Ahhh, bottom feeders with their own compartment at the bottom of the tank, with screen big enough to let food through, that's awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Excellent video! Planning my first back yard system and this will save me a lot of trial and error. I have a few questions please: 1) What is the barrier config separating molting/non-molting (are molted smaller and squeeze into a smaller screen sector)? 2) Where do the crayfish stay and why a blend of two crusty bottom feeders? 3) Do you breed the prawns too? Is there a nursery for the female prawns?
Jason I am sure we will do a video on them this fall. We don't harvest a lot they are part of the cleaning crew. They are a freshwater shrimp they have a little different flavor then the saltwater but they are pretty good. Building a system here in a few weeks it will have freshwater lobster. Thanks for watching
All Top Shelf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1 of top 2 or 3 setups I've found in my non stop search. Prettiest under water photograpy, now looking to find similar with crawfish.
PRAHHNS. Love your accent,... but I have never heard them called Prones. Your video gave me some good ideas. Thanks...now I know what to do with that pond thing I got ages ago.
Well done! Nice design for the pond set up. We are starting year 3 on our small system in Nova Scotia... a bit harder to grow harvest fish without investing in a year round pond heating system but we are looking at it for next year.
Very well presented. As I look at the netting support structure, I see enough surface area of the pipe to be useful in temperature management of the pool. Not TOO much, but perhaps enough. I live where it is a little cold in the winter and would need some, but not a lot of heat for the pool for 3 months or so.
Great video. Do you have a video or other information regarding the tanks you use? I'd like to do in-ground tanks inside a green house with with grow trays above them.
Try adding some scuds to the system AKA Gammarus shrimp. They help keep my redclaw crayfish system going and can handle off the chart nitro spikes when a new system is cycling.
You have a very nice set up there. I am planing on building a 3000 gallon pond and raising about 100 Tilapia and about 10 catfish. I have searched over the internet to see what I could find on what they require the best answer I could find is 2sq ft of bottom area to a shrimp. I love the size of your set up I was wondering what works for you?
Adult prawns need about 2 sq feet per animal but they need a place to molt the old shell as they grow that is when other prawns will move in for the kill
You say you just give them space? Don't you need rocks or hiding spots for them to stay safe while they mulch? Also you said you used side rails to develop a tight holding for the mesh screen right. I know it's to separate prawns from fish but you managed to design it to be a tight fiting all around?
Well done. Not sure fresh water prawns are available here, 25 mins north of ATL. Have seen tilapia for sale, but not sure about making it thru the winter.
Hi, what other creatures could you put in with your fish, albeit separated, which would clean the bottom of the tank. Also, Talapia prefer warm water, and I am going to use Rainbow Trout because they prefer cold water which is easier in my climate. So my tank cleaning critters would also have to thrive in those cold temperatures. Thanks. Good video, everything well explained.
would it be practical / useful to introduce freshwater mussels as cleaners?I imagine them in a tank after the fish, perhaps on a base of sand that the water would be drawn through as a further biological filter
That would depend greatly on your climate. If where you live your pond waters fall below the fish's survivable temps for more than one month it would not be economical to attempt to heat an outdoor exposed pond. The only examples I know where this is ever done was an emergency save measure for a geothermal naturally heated koi pond in unusually low temps for that keepers area (watch Greenpower Science Solar Thermal Geothermal large pond heating with giant Koi Fish). There are DIY rocket stove water heaters you can build, one is an open loop system that you have to consider the problem of overheating the water or scalding fish that swim too close to the outlet, and there's a closed loop system that you have to worry about venting the radiators and risk of explosion. It too may not be economical or feasible depending on how hard your winter freezes are and how long they can possibly last. Remember outdoor heated water also evaporates quickly in the winter, you would have to find a way to preheated refill water. For extreme winter weather you could build a building or greenhouse around the system and heat the building with your most economical system for your area, ie: woodstove. This way would reduce the evaporation. You will still need to consider preheating water for any topping off and partial or full water changes in your system. You will also want to ensure that your structure can handle snow loads without collapsing. If your soil freeze line is more than half as deep as your pond depth, you would be better off keeping your pond above ground because your heating efforts would be fighting the lateral travel of cold transferring into your pond, unless you have a very good insulated build for the walls of the pond. Above ground in a heating building would be the less costly way to go in terms of building costs. If your temps are mild and you don't have heavy snow worries, you could get away with building a hoophouse cover over your inground pond and let the sun help heat it in addition to your heat source for those cloudy days. Warm air does not want to go down into water easily, circulation to the surface is essential.
