  • I honestly never thought things would get to this point. The past few months have been a real eye-opener in regard to directing the future of this channel. Both with general realizations within the racing game fandom and unfortunately a personal attack which was directed at me. It is time to take a whole new approach to content as a whole starting next month. I know this won't be for everyone, but it's a necessary step in my own personal development and growth as a content creator. Thank you so much for everything, and I hope to see as many of you all in the future.

@@ultraviolet_channel That's a fact after his trash ass take on NFS Hot Pursuit I was SO done. This guy is one of the main reasons why NFS is the way it is right now. Unbound was made to cater to clowns like him unfortunately. I totally understand leaving the community bro, I did too. Racing games used to be my favorite genre but seeing what it was become and the bleak future(I have no faith in the Forza Reboot and consider Test Drive 3 the last shot at least AAA games wise). The community thinks NFSMW is the God of Gods, that NFS without customization is pointless, that the Black Box era of games is NFS. As much as I love and appreciate those childhood games... That's a variation of NFS identity it's true identity was the games up all the way to NFS Hot Pursuit 2 and especially NFS 2 SE(which is why I love HP so much and why it's my favorite). NFS needs to return to that classic 90's formula of what made it great back then the open tracks with scenery, the cars, the music, the presentation, the cops, etc. Sorry for the long rant but I'm just a big fan of racing games man from the low budgets(L.A Rush, Ford Racing 3, and DT Racer) to the big games(NFS, Midnight Club, Motorstorm, Burnout), and the underappreciated(Blur, Driveclub, Driver SF, Split Second) and to see my childhood genre go out like this it breaks my heart. I completely understand leaving the toxic ass community and sticking to indies or the classics, wish the best of luck good sir! :)

Hey Moses! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I've felt a distant sense of Deja vu with this video.
Believe it or not, every point you brought up in your video was already true several years ago. When I fully kicked in gear to create English content centered around racing games myself, I hit the same brick wall at around 2017. New games were disappointing, community was too vocal for its own good, and in general it felt like nothing I uploaded mattered. So I explored other venues of content - vlogging, variety streaming, essays, you name it. At the end of the day however, after many years, I somehow managed to circle back to racing game content.
Why is that? It's hard to explain. What I know for sure is that my approach to creating racing game content changed drastically. Instead of making analysis and news related videos with a critical eye, I'm now just engaging with the fun aspect of my favorite games. And if a new game doesn't captivate me, I'm simply not creating content on it. My general approach nowadays is - hey, I love this game, how can I present it in the most fun way possible?
We both create completely different kinds of videos, but maybe you can carry that approach into your future content as well. From the final few lines in your video it sounds like you do. Either way I'm wishing you the best with the future of the channel. 💛

What is sad that not just the racing game community is insanely toxic, it's the whole car community also if someone doesn't like a car category, they're getting dissed and this is not a great example for someone who want to get into this community, also the problem is that some cars are just being overhyped (Supra) by people who don't even knows how a car work.
This things are not reflecting any good light on the car community and also on the racing game community.

Thank you for speaking about this, it's a problem that gets forgotten or glanced over. The circlejerk and the nostalgia have blinded the racing community for way too long, I used to be a part of the racing community (I went by a different name then, I've since rebranded myself on the internet) but I slowly started to see that it's become more toxic and the amount of people who say "we want remastered!" has tired me. I transitioned into different communities because of these two reasons alone.

Hey Moses, I think your opinions definitely how a lot of us in the racing community feel deep down inside, especially nowadays. The racing game community is incredibly divided and super vocal about it. Sim racers don’t like arcade racers, arcade racers don’t like sim racers, and simcades are kinda stuck in the middle. Since there have really only been one or two mainstream games for those three categories, they play it safe with what works best and makes the most money. It’s sad because there’s so little for experimentation since it’ll probably be vocally shunned for not fitting in (ironically from a community begging for more unique games). It’s probably why we don’t have games like Blur or the Driver Series anymore.

  • @rodracer4567
    @rodracer4567 Год назад +68

I've been feeling the same way lately.
I've recently realized that the toxicity was starting to affect my enjoyment of games. I too was starting to belive that games like Horizon 5 were mediocre but then I remembered I had grown up playing games of worse quality and thoroughly enjoying them. And the reason I did was because I wasn't on the internet that much and didn't, day after day, expose myself to people screeching that those games were trash and to never touch them. I enjoyed games like Most Wanted 2012 since launch because I played it for myself first before finding out about it's overwhelmingly negative reception. The opposite is the true for Midnight Club: Los Angeles, no praise for that game is gonna make me want to play that ever again.
I won't be stepping away from the racing genre in the slightest, it's literally the only genre of video game I even play, but definitely gonna try to minimize as much contact with the racing community as much as possible. Only going in for news of upcoming games/updates for games I already have and nothing beyond that.
I need to relearn to base the quality of racing games based on what **I** want, not what a bunch of strangers on the internet want.

