Hi Guys - very informant information. When we travelled 'quick time' our accommodation averaged at $74 per day across the world, but totally agree when staying for long periods in the same place proper savings can be made by renting accommodation. We did a business class world ticket which covered most of our long hauls and tried to do night flights only so that we would save on the cost of one night hotel accommodation. When we did Thailand we did 5 internal flights averaging out at $122 per flight for the two of us. We worked on the principle that we may never be able to afford to do our world tour ever again so we hammered doing everything we thought was worth doing whist we were in every country which adds a lot to a daily budget. Under entertainment it cost us more because we paid to get into lots of things for example the Grand Palace complex in Bangkok, which cost 1000 baht for two of us ( $29) - Love your channel Phil & Judith
Underspent? You two deserve an 🥇. To come in under with the challenges is a real accomplishment. I was watching this video with my husband who hasn’t seen one of your videos in a while remarked how confident and easygoing Sarah seems now filming. Hope you both feel better soon.
Hey Heaven AndEarth! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! I thought that was a pineapple when I first saw it and was thankful that we have one in the fridge! Thank you so much for this kind comment.... to say it is a challenge that I am working on is an understatement so to hear this is truly wonderful. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Congrats guys. Its good you have some surplus as you'll need it when you come to Australia. Safe travels and hopefully your health is returning for both of you. X
You should couch surf Australia! I'm sure there are enough of us to accommodate you across this great nation. You have a free stay here in Ballarat, if you wish. Own room and ensuite. I'm in FIRE planning stage at the moment and I'm in awe at the level of planning that you are sharing. Your information will mean that we can retire and travel by age 55. Thank you xox
Happy 1st anniversary! Such a bummer to celebrate it with Covid, but you both did a stellar job! Best wishes for a very speedy recovery so you can get back out and enjoy Thailand.
Hey Ashley! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment as ever! Yes we are climbing the walls, funny thing... right opposite our apartment has been a music/ food festival for the entire time we have been sick, so we have heard it, we have seen it from afar but not been able to go! So frustrating. Hope you are well Ashley! Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Hope you’re both feeling better soon. Well done with being under budget, especially at a time when we’re experiencing high inflation.. We are over budget unfortunately, I didn’t realise accommodation would be so expensive. Spain is not actually as cheap as I was expecting. I guess it doesn’t help that we’re here during a big festival either. Once we get to Asia it should be much cheaper.
Hey Danielle! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! Yes that is Europe for you eh, you will love the prices in Thailand... finding a mean for $1.00 is surprisingly easy and tasty. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
I hope that you will be well soon. Thank you for sharing your travel with us. I enjoyed watching your adventure and your love for travel. Great job on staying within your budget. 👏👏👏🙏❤️🍻
Thank you, fun and informative! Hope Sarah gets well fast! I tried early retirement at 40+ and found that I actually missed working plus money was running out faster than expected due to sudden unforeseen health issues. Also, costs are usually higher per person if traveling alone (which I was). So I am back at work and will try early retirement again in a few years time, in the meantime learning from your experiences. I like your honesty and no-sugar coating!
Hey Agnieszka! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! That is a real thing and something that we struggle with at times, stepping away from work. It isn't as easy as it can look. Sounds like you have a plan and that is the best thing, rather than being aimless like so many people. Keep up the work and you will get there. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
My darling wife and I are doing our research to go slow travelling next year and this is very exciting! Thanks to you I now know we can afford a place like Athens which I really hadn’t been considering except for very short excursions. Thanks and bless you! With love, Ken
Wow, for people just getting over covid, you did a pretty amazing job with this video. The best part - sense of humor and sparkling personalities still in tact. Bravo :)
Hey Stacie! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! Well after editing the video, Neil was back in bed and still not doing great, hoping we can improve for next weekends video! That is a lovely comment for you to make ❤️ Best regards, Neil & Sarah
We spent March and April in southern US and just got back from a month in Toronto and Montreal, Canada. We tried to be frugal and our Airbnbs were very modest and yet we spent way too much. We realize that we may need to travel to cheaper regions if we are to respect our projected budget, especially with inflation. Your numbers are impressive. Good job! Hope you feel better soon.