If you will bait the camera with a little of what the prawns eat readily, they will come right up to and around the camera lens. Nice informative videos.
Very Cool! How much work/time do you spend each day once your system is in full swing? Also, what would be an approximate start-up cost for a 3 tote system, and how much water would you need per month/week? I have a well so this is a consideration for me. Thanks
Virginia Patton Cost can be little or as much as you want to spend it all depends on what you want. I spend about 5 mins per day in the greenhouse and one day a week I spend about 1 hour
They love the netting please understand they had no settled we just released the day we did the video. No the food don't go to the bottom its only .25 or 1/4 inch netting. Lattice is to large of holes for when they are small
like your pond, I got a hole in the back yard. This is what I need to do with it. However, I will have to put a screen or fence over the top. we have a lot of cats in the neighbor. been trying to catch them. What do I put down in bottom to whole the water in?
Ok well I have many questions. How many channel Catfish can I raise in 3 320 Gallon IBC tanks in a greenhouse. We will be using the water to supply our Kratki floating raft beds as well as our vertical zip tie grow walls we chose Channel Catfish as I'm really not a fish lover but my mother in law finally taught me to like her fried catfish so I talked the wife into adding them in the back end of our new 10' x 45' greenhouse. The good lord has been providing us with materials and supplies that I thought we'd never be able to afford so He just dropped the stuff in our laps for free and greatly reduced prices. 2 week ends ago a add on Craigs list for just 2 hrs. found us with all the corrugated metal siding we needed. and then this pass week end we ran across a local contractor who has a scrap pile and dead stock pile that will be mostly coming home with us for the ridicules price of hauling it home Thank you Lord! We got 6 heavy aluminum louvered windows, several pallets of assorted brick, some aluminum scaffolding panels, and all the rest of the fiberglass roof window panels we should need, a couple lengths of roof gutter we can use to add a trough bag / soil grow system. To good to be expected but he made it happen for us. WOW! any advice will be greatly appreciated. I've watched this video several times and will be after the wife to let me add the craw fish as I herd they make good catfish food.
Do you have a recommended source for crayfish or shrimp? Also could I use a hot tub without the motor I am thinking because of the heater during the winter or not? Would it keep fish and shrimp?
actually ours is big and seats 6-8 and does have some floor space if I had water between the wall of hot tub then the liner and then water would I be able to run the heater?
No we have had no problems but people can see in our greenhouse and we have no grow light systems going. Plus I live in a small town and most of the town has been here and seen my system lol.
Ahhh, bottom feeders with their own compartment at the bottom of the tank, with screen big enough to let food through, that's awesome! Thanks for sharing!
I like that screen sytem you built to separate the prawns. Very simple and functional design.
Thank you
Gotta say !!! _ The camera probe was a real nice touch I haven't seen on any other video.
I'd like to see a video on the harvesting of the prawns. New animal to me.
Excellent video! Planning my first back yard system and this will save me a lot of trial and error. I have a few questions please:
1) What is the barrier config separating molting/non-molting (are molted smaller and squeeze into a smaller screen sector)?
2) Where do the crayfish stay and why a blend of two crusty bottom feeders?
3) Do you breed the prawns too? Is there a nursery for the female prawns?