What the Racing Community might want is something like Test Drive Unlimited, and an idea I've got is basically Stuntman but bigger. Being the Stunt Driver following a Director, and then you become the Director and get to fulfil movie ideas through customization. Smaller highways with extra tracks would be Open Levels. Sponsorships could be ways of getting certain brands to focus on and in a manner celebrate through their cars. It might help if every sound and action is made as dramatic as possible with realism avoided entirely for the sake of a driving fantasy, which I think is what Most Wanted '05 was doing. Regardless of my own ideas though, have fun making long detailed Video Essays about your favorite games whatever their genre might be~

The genre can't really evolve anymore, i also think people are just hella blinded by nostalgia and are repulsed by changes.
Any open world game is a snooze fest because ALL games are open world nowadays. GTA kinda killed good games lmao. Forza Horizon tried to do the TDU kinda thing and it started wearing out by the 3rd game. Colin McRae Dirt series was always the same game improved, then Codemasters tried to go with the modern X Games route, then Gymkhana and DiRT3 was HATED when it came out. Same with NFS Pro Street despite it being way less cringy than the previous ones.
I only know 3 car racing games that have a loving, wholesome playerbase that doesn't get bored of the game: NR2003, Asseto Corsa and BeamNG.drive. NR2003 can handle non-oval racing series. Assetto Corsa is complicated to create content, wayyyy harder than NR2003 but its good that it supports custom game modes, makes servers unique and interesting, and BeamNG is just gold, it literally has EVERYTHING.

    • @kak8895
      @kak8895 Год назад +15

@@LorikQuinn It can evolve, it's only a matter of time. I think a lot of the community uphold too high expectations when modern racing games look and feel better than their predecessors due to improvements in technology. Some of them are too stuck in nostalgia while some of us just play these games (old/new) to unwind and relax in an open world. We don't mind purchasing multiple instead of fanboying over one. Set your expectation low and have fun and if you still don't fancy the game don't bother purchasing it. GTA didn't kill nothing because the racing games/community is entirely different than whatever is going on there, not even comparable. Plus, racing games usually hold the title for best graphics and photorealism no genre has them matched in that aspect.

There’s an upcoming THQ game called Wreckreation that I haven’t heard a ton of buzz about but really looks to tick some of the boxes you’re bringing up here. It’s an open world sandbox style focused heavily on track building, terraforming and lots of crashes and stunts. AFAIK there’s no release date announced yet but there’s a page on Steam for it and a few trailers.
Now of course it could end up in development hell or be broken on launch, and there’s always questions about how it’ll be supported, monetized, etc, but I do think if anyone could bring some fresh air to the genre it’s THQ. On the other side there is Wreckfest, complete opposite of all these shiny and clean franchises like Forza and NFS, and it's extremely successful, even android port was made. Man i hate to keep bringing lines from RoflWaffle every time, but his take on the community is kind of a parallel line to my thoughts. The line in question would be: "if you don't like the current state of racing games, but still reinforce the status quo, then what the fuck do you really want?" To me, the community creates the weird void of opposing ideas, where revolutionary games are only praised when an entire decade has already passed, but when a new game tries to shake up even minor things, such as Unbound breaking up the (again) "status quo" of realism-obsessed artstyles, people start hating it as if everything that isn't the open-world realistic-looking and realistic-feeling customization-focused street racing happy game is just wrong. As if having ideas is wrong. And as if a game that takes few minutes to get accostumed to is wrong. "The devs are wrong, not the players" is what most people say, only to 10 or more years later, start saying that the game was oh so good and how, actually, the players were wrong for hating a humble attempt at something different. Do i really need to keep repeating myself? Or can we just remember games such as Pro Street or even the original Horizon, both wich had a set feeling, set story, and set purpose that, in a way, were different from the status-quo of their times

Arcade racing in my opinion is from an era where arcade gaming in general was still prominent. Nowadays all the big title games are essentially interactive movies. The new racing games suck because they try to please the old heads stuck in 2005, you were right about nostalgia and how nobody wants change. It's either developers want to make changes like with Forza Horizon(For better or worse, but definitely worse) or developers want to cash in on nostalgia like with Need for Speed(And yet they still fumble the bag)
The reason why I begin to appreciate The Crew 2 is that they don't care what the community says, they just do it, and it turns out people like the game for that.
The Crew 2 is probably the only "arcade-like" game that I generally enjoy nowadays otherwise I'm sticking with simulators like Assetto Corsa or even RIDE 4 despite how difficult it is.