Hey Marie! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! The nice thing is that the cheaper regions don't lack any of the amenities of enjoyment of more expensive places, this is the real travel hack. Thank you for the kind words. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
I like the budgdt topic and think having it in 2 halves is a good idea, We are a decade older and slowed by health issues but fortunately traveled a good bit before and in the first couple of years of retirement/ You guys are wise to get it done now and like your plan. I look forward to each of your well produced videos the quality and content and enjoyment are very high. Great job again
More travel inspiration from a truly endearing couple. So glad you are taking it easy during COVID (a key to help it not linger). Looking forward to full recovery and more adventure coming soon 🌅
Hey Kit! Thank you so much. We were only able to record this yesterday but Neil still needs to improve. Thank you for your lovely support as ever. Best wishes Neil & Sarah
Hey Aura! Yes, we think we can do even better next year, will be exciting to see 😃👍. Thank you as ever for your lovely support. Best wishes Neil & Sarah
Enjoy watching you both, thanks for all the tips and insight. We hope to retire in a little less than 6 yrs. look forward to your new adventures. Hope you get well soon.
Hey Kim! Thank you for getting in touch. We remember 6 years before vividly! That time flew so quickly. Neil is still struggling, thank you for your kind words. Best wishes Neil & Sarah
This was really helpful, what an inspiring job staying under budget when so many other nomads seem to be busting through their budgets. I thought an earlier suggestion to add what you saved this year to next year was a good one. Be well soon and thanks for making the video even when you weren’t feeling 100%.
Hey BMV! Thank you so much. Yes we are over the moon to come in under budget... We like the idea of adding on the saving from this year... We'll discuss that, nice one! Best wishes Neil & Sarah
I think your Year 2 budget will be the same. Although prices may be a bit higher due to inflation, you've learned a few tricks this past year that will help you save money. Here's to a speedy recovery!
Hey Linda! We think you may well have hit the nail on the head here. We are getting better at this. we're still working on the budget.... we'll let you all know once we have decided the final figure. Best wishes Neil & Sarah
I really hope you are both fully recovered from your COVID. Congrats on being under budget, especially with having to roll with some punches. It must really affirm your decision to live this lifestyle. Enjoy Thailand once you are recovered!!
Would be nice to see something like this now that you are 4 years into retirement. Have an idea how you have adjusted your budget in these last few years, especially considering inflation and if you have maintained your buying power. Glad you guys are back and good luck with the second channel as well. Also, although I know Brazil has a bad reputation as being dangerous, much of it is just that, if you know where you are going it's actually a wonderful country with many amazing experiences to be had at an affordable budget. Give it look sometime. The South, Santa Catarina is especially safe and beautiful.
I can't give you an exact budget because of the variables in exchange rates and inflation, but I think you are doing really good. One thing we have done doing our travels around the state we live in is check the local paper Part of traveling is meeting people sometimes there will be notifications for festivals and church carnivals that are free of course you would have to pay for food, but your going to eat anyway. We had a wonderful time meeting and talking with new people. Hope you two are better soon so you can resume your travels.
Hey Linda! We like that advice. We do always try to integrate wherever we go as that is where the best experiences seem to come from. As you say, it can be cost effective too... we like that 👍 Best wishes Neil & Sarah
Neil, hope you feel better soon.. Thank you both for uploading this detailed video. Your budget and expenses are more realistic. It is very helpful for us as we are also planning but are concerned because of the current market and inflation. However, your video is reassuring. Thank you! How do you deal emotionally with market volatility in retirement years?
Hey Jay &Nandita! Yes we are very comfortable with costs after doing this first year. You ask a good question which we think we'll answer visa or videos over the next couple of weeks. Happy to wait and see what we come up with? Best wishes Neil & Sarah
My budget has decreased year by year, but more naturally than intentionally. Year 1 I was like TAKE MY MONEY but when I ran out of money and started working, I was alarmed at how much I could've saved! But we only live once right! Plus of course as you become more experienced you naturally spend far less
Hey David! Really appreciate the comment as ever. It is amazing how quick the money can just go isn't it. But also we found (not quite as stealthy as you though) that in time being more prudent on spending isn't too tricky at all. You are the master of this stuff though. *** Any viewers reading this, go check out The Tao of David channel on RUclips, he is the real deal *** Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Love getting into the details! I expect a bit of inflation in our family budget but luckily we have been paying off our mortgage aggressively over the last 4 years so that should give us some buffer. Try to stay upright on that scooter Neil!
