  • This is a detailed video showing the different fuel senders for early and late R107 Mercedes SL's. The video shows how to remove and open up a fuel sender and repair it if need be. The video also shows how you can purchase later fuel senders relatively cheaply from companies such as Uro Parts and Rockauto. Most of these parts are still available from Mercedes directly, and the SL Shop also has a huge range of fuel related parts.

Thanks for all the advice Mike, really helpful. I'm not getting any resistance reading so trying to remove the unit. However, the nut is really stuck and not budging, any advice on how to release it?

Hi, sorry to hear you’re having a problem. What tool are you using to remove the nut? Do you have the correct sized socket and an impact wrench? Mike

Hi Mike thanks a lot for your videos. I've a questions : you put the pieces with rust in a liquid, which liquid do you use to remove the rust?
    Thanks

Hi - if you are feeling rich, then Evaporust is the best ready made rust remover I have come across. If you have LOTS of pieces with rust, then the De Ox C crystals from Bilt Hamber work really well too:

Excelente Maestro, ¿ Tienes la información de los colores de los cables para cada terminal del aforador y qué función es la de cada terminal ?, es que mi automóvil tiene desintegrado el conector del cableado.

Mike I noticed you have a cross reference from number on diagram to part number. I have the original 1971 catalog for my 1972 350SL US that has the diagrams with numbers on each page. Can you please let me know where you found the cross reference to Mercedes part number. Many thanks!

Thanks Mike you are very helpful. I am going send my tank to radiator repair shop to be boiled out. It’s in much better shape than yours but there was rust in the gas i drained. My sender is different to yours. It has 5 tiny nuts that hold it down. I think it will have a small non rubber gasket I will need order. I am going to remove tomorrow.

      Mike I have a 1972 350SL VIN 10704412005561. It is a very early US version with a V8 450 engine.

It is 8 inches long. I took it out and had trouble pulling the last tiny bit because the bottom cap was rusted. I slightly damaged the very bottom tube hoping I can patch with epoxy something resistant to fuel.

I took apart and cleaned my old style sender. It was horribly dirty. Just before i or it together, i broke a thread wire. I soldered it but it isn't very good. As a result my gage is erratic. Some day i will buy a new old style one.

I have two old style ones - both look OK although I havnt fully tested them. I'll let you know if and when I list it on ebay. Those old style senders are horribly expensive! Mike

At 7:21 how do you remove the plastic cover inside the soft top compartment. I don’t want to pry it off and bend or break it. It doesn’t twist off either. I’ve tried that. Any ideas?

From memory, it is just a press fit. They can be rusted in there and are still available if you do break it....