As someone that has been into racing games since the first Gran Turismo, it's a shame that there isn't as much variety in racing game franchises as there used to be. As much as some AA and indie games have done well (Wreckfest, Circuit Superstars, Inertial Drift, etc.), it feels like most of the big names of the past 25 years have either fallen from grace in some way or have disappeared completely (F-Zero, Ridge Racer, Wipeout, Midnight Club...)
Not that I expect every modern game to be perfect, and it's important to recognise that old games weren't perfect either, but at best a lot of modern games annoy their players with monetization, substandard updates or regression of features, and at worst fail to function at all.
For me most of my enjoyment has been from playing online with friends in newer racing games, going back to/discovering old ones, or just messing around in BeamNG. I don't get involved with communities all that much anymore, which is probably for the best if your experiences are anything to go by.

This is also how I am feeling with racing games nowadays. I love playing these games a lot but it feels like everyone hates them for not being what they used to be 10+ years ago, then blames it on those who like the games for "ruining the franchise".
Then you have Theo. He complained a lot about NFS during the Criterion Era for not having customization and focused too much on Supercars instead of Tuners, then hyped up and defended the hell out of the Ghost Games era with 2015 being his favorite game and defending Payback, and Heat very heavily. With Unbound, his hate against Criterion grew stronger because they nerfed the Golf GTI. I really couldn't believe he was very upset over that...
I love Modern NFS, but I do agree that I wish they had closed tracks in the next game, because Open World Multiplayer has gotten boring, mostly because little to no one plays with you in these events.
Eh, I'm randomly speaking things but leaving the r/needforspeed subreddit was the best thing for me to do. I hate seeing the same topics over and over. Mostly the nostalgia posts and everyone ranting on the newer games. It's all a mess and I just want to enjoy my games...

Man, racing games feel mid nowadays.
All racing games are the same:
Open world with customization and a story (sometimes), yadda yadda yadda. Lame shit.
Now, I like this formula, it's my favorite racing game formula of them all, but having all the big name racing games be like this is boring. I used to not like the OG NFS style when you said it but now it doesn't sound like a bad idea.
As for the community itself, I agree because all I see is people getting heated because they are stuck in 2005 saying that "MW2005 bEST NFs GAmE eVA" or "wHeRe unDergrounD 3"
Also, I rlly don't game that much but I also wanna get into different genres. I want Skate 3 and starting to think abt getting into Fortnite a lil bit. I've also been playing Minecraft a lot too.
Edit: Oh yeah, most of the big content creators like AR12 and Blackpanthaa and Camodo are so similar. They either play Forza, Asseto Corsa Hesi or BeamNG, and I like AR12 because he has skill issues, and Camodo because of his charm, I wanna see people like YBR make a return. Homie was my childhood when I was 3 in 2013, and man was goated. I miss him (he just quit RUclips).
Hope you have fun on your new journey man :)
Edit 2: Also, I still mostly play racing games, but i just don't participate in the community that much, so maybe that may help too.

I've always been partial to the Horizon series, and I think something that's been lost over the years is that progression from a slower car, winning races and seriously putting thought into the next car you were going to buy, because money didn't come easily. Now, with wheelspins and a shift towards car collecting, we've all got a garage with hundreds of cars, and there isn't as much of a connection. I'm excited for the next Forza Motorsport, but I do resonate with what you're saying in this video. The lack of progression is what I think wear me out from even driving my favourite cars, because I didn't feel like it's anything special and I've done the exact same shit for 2 years in Horizon 4. It's also probably why I only drive cars with my own liveries on these days, because it's the only way to feel that sense of "I worked my ass off for that" that makes a car feel special. And even then I'm still questioning whether it's worth it, because GT players, and I believe even professional livery creators, don't spend 15 hours recreating the sponsor logos with primitive shapes before working on the actual livery.

Play (Insent what they like while disregarded your own opinion about the game you like making it all about themselves) and you get better taste." This lemming mentality reminds me of the sonic community back when everyone was hating sonic because of an noticeable amount of sub-par to bad games releasing but when some sonic games came out to be overall a 7/10 game it gets ignored by the people who say "Sonic was never good."