Hey Steve! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment again. Doing well on the scooter so far lol! Well done on taking the mortgage on, it is easy to take for granted the low interest rates, but things always change, so getting rid of that debt, GREAT WORK, keep going for that. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Hey Magenta! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! Same here... but we sent all our winter clothes home the day that Greece experienced its worst snowstorm in years lol. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
@@2GoRoam last year was the first time I spent the entire summer in Britain. I made a note about what I learned, and when we came over in May (from Texas) to spend the summer here this time, I brought long underwear! So my strategy is to have summer and winter clothing, but I pretty much only have one of each thing! And I regularly wear a lot of layers. As you know, it’s four seasons in one day around here 😉 Happy Travels! XX Dara
Hope you both get well soon. Extremely helpful video. Will be very affordable in my particular situation. A typical one-person dinner with one drink will be $30-40 where I currently live (northern california). Love your videos, down to earth yet a bit fun and humor
Hey JFK! Really appreciate the comment, wow $30/$40 would leave our budget dead in the water. Although northern California is absolutely gorgeous! We hope to visit sometime soon. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Hey Sarah and Neil, another great video appreciated hearing about your expenses for the year you must be wrapped you came in under budget ❤.Neil hope you get well rapido and for you both your back out and about and doing what you both love soon...sending much love for who you are and, all you do ....
Hey Dawn! Really appreciate the comment, lovely words. We are over the moon and slightly surprised to be under budget. We really didn't look at the numbers much the last couple of months, just diligently recorded what we had spent, so it was a nice surprise. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Neil & Sarah Thank you soo much for your fantastically detailed video. Having been saving frantically and itching FIRE your detailed breakdown has reassured us we can travel sooner than we expected…so excited to be and looking forward to seeing lots of new things and feeling lighter too we can do this fairly soon and not in 5yrs as expected! Get well soon both…enjoy the gorgeous thai food and good health in your future travels! 😘
Hey Jac Mac! Thanks for getting in touch, that is wonderful news and the top reason why we wanted to have a RUclips channel in the first place, to help people see how achievable (or not) it would be for them. Great! Thank you for telling us. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Another great video. Loved the info and great graphics. Was surprised to see the costs in some areas vs others. Always great info which helps my planning to launch in 2024. Hope you're feeling better now and back out exploring to enjoy more 🍎🦄!
Hope you are feeling back "up to snuff" very soon. Belated Happy Birthday Sarah! I am amazed by your spending plan and execution you two! After two plus years of Covid, Jane and I are hoping to do a little US-based travel ourselves so we will definitely be spending more than last year- thank goodness!! Love the video and take care.
Hey Godon! Thank you for the kind comment, we had a great time celebrating my birthday. Yes keeping it local in the US for a while is a good idea as we find out how this inflation will work out. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
So sorry to hear about your coming down with Covid. Kudos to your effort in producing this video. The only comment about your budget would be to consider staying longer at your chosen destination. This would minimize your expenses on flights and maybe the need to acquire more clothing items.
In Chang Mai, are they still very strict with COVID precautions! Do you know how you both got it? We are in Merida, Mexico at the moment and everyone is still wearing masks and maintaining the COVID protocols. Great job on keeping your budget with inflation being at an all time high. Our monthly spend is much lower at 3300/month.
Hey Dina! Really appreciate the comment as ever. Things are starting to relax here but masks are worn inside for everyone and outside, locals are wearing masks, visitors less so. Our approach is to wear masks outside if we are in a busy area such as a market. That is a great spend, hope we can get close to that in our second year. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Great video. I hope you kick Covid quickly. I am in my early 40’s but my goal when I retire in my early 50’s would be travel on probably $50-60k. Just to throw in an occasional splurge/luxury vacation week in the mix.
Hey Dara! Very kind of you to say, we really appreciate it and you taking the time to comment. Yes that is a sensible number and gives you the ability to splurge when you see fit. We like it! Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Love your videos and congratulations on coming in under budget. It would be great if you do a really rough calculation for those of us who are single/solo to help us budget. Watching your videos thus far i am thinking its about 2/3 of your couple spend?
