    Aquaponics is really the wave of the future. Everyone could have fresh, organic vegetables and fish growing in their back yard. Fascinating! Thank you for the video.

    I'm sold on this idea. I am amazed at the ingenuity that went into designing and constructing such a system. I plan to learn more and when I can, make it a reality for myself. What a way to feed families and people with minimal space to do so. Bravo!

  • @fishandveggies
    @fishandveggies  12 лет назад

    Yes, folk who do Aquaponics make sure the containers used are the very best available for the very reason you have raised. My personal preference is marine grade fibreglass. It is inert when cured and lasts a lifetime. The move toward sustainability is a journey and we are always striving to do the very best we can with what we have available to us. Aquaponics is a giant leap forward in securing food purity for families who are health concious. Thanks for raising this issue.

    absolutely amazing, I'm thinking about a herb garden, this however gave me an idea for some serious plants. Amazing how we are all led to believe that spraying and chemistry is the best solution, meanwhile, the best solution for sustainable food supply is staring right at us with this solution.

    So very true Amokvrs. Aquaponics is an ECO system, pure and simple. That is it's beauty. That is where the similarity to Hydroponics and Aquaculture takes a large divergence. Aquaponics relies on natural processes just like a really well found Permaculture garden that relies on all the bacteria, fungi and myriads of critters to make it all work.

    Thank you so much for spreading this awsome info I use to never think that thinigs like this would work because of the way that I was tought to think about food. now that my views on food have changed I think systems like these are awesome. And I for one would love to see more tax payers dollars going on to programs and systems like these because when every thing get used there is no waste. Love peace and blessing from Los Angeles California BUCKY.

    Jade Perch...an amazing Australian native fish that has four times more Omega 3 than any other fish on the planet. Tastes good too, especially steamed or smoked.

    I start them in seed pots. It is good and saves seed, no waste. Transplant them out into the beds when they are ready.

    there are passive solar designs that work great to keep temperatures high enough to keep cold water fish going. Methane gas harvesting off compost could be used for a heater, there are options, but, cold water fish are going to be an important factor.

  • @oliverjamescarr
    @oliverjamescarr 13 лет назад

    Great, I was wondering why do you use a syphon to drain the whole bed when its full and then fill it again in a cycle like that? I have seen systems that continuously flow water over their plants and they have a timer set to have set times for running for example they might have it run for an hour and then cut it off for 2. This may be better if it works the same as i would like to time it as i plan on using solar to power the pumps.

  • @Swansen03
    @Swansen03 13 лет назад

    how are there zero comments? he has this like a flood and drain type system. Thinking about this, you could do this on a permaculture set up, small ponds surrounded by flora and fauna should work just as well, the pond will also work well for irrigation. 6:30 he talked about that, and true, for and urban setting you have to be more creative if you didn't want tanks. compost and thing like aitpots/smartpots could work for root crops in this system.

    Very interesting. But, instead of use media bed volume in relation to fish tank volume, it would´t be prefereble to use media bed volume in relation to fish biomass in the tank?

    i need help i have a nice 55 gallon fish tank an im looking to set up an aquaponics system but im looking to grow some more smokable vegetables but i need help understanding the chemical balance for the plants, because it just doesnt seem fathomable for plant chemicals to mix with my fish chemicals? wont the fish chemicals mess with the vegetables?

    We keep ours going all year round. Our climate is mild so we ca do that.

  • @fishandveggies
    @fishandveggies  12 лет назад

    Yes it can....but the solar panels and battery back up can be expensive. The most economical way is to have grid connected solar panels on your home and supplement the power needed with that system.

  • @fishandveggies

    Phosphorus is not a problem, enough comes into the system via the fish food...usually. Potassium is a bit more of an issue and needs to be consciously added somehow. Most who are into natural methods do things like bury banana skins in the media beds and the resident worms do the rest. Aquaponics is an ECO system.

    If the fish caugh sickness and require medical attention, is there a safe way to apply medication? As in; we do not want medical chemicals in the eatable vegetables, right? At least in aquarium medication there is always a warning not to use on consumable fish. Separate medical aquarium does not quarantee the water on aquaponic system to be sterilized from the bad bacteria.

  • @enigma9789

    You dont need growing chemicals in aquaponics, that is the whole point.. the fish make the nutrients for the plants you dont need to add anything except fish food.

    Do you know if your containers and tubing contain polymers that trigger Estrogenic Activity (EA) in humans and animals(fish too)? One of the most famous EA is BPA(Bisphenol A) but there are more harmful polymers than BPA being used in plastics. A major purpose of growing Aquaponics is to minmize the chemicals used in growing but if containers you're using are leaching harmful chemicals, it's no different than you adding harmful chemicals. Do a search on "plastic estrogenic activity".

  • @fishandveggies

    That sounds like "color rot" or "Pythium" Much more of a problem in Hydroponic than in Aquaponics. Is your system a floating raft system ?