NFS was a good example. People talk about they don't want change, but NFS has done nothing but change. TNFS was originally a game from Road & Track that let you drive sports cars on closed courses. Then III expanded more on super cars and police chases, but still focuses on the cars themselves with those awesome showcases. NFSHP2 expanded on NFSIII, but then suddenly we had Underground which completely changed the formula entirely with its average road cars and tuners and maximum customization, and with U2 even going open world. And now all of a sudden nobody wants to go back to the old days of NFS with its fun super car gameplay.
And to add even further, Unbound has its issues, yeah, but what everyone doesn't understand is that Unbound is a game that FINALLY has an identity of its own with a unique style, and people hate it for that. We're so used to every game looking photo-realistic and like every other game that when something tries something different to finally stand out from the crowd, everyone is against it.

Honestly, I think Forza and NFS play a big role in why the community has that have-mind mentality. And you are right, the community does want an open-world racing game that has NFS levels of customization and racing physics like Forza Horizon. And that's the problem one has what the other doesn't and neither one of them want to make that change to please those people. It would be helpful to know what percentage of these players belong to which franchise. Is it just Horzion players leaking over to NFS because they are tired of the same old forza aero and 2-3 new body kits? Or is it NFS player leaking over to Horizon because they are tired of the drift to turn physics of NFS.

I feel the same sentiment. I've really felt the stagnation of racing games, especially over the last few years, and I do think a large part of that is due to the reasons you mentioned in the video. The racing community seemingly has this voracious appetite for what it is that they would consider "the perfect game," though they neglect to realize that even when presented with their ideal game, it still wouldn't live up. I think this is, in a large part, due to this revolving door of expectations that continue to contradict each other. "There needs to be more customization!" Well, now there aren't enough vehicles. "This game needs handling like (x) game." Now the game is too similar to (x) game. "They need to remaster the older games!" Now it's a rehash of something that was once great.
Such an overwhelming sense of entitlement from a community that doesn't even know what it wants. I would love to see the developers of a forza, or a need for speed, or whatever other big budget triple-a experience, do something COMPLETELY out of left field. However, with the way things sit, it would be difficult, because the community continues to BE difficult.
I know this comment is really me just echoing what was said in the video, but I think there is a lot of truth to what you said. I just hope everyone in the racing scene takes the steps towards being more accepting of change. It's the only way I ever see the games - what makes this community special - seeing a return to their former glory.

What you described in this video was the entire gaming community as a whole. We're living in the day and age where everyone has to be pissed off and complain about something.
I understand we as the gaming community has been burned by developers and publishers throughout the 2010s. But now that animosity has turned into a toxic cesspool of negativity and arguments/fanboy flame wars.

I'm sorry to hear what happened with your family, I can't understand why someone would stoop to such a low level over a different opinion, on behalf of the racing commission I apologise.
I also want to apologise for any other harassment you get over having your own opinion. People who attack others over stuff like that are on the same level as dictators and need to accept that not everyone is the same and that's completely okay. If everyone liked and hated the same things the world would be so boring.
Good luck with any future projects you may have, and hopefully, you'll return to the racing franchise if it improves, and hopefully, the community will grow up and stop being petty :)

Racing games inspired me to become an automotive engineer, a position I am currently striving for. The games from the xbox 360 era are enough to give me satisfaction and even then, I stopped playing. I am currently on self-improvement and I suggest that everyone who sees this comment gets on it too. If you love cars or anything fast, you'll see that racing video games are a time-sink not worth your time, which instead you should be using to get a job and get a project car and race. Or to train to become a good driver in real life

I 100% agree with you about the fandom. We are never going to get Most Wanted ‘05 again. Even if they did a carbon copy remaster of it, people will find things to complain about. I’ll be honest I do hate on FH5 but not because of nostalgia for FH1 but just the overall gameplay with multiplayer and just the overall lack of progression. I don’t want another Horizon 1, I want a game that gives you more of a challenge and to have a decent competitive multiplayer with freedom that only Horizon 1 managed to achieve in that series.
I actually really enjoyed Unbound, sure it’s not perfect but I had fun with it. I do like the idea of building cars and driving them in open world while progressing, that’s my style of play (which is why personally the horizon series just doesn’t appeal to me anymore).
Sad to see you leave all the best with your future endeavours with different games.

As someone who only recently started to watch your videos, and get into the sort of content that you make, it's sad to hear how such an experience has fully managed to ruin something. Your NFS Unbound video managed to put into words a lot of viewpoints I was struggling to express, because I wondered whether or not people would fully shit on me for having criticisms about the game in general (cops, map, cars, story, etc.)
It stinks that there are people who will go as far as they did, seemingly for something that we all supposedly call ourselves fans over. I'll be sticking around in the future for whatever it is you have planned first!