Great! Quite ingenuous way to build an artificial habitat that can simulate the natural. Thanks for sharing.
Jason I am sure we will do a video on them this fall. We don't harvest a lot they are part of the cleaning crew. They are a freshwater shrimp they have a little different flavor then the saltwater but they are pretty good. Building a system here in a few weeks it will have freshwater lobster.

Spectacular video!! I loved the underwater camera!

PRAHHNS. Love your accent,... but I have never heard them called Prones.
Your video gave me some good ideas. Thanks...now I know what to do with that pond thing I got ages ago.
Thank you am from the south!
IM GONNA BULID IT!
about all fish work I have catfish, koi, trout, crayfish and prawns
Nice system and some awesome underwater footage.
Love the way you say "prawns"
Thanks Crayfish would help some with cleaning the bottom I have a few in one of my systems they do ok but not as good as the prawns.
Well done! Nice design for the pond set up. We are starting year 3 on our small system in Nova Scotia... a bit harder to grow harvest fish without investing in a year round pond heating system but we are looking at it for next year.
brandie Lavoie I would recommend a cover for the pond in colder climate
Jon Baker I have a video of a solar heater I built for my ponds
Great setup you have there! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you
Very cool system. Them prawns are curious little fellers
Very well presented. As I look at the netting support structure, I see enough surface area of the pipe to be useful in temperature management of the pool. Not TOO much, but perhaps enough. I live where it is a little cold in the winter and would need some, but not a lot of heat for the pool for 3 months or so.
Holy fish crap, Batman! Best vid on aquaponics EVER!!!
SO WHAT DO YOU FEED THE FISH AND WHERE DO YOU GET THE FRESH WATER PRAWNS AND TILIPIA TO PUT IN THIS SYSTEM?
Great video. Do you have a video or other information regarding the tanks you use? I'd like to do in-ground tanks inside a green house with with grow trays above them.
In my small greenhouse I use IBC tanks the pond is a hole with a pond liner
How ingenious! Thanks so much for posting this.
great video, nice underwater visual aid to understand the system. Very nice...
How do you deal with the water once it's used up? is it harmful to the ground?
Great video, thanks a lot
cool video have you though of adding gravel to the bottom and pipes and niches for the prawns to hide?
Try adding some scuds to the system AKA Gammarus shrimp. They help keep my redclaw crayfish system going and can handle off the chart nitro spikes when a new system is cycling.
I keep prawns alive in the winter and I am in North Carolina.
Like it. The prawns like the camera. I guess the are now prawn stars;-)
Great system and video. Where do you get your baby shrimp/prawns from?
Grow Dinner Aquaponics we are a hatchery
Would you ship to NYC?
Yes we ship shrimp in the spring
Thank you Sam I have some mud bugs in my system they work good but I have them in my duckweed and sub tanks
I have a prawn nursery and have them for sale each spring
Great job! Awesome video and system. Thanks for posting !
nice thank you. hard to tell if those prawns are actually getting up in the layers?
have you thought about putting freshwater mussels ? also how do you spawn more? freshwater prawns
The mussels I don't think would clean as good as the prawns. The gravel grow beds are our filter
Thank you and yes they are big prawn stars I will be sure to use a star plate when I am having them for dinner one night lol
Can you suggest any books or instructional materials for someone looking to start a similar system?
What species of prawn do you have in this setup?
Good one and informative. It is a lot worth growing Prawns/Shrimps than Tilapia in terms of economic value.
I will try to build this one. I love tilapia, prawns/shrimps. I just need to find where to get the equipments.
Great work here!
Lot's of great information. Thanks for sharing.
Its a loop system the water is never used up. You are very welcome
Very Nice! The prawns seem like they would add yet another layer of goodness! Do catfish work in such a system?
this is an awesome set up!

Erik Maguina Yes it is a tight fit.
You need an HD GoPro for those underwater shots and to get a sharper picture. It would be awesome to see the system in high def. Thanks for sharing!
amazing footage
Well done.