Hey Steven! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! Interesting thinking, we do store all of our expenses, every penny that we spend so we could think about how we could do that. 2/3 of a couple spend.... That sounds a great place to start, the one challenge you have is that accommodation is one of the biggest costs and sharing that is a big help but 2/3 sounds good to me. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
I hope you feel better soon! I think you could up your budget maybe 10% to account for inflation. Although, I think you guys could manage this years budget again if you needed to. You had some Dr visits etc this year that hopefully you won’t have next year.
Hey Felicia! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment as ever. We think we can manage on the same again, we will share with all once we have decided what to do... watch this space! Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Great video. Hope you're both feeling better soon. Our ideal travel budget will be a fair bit lower than your own, at least for the first few years. My partner is a little older than myself, so he may insist on upgrading the accommodations at some point (budget beds are not always the best on the back). We tend to drive motorcycle which reduces are transportation costs from city to city. Right now, we are traveling to the more affordable locations. Your video gave me hope that when we pull the trigger to travel full-time, we can afford a little more luxury and even consider a few destinations we thought may have been out of our price range. Thank you for what you do!
Hey Chrissy! Thank you so much for getting in touch. One of the reasons we decided to set the channel up was to help people work out the costs for how it could work for them, so it's lovely to hear you are taking something from it. Riding bikes from location to location sounds really cool! Best wishes Neil & Sarah
Hi Neil and Sarah, excellent video and well done for getting it edited and uploaded given that you are suffering with COVID. We hope you both get better soon. Well done on coming in under budget!!! Yay. I have just looked at how much we have spent so far, and the spreadsheet is saying £20,656.13 ($25,253.17) for exactly 7 months of travel - so far so good and currently on track for our own personal yearly travel budget of £40,000 ($48,901.96). Look forward to the next video.
Hey Craig! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! Wow you are doing brilliant with that budget for a family of 5, stunningly good, congratulations. We were thinking that although you are overseas, you are likely enjoying this heatwave in the UK this weekend eh? :-) Best regards, Neil & Sarah
@@2GoRoam Hi Neil and Sarah thank you for the reply and the positive feedback! Yeah I think it was the first time that England had a slightly higher temperature than us. lol. I believe they are back to rain next week! I think we will be making changes to our plans for next year in order to manage the high temperatures a bit better. Anything beyond about 28 degrees and it starts to become a bit too much.
Watching again to understand why your costs are so high. Clearly incidental’s are soaking up the daily budget but you set yourself that yearly spend so you are covered. On Brian and Carries channel they have just done their 2 months in the Algarve spend which came in @$4,500 approx or $75 daily, not eating out as much but it’s all about the journey!
I think your travel budget is amazing!! Less than $150/day in grand cities (Athens, etc.) is STUNNING! So many people spend so much more... question from an American who is considering this in mid life (45, my partner is 56)... we love to enjoy beers/drinks/etc. How much extra per month would you say to plan for food/drink/etc (as best as you can guess) for say Europe (Germany/Austria/etc) for 3 months? off season (ie: Oct/Nov/Dec). THANKS in advance!!
So sorry to hear that you’ve been hit by Covid and feeling poorly! Most importantly: I HOPE YOU FEEL BETTER SOON! Such an interesting video! Loved hearing your expenses by country. Yes currency conversion really matters! We are loving the fact that despite nasty inflation everywhere, the dollar is strong vs the pound right now!💪🤑
Hello Sarah and Neil, Been following your footsteps and amazed that you guys are actually reply to your fans’ comments. 👍 We sold our house and pretty soon will go expats. We are wondering about languages and cultures shocks? When going to countries that don’t really speak English? Thanks for your tips. 🥰
Hey Loan! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! We work hard to be in touch with our viewers as we know that leaving a comment actually takes time. So we want to reciprocate where we can. Sometimes life gets in the way, but we try to prioritise it. We are often in countries that don't speak english and this worried us before we did this but now, it doesn't phase us, there is always a work around and people are generally very helpful and nice. Learning the odd phrase can go a long way in people looking on you warmly. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
I think those prices for apples and unicorns every day are great! 🤣😂 I’m so sorry to hear that you both got Covid. Please, please take it easy and take care of yourselves. The exhaustion that comes from Covid is brutal! 🫶🏻 Congratulations on being under budget for the past year! I think for all that you did, and all the unforeseen challenges that you faced, y’all did an excellent job!! 🍾🎊🎉 Looking forward to next Saturday already! 😁
