Aquaponics is really the wave of the future. Everyone could have fresh, organic vegetables and fish growing in their back yard. Fascinating! Thank you for the video.
I'm sold on this idea. I am amazed at the ingenuity that went into designing and constructing such a system. I plan to learn more and when I can, make it a reality for myself. What a way to feed families and people with minimal space to do so. Bravo!
Yes, folk who do Aquaponics make sure the containers used are the very best available for the very reason you have raised. My personal preference is marine grade fibreglass. It is inert when cured and lasts a lifetime. The move toward sustainability is a journey and we are always striving to do the very best we can with what we have available to us. Aquaponics is a giant leap forward in securing food purity for families who are health concious. Thanks for raising this issue.
Just saw all your 3 DVDs. Really a fantastic job you've done. I can honestly say that you haven't left anything out, no detail not covered. Thanks a 1,000,000
absolutely amazing, I'm thinking about a herb garden, this however gave me an idea for some serious plants. Amazing how we are all led to believe that spraying and chemistry is the best solution, meanwhile, the best solution for sustainable food supply is staring right at us with this solution.
So very true Amokvrs. Aquaponics is an ECO system, pure and simple. That is it's beauty. That is where the similarity to Hydroponics and Aquaculture takes a large divergence. Aquaponics relies on natural processes just like a really well found Permaculture garden that relies on all the bacteria, fungi and myriads of critters to make it all work.
Thank you so much for spreading this awsome info I use to never think that thinigs like this would work because of the way that I was tought to think about food. now that my views on food have changed I think systems like these are awesome. And I for one would love to see more tax payers dollars going on to programs and systems like these because when every thing get used there is no waste. Love peace and blessing from Los Angeles California BUCKY.
Jade Perch...an amazing Australian native fish that has four times more Omega 3 than any other fish on the planet. Tastes good too, especially steamed or smoked.
Trying to keep it simple in regard to formula , but strictly speaking it is really about the amount of fish food put into the system, not the number of fish.
there are passive solar designs that work great to keep temperatures high enough to keep cold water fish going. Methane gas harvesting off compost could be used for a heater, there are options, but, cold water fish are going to be an important factor.
Great, I was wondering why do you use a syphon to drain the whole bed when its full and then fill it again in a cycle like that? I have seen systems that continuously flow water over their plants and they have a timer set to have set times for running for example they might have it run for an hour and then cut it off for 2. This may be better if it works the same as i would like to time it as i plan on using solar to power the pumps.
how are there zero comments? he has this like a flood and drain type system. Thinking about this, you could do this on a permaculture set up, small ponds surrounded by flora and fauna should work just as well, the pond will also work well for irrigation. 6:30 he talked about that, and true, for and urban setting you have to be more creative if you didn't want tanks. compost and thing like aitpots/smartpots could work for root crops in this system.
Very interesting. But, instead of use media bed volume in relation to fish tank volume, it would´t be prefereble to use media bed volume in relation to fish biomass in the tank?
i need help i have a nice 55 gallon fish tank an im looking to set up an aquaponics system but im looking to grow some more smokable vegetables but i need help understanding the chemical balance for the plants, because it just doesnt seem fathomable for plant chemicals to mix with my fish chemicals? wont the fish chemicals mess with the vegetables?
Good question and the answer would be too long for here, but see my blog at my website for information on this. In short, it works very well. Search on Google for Practical Aquaponics and follow the links to my blog.
Yes it can....but the solar panels and battery back up can be expensive. The most economical way is to have grid connected solar panels on your home and supplement the power needed with that system.
I'd ilke to mae a aquaponic system but the problem is temperature. In France, winter is cold , so how to keep the fishes without warm the water? electrectricity is expensive! :(
Phosphorus is not a problem, enough comes into the system via the fish food...usually. Potassium is a bit more of an issue and needs to be consciously added somehow. Most who are into natural methods do things like bury banana skins in the media beds and the resident worms do the rest. Aquaponics is an ECO system.
If the fish caugh sickness and require medical attention, is there a safe way to apply medication? As in; we do not want medical chemicals in the eatable vegetables, right? At least in aquarium medication there is always a warning not to use on consumable fish. Separate medical aquarium does not quarantee the water on aquaponic system to be sterilized from the bad bacteria.
You dont need growing chemicals in aquaponics, that is the whole point.. the fish make the nutrients for the plants you dont need to add anything except fish food.
Do you know if your containers and tubing contain polymers that trigger Estrogenic Activity (EA) in humans and animals(fish too)? One of the most famous EA is BPA(Bisphenol A) but there are more harmful polymers than BPA being used in plastics. A major purpose of growing Aquaponics is to minmize the chemicals used in growing but if containers you're using are leaching harmful chemicals, it's no different than you adding harmful chemicals. Do a search on "plastic estrogenic activity".
IM SORRY BUT ME PERSONALLY NEVER LIKED THE WORD CANT...LETS SUPPOSE I HAD THE SPACE TO HAVE A 100,000 LITER POOL TO FILL IT WITH FISH ...HOW MANY GROW BEDS WILL I NEED TO LEVEL IT ALL OUT? I JUST ORDERED YOUR DVDS! I AM INTERESTED IN LEARNING THIS BUSINESS! ANY ADVISE ON ANY SCHOOLING FOR THESE SKILLS WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED....LOVE YOUR VIDEOS MURRAY
Love your informative video Thank you!! Those vegies look extremely healthy. What is the best ph level for the fish? Im a pioneer with an open source sustainable community project called OneCommunityRanch (a .org) and we are getting ready to set up an organic farm using Aquaponics and are hoping to find some members educated in this system of growing. Thank You for the video!!
What type of plant and animals are best for a Northwest temperature? Have you compared your data with regular agriculture and aquaponic plant growth? If you had can you share it with me? I also need to ask if you have compared the energy and water use comparing regular agriculture and aquaponics. If you had could you please share it with me? Can you make a profit out of aquaponics? How? Have you thought of having a Community aquaponics project?

