤷🏾♂️
The way you guys talk about Grant vs Lombardi is the Trump be Harris. He’s not picking sides and I’m sure he likes both David and Grant. Grants dad Lowell said yesterday that him and Matt are close friends so I’m sure that he doesn’t hate Grant
I don't know what this comment is in reference to, but I can say that this particular video was inspired by Chris who asked that I do more "timeless" content on my process. And I've been thinking a lot about things after learning of the tragedy of Charvarius Ward's daughter and the human side of our jobs.
@masonwright429 I know almost everything Lowell has said about how great of a person and professional Matt is bro...I always tune in when he and Matt speaks. As I said..."SEEMS". The reason I said it was because of the comments that SEEM connected and the timing of said comments.
@mattmaiocconfl Maybe im wrong, as I said. It just seems that way sometimes, maybe because of the timing. As I said, it wouldn't make me stop watching and listening to you because i know the accuracy and truthfulness in your reporting. It's just a lot has been going on with our team, and there seems to be a lot of contradictory/vindictive reporting between the folks who we depend on to keep us fans in the know and engaged with what's actually going on with the team we love. So, it gets a little exasperating and frustrating sometimes, but if I'm wrong, I apologize! I just wish Lombardi and Grant and his crew could agree to disagree and not take shots at each other so much. Inside the noise is where a lot of the information gets lost for some of us, especially if it seems like shots are being taken at other more than is necessary. Hopefully, my rambling made some sense. I'm sure we all are praying for Gods healing/understanding for Charvarius and his family!! I wish to never know that feeling!! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 Ps... I'm glad we have people like you keeping us informed and taking us behind the scenes as much as possible!!
Matt You Do things the right way. No click Bait, No favoritism. This is why your trusted by the organization
Thank you for watching.
He is a class act he has the most fair and accurate coverage.
Thank you.
I enjoy your honest and fair coverage of the team without resorting to hot takes or click bait material. Your integrity and empathy is refreshing and something lacking in the media, social media and the world in general.
I'm not perfect, by any means. But I'm beyond the point where I feel the need to be something I'm not for the purpose of generating clicks.
You're a great example to your peers, and (in-turn) earned you tremendous respect (professionally ergo personally). I expect players KNOW what they can & can't say to you with 💯 confidence.
You're a class act, Matt.
Thank you for watching and supporting.
I appreciate your honesty and integrity. I’m sure the players and organization recognize and appreciate those qualities as well.
This is great content Matt, its always interesting to get your insights on the game but you have so much knowledge as a sports journalists its great to get your thoughts and approach. Keep it going, we'll keep watching!
I appreciate that!
Hi Matt, each of us can learn from you on how to become a better person. I have been guilty of having mean spirit and your video on this topic is a learning moment. Thanks.
Thank you, but I would not go that far. I've done things I regret, but I now try to take a step back and make sure I have things buttoned up.
Thank you for sharing your values with us, Matt. They are clearly reflected in your reporting. Your longevity in this arena speaks for itself. You will continue to provide fair and professional coverage long after the toxic clickbait clowns are dispensed down the collective toilet of their destiny.
Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
I very much enjoyed this type of content and would love to see more. Been following you and Barrows for my 49ers coverage for years and always appreciate your professionalism.
That's great. Thank you.
Thanks Matt for your coverage... As many know and mention you keep the Niner faithful informed without bias. We love and appreciate that. Thank you!
Thank you for the kind words.

@riichardstockdale780 A 49ers fans in Leeds? Were you a 49ers fan before the organization acquired Leeds United? And how is this season looking?
@mattmaiocconfl IHi Matt. I'm a 49ers fan since the 1980s. Roger Craig was my inspiration to being a 9er. However I'm not a Leeds Utd fan and it pains me that they bought the club lol. Of all the clubs to buy they chose that one haha

Awesome. Thank you. Glad you liked it.

Great video Matt!
Thank you for watching.

This is Matt's way of saying that deep down inside, he'd love to see the 49ers players win the Super Bowl, without having to say he's a 49er fan. 😉
I learned a long time ago how to remove myself from the emotions of a game by simply focusing on my job -- analyzing, writing and talking about the game -- regardless of the outcome. Matt - comments on the Athletic squashing a story about Nick Bossa?
I know Jim Trotter. I know that he said his column was "watered down." Without knowing exactly what he originally wrote and how it ended up, I really cannot express an informed opinion. My initial thought is that The Athletic hired Jim for his opinions, and if they did anything to silence those opinions, that's not good.
I take it you and Grant Cohn didn’t attend the same journalism school.