Hey Lorrie! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! Amazing how cheaply you can pick up a unicorn these days. Yes it seems to be dragging on and Neil is still suffering pretty bad. We will get there. Thanks for your lovely words. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Hello Neil and Sarah, Been watching your traveling, I wonder how you communicated with the Greek and Turkish? English is not widely speaking in their countries? I sold my house and will be expat soon, so your videos really help giving an idea. Thanks a lot and keep giving us more, especially true culture shocks encountered. 💝
Hey Loan! Really appreciate the comment, just answered this in the other comment but you will be find we are sure... Just be nice and people are nice back. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Hi Neil and Sarah, Well done on another great video! I hope your covid symptoms go away soon. The way you balance your commentary and banter between the two of you is quite remarkable. We, your audience, enjoy your dynamics as a couple as much as we do the content of your videos! Well done of course on being under budget - not that I doubted it for a moment. You are like me - human calculators - which just means you have a sense of what you are spending. I spent a couple weeks on vacation with a friend who commented that I seemed to calculate everything - I think it was a criticism? My view is that in the past particularly in Europe after the war people needed to budget and mind their expenses just to get to the end of the month. If they didn't they couldn't replace their worn out shoes or had to forego the Sunday roast. Yes, many of us are more affluent these days, but for some getting to the end of the month is never a problem because there is the credit card to tide them over! Yes, my friend is nowhere near being able to retire and says she guesses she will need to work until she dies - yes and she is a bit fed up with her job (we do live in Honolulu...so not all bad for her!). I have got her now investing and doing a budget and no I am not going to be her retirement ticket! Anyway, keep up the good work and the great life! Cheers, Rod PS I would be curious to know how you are balancing investment performance in these turbulent markets. That inflation has hurt both short-term and long-term strategies. I am beginning to think of slowly moving some of what has been a very large defensive cash position into longer term bonds while staying the course with my medium and long term stock positions. My sale of a very large holding in a very famous bank's stock (former employer) was looking a bit foolish last year - not this year!
Hey Rod! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment as ever. Firstly thank you for the kind comments about our onscreen chemistry, this is our biggest battle with RUclips and we are working on it constantly. If only you saw what went on behind the scenes! Yes, why not be a human calculator eh, it is one of the most important things to tame in life... spending. You are doing the right thing and your friend.... well.... For investment, we have 2 years of money out of the markets that we are drawing on at the moment, we generally have a relatively low bond holding and as such we are still mainly in equities with Vanguard all market funds. The other really important thing we are doing is not listening to what experts in investment are saying.... seriously. You listen to them and they will tell you everything and you can't work with any of it. Stay the course is what we are doing. Have you read the book "A Simple Path to Wealth" by JL Collins? I highly recommend it. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
@@2GoRoam Hi Neil and Sarah, Great minds think alike. I too have significant holdings with Vanguard - low fee index funds. I like some of what Jack Bogle had written - founder of Vanguard. I worked in banking for years at a decent level - so built up a good nest egg from the get go. I retired at 43 from banking to become a “soccer mom” to my three young kids. I then started teaching finance at a major university on a part time basis. In fact, I have taught personal finance classes to non-finance majors. So yes a bit of background but also appreciation for what you do and have to say! So again compliments! Rod
You did it! 🎉🍾🍻And had a lot of fun for the money you spent! I think I would give myself an extra 5% for inflation. Since you were under budget this year, it doesn’t really cost you and you do want to be sure you have room to enjoy your travels (as you have been!) So sorry that you got Covid-rest and take care!
Love it! I was excited I could watch your video while I ate my lunch. I always look forward to your new content. I think due to geographic arbitrage you should keep your budget as is for the next year. The first year you spend time in the US which is very expensive. You can maximize your life for less in other places (as you consistently show us). It's hard to believe you've been in Thailand for 8 weeks. Time flies. Hope your Covid cases weren't too bad.
Loved the vlog guys it’s interesting how much your travels cost 👍it’s great info thanks for sharing with us budding retired traveler’s that can’t wait to start our travels ,hope you both get well soon and keep them vlogs coming it’s all positive content 😎👍
Wow! You did it !! Excellent achievement nearly $3k saved… I know what I’d be spending that on ( hint, it just became legal in Thailand ;). What a fantastic year of travel you guys have had. Next year’s budget? Well seeing as you’re I SEA with Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia on your doorstep I’d say you’ll be spending far less. Wouldn’t be surprised to see you hitting under $40k for the year…. There’s some fantastic long term rentals down on Ko Phangan and Samui.