I will be buying his DVDs... looks great!
This is absolutely amazing, sincerely this is great. I am certain that one day I will make this!
This is the best video on Aquaponics on you tube thanks for posting.

From Santa Barbara Aquaponics. You have inspired me so much! I am taking courses and building systems.

I start them in seed pots. It is good and saves seed, no waste. Transplant them out into the beds when they are ready.
All good ideas you have there VBIRD. Move toward sustainability. It is a wonderful thing.
santabarbaraaquaponics saying Hi. You have inspired me so much, I am taking courses and setting up systems. All the Best!!

I love this concept ! Great videos for sure !
Great video!
Thanks Bucky. Love Aquaponics.
What a great vid. Nice inspiration to get started. Thanks for posting
Great video...thanks
Thank you for posting. Please find more videos on AquacultureHub.
Fantastic video i have watched a few and this has been the most informative .. im starting by aquaponics set up asap ...
Plants sure love it , that is for sure......don't worry, drought will return as it always has.
i wish i could visit this grower and see hands first his garden . it looks amazing.
Excellent!!
Thanks for the upload Mate, I really learned a lot, I wish someday I can set-up my own Aquaponics...God Bless you Mate.
Anything is possible. I like the idea. Would be really good to see working.
Thanks for your comment. Yes a large community garden is a great idea.
This is the most awesome video on youtube. I might trying growing strawberry and rearing fish. Very good video and the guy is an Aussie as well.
love it !! your living my dream
thank you for the informational video it was helpful.
Thanks for the video, its very informative.
this video is very informative.
Depends on how big they are, how good the filtration is and how much food is given each day.
I wish this technology would be spread all around the world. This could be a viable solution for global hunger.
You are most welcome
It depends on your budget and space you have , but about 1000 ltrs (250 gallons) is a good sized small system.
Yes, very much so. Worms are the Aquaponic secret weapon !!!
Tasted great too.......yumm
No one has an accent until you go overseas !!!!
I am sorry, I do not know what you mean by "uniforming"
We manufacture them here at Practical Aquaponics
Very informative, thanks mate.
The short answer is No....but I am not so sure I really understand what you are getting at.
Trying to keep it simple in regard to formula , but strictly speaking it is really about the amount of fish food put into the system, not the number of fish.
We manufacture them at Practical Aquaponics.
I assume the fish reproduce and so this is a sustainable system?
a thought on the part about the pool... what if you built a multileveled greenhouse on top of the pool? wouldn't that have a chance of working??
We try to keep the pH in the mid 6 to 7.

We keep ours going all year round. Our climate is mild so we ca do that.

hi. do u need to add fertilizer too or just need to maintain the pH? ty
Do the fish reproduce on their own or do you have to get more fish to keep a continuous supply?
In the case of a swimming pool - couldn't you just reduce the stocking density to match the amount of growbeds you build?
Aquaponics is so interesting!
How long would it take for the production to pay for what it cost to build and maintain it?
just terrific. Thanks for this awesome Video.Do you have any service centres/branches in India?
Yes you could......it is a bit of a balancing act but it can be done.
I surely did.......that's how we say it down-under.
¿hay una version en español?
280 fish in a 700 gallon tank? That seems like a lot of fish.
Use a fish that is local to your area, perhaps Trout .
I'd ilke to mae a aquaponic system but the problem is temperature. In France, winter is cold , so how to keep the fishes without warm the water? electrectricity is expensive! :(
You are welcome
can you use worm juice from a worm farm as a substitute for the seaweed extract?
is it possible to grow these in every climate, every season?
this shit is amazing
so do you still need a sump for the fish waste ?
Phosphorus is not a problem, enough comes into the system via the fish food...usually. Potassium is a bit more of an issue and needs to be consciously added somehow. Most who are into natural methods do things like bury banana skins in the media beds and the resident worms do the rest. Aquaponics is an ECO system.
Thanks for the video! When you said 300mm deep did you include the gravel?
What's a good sized system for a beginner to start?
Yes, lots of vegetarians do Aquaponics. Grow decorative fish....yes why not, a good idea.

You dont need growing chemicals in aquaponics, that is the whole point.. the fish make the nutrients for the plants you dont need to add anything except fish food.
People should use this system to help endangered species of fish or flowers as well.
can you plant the seed on anything???
how do you start your seeds?
Where can I get this in the States ???
Please,please,please :)

That sounds like "color rot" or "Pythium" Much more of a problem in Hydroponic than in Aquaponics. Is your system a floating raft system ?
where do you get those type of tanks for the fish and plants????
if you eat the plants and fish can you be given samonala poisoning or other diseases from the fish.
It would work. Need some creative design, but a good concept.
Whats the name of the blue fish in this vid?