Not sure fresh water prawns are available here, 25 mins north of ATL.
Have seen tilapia for sale, but not sure about making it thru the winter.
I just use the diy solar that is other video for warming my ponds
Harvest prawns with a net and yes we have crayfish in our systems
I do in some of my tanks but the neting works best for me in the ponds
Nice vid, but did the prawns start as eggs or already matured from somewhere?
Hi. I just watched your video and I realized that your setup is not covered. What effect does rain have on your system?
+Gerty Hattingh It lowers the pH that is the only problem with having outdoor systems.
Hi, what other creatures could you put in with your fish, albeit separated, which would clean the bottom of the tank. Also, Talapia prefer warm water, and I am going to use Rainbow Trout because they prefer cold water which is easier in my climate. I have some of them in a different system. The prawns will not fight has bad with bird netting
Interesting and funny....very interesting the set up.
Thats awesome!!! Great ideas. Do you have any tips on controlling ph levels in a natural manner without sacrificing plant quaity? Thanks in advance.
This a video thats shows what I use on a new system setup How to lower and raise pH in aquaponics systems
would it be practical / useful to introduce freshwater mussels as cleaners?I imagine them in a tank after the fish, perhaps on a base of sand that the water would be drawn through as a further biological filter

This is a summer pond we harvest before winter
Great video. Its very informative. Thanks
Do you have a brand of bird netting that works best for you?
Thank you Bob
You are very welcome thanks for watching
If you will bait the camera with a little of what the prawns eat readily, they will come right up to and around the camera lens. Nice informative videos.
Curious how you made the drainage from your beds to your main fish pond. I can think of ways but I wonder how it could affect the siphon.
Very Cool! How much work/time do you spend each day once your system is in full swing? Also, what would be an approximate start-up cost for a 3 tote system, and how much water would you need per month/week? I have a well so this is a consideration for me.

We have a prawn nursery and sale prawns in the spring
Have you tried red claw crayfish? Also how do you harvest the prawns?

Great vid! Thanks!
Patriot John Adams Thank you
fish looks really healthy
It is easy to build an aquaponics system from home, whether it is indoors or outside in the backyard.
Would it work to put them in the sump tank? If so what kind and where you get them and what would you feed them?
Thanks and I have a prawn nursery
did the prawns work out?
Ok well I have many questions. How many channel Catfish can I raise in 3 320 Gallon IBC tanks in a greenhouse. Thanks a lot man, awesome video.
That is what the netting is for.
what would you use if it were not tilapia? cause in Utah tilapia are treated like a controlled substance?
Mussels would work fine I would think but at the same time I don't think they will clean the system like freshwater prawns will.
I have a few crayfish in my system. Harvest catch and eat
Thanks
Nice set up. :)
Thank you
Are talapia in the chiclid family of fish. They sure look like the african chiclids I used to have in my aquarium years ago.
Do you have a recommended source for crayfish or shrimp? Also could I use a hot tub without the motor I am thinking because of the heater during the winter or not? Would it keep fish and shrimp?
Recycled hot tubs work ok for fish but not the best for the prawns because the like floor space and most tubs don't have floor space
Grow Dinner Aquaponics What about an IBC? Additionall, what are the dimensions of you fish tank?
actually ours is big and seats 6-8 and does have some floor space if I had water between the wall of hot tub then the liner and then water would I be able to run the heater?
What's the exact name of that shrimps? Thanks!
Blue claw giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii)
Grow Dinner Aquaponics
thanks man ;)
Cool info and thanks for sharing this
Sam I have crayfish in my system they are easy
I have a prawn nursery and have then for sale each spring
No we have had no problems but people can see in our greenhouse and we have no grow light systems going. Plus I live in a small town and most of the town has been here and seen my system lol.
Its just like Prawn Big Brother.
Did you use a concrete tank? Is there anything special about it?
Thank you