Hey Dave! YES! We have seen the Thai news too 😉 Yes we'll see where we go this year but if all in SEA you are absolutely right. Best wishes Neil & Sarah
Use up the 5.97% to make up for inflation. And then account for the fact that you will be "smarter" travelers then last year. I don't think your budget should change at all. Travelling "smarter" will have a huge effect on the budget in a good way. As well you spent a fair amount of time in UK/US which are more expensive. So your budget might need to reflect your planned destinations.
You can easily budget £35000 in Year 2 if you are continuing the majority of your journey in Asia. And staying in Asia is probably a good choice during the current market and economic turmoil...Inflation in SW Asia countries is still low (when compared to the UK an USA). It's a pessimistic view but I think it will get worse before it gets better, so 2022 and 2023 should be years to underspend but you can do it.
Thanks for sharing this!! Knowing what others have spent is really helpful. I am pleasantly surprised that you were able to travel for a year on less than $50K. Did this include airfare between the locations?
I hope you get well soon. I probably missed it, but did you factor all your airfare in those numbers? I remember Sara talking about some flights but don’t know if those were all.
I would just add the 5% or so under spend onto this years budget! That way your existing budget is still in place. Plus if you stay in Asia for a year you will come under budget no problem! You spent a fair bit of time in "the west" and still came under budget. Stick to Asia or South America for a couple of years, the sequence of returns risk will be practically non-existant then!
First, sorry to hear you are not well. I'm sure you will be feeling well and back at it soon. Congrats for being under budget. That is quite the accomplishment and reassuring for many that are contemplating this lifestyle, I'm sure. I feel you have lived very well on that budget. Regarding your budget for the coming year... Maybe you do not need to increase it considering you will be traveling through a less expensive part of the world? Despite inflation, you will already be experiencing more value for your money in Southeast Asia. Then again, you may be of the mindset that you would like to further increase your standard of living this year. Certainly nothing wrong with that if it falls within your budget. When we started our journey a year ago, we kept our budget artificially low as an experiment. The expectation was that we would increase it in subsequent years to get a realistic view on how increased spending impacts our perceived quality of life. However, we had a blast this past year and never felt deprived. We are now traveling through an even less expensive part of the world for the foreseeable future. As a result, we don't see a need to increase the budget. This has the added benefit of drawing less from our investments while they are down. It will be interesting to see which direction you go with your budget and the impact it has on your quality of life if any.
Hey Skip! We are just the same as you, we were keeping things artificially low for the same reasons then realised that actually, we are living it pretty large on this low budget. We can't see us increasing it (unless we go to too many craft beer places in Chiang Mai... $8 a pint!) we have found as you, that travel is very cost effective and all those trappings of life that we once needed to help us through the week, we don't need or want. Interesting isn't it! Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Great video, hope you get to full fighting fitness soon. Keep the same budget as planned, then add in your under spend to cover inflation, then have a great time :)
Hey Dean! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment again. We like the idea of adding the underspend on to cover inflation, that is a cool idea. We are working on the budget now and will share once we have our plan in place 👍 Best regards, Neil & Sarah
As always, great work! Extra brownie points awarded for giving all of this valuable information under the influence of Covid19 :-) Your "actual" expenses come in 35% higher than our "projected" budget, so we have some significant earning or pencil sharpening to do before we too go roam! It would be interesting to find out in a future video what sacrifices you might be willing to take in order to save some unicorns.
Hey Starlite! Well we have been very loose with our spending, honestly we have. Could we have done this year for 35% less? Yes we could, so don't be discouraged! Best wishes Neil & Sarah
Hey David! Thank you, but what can we do eh.... no beer?! Not sure that would be possible. Thanks for the kind words we appreciate it. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Thanks guys, that's amazing staying under $46,900 US. Very inspirational. Did that include travelling from each location to the next? I noticed the travel amounts of each country were quite low. I am assuming it didn't include travel to that country and travel to the next country.
Hey Alvaro! Really appreciate the comment, yes it did indeed. That totalled all of our spending in the second half of the year, travel between locations and insurance. Pretty good eh! Best regards, Neil & Sarah
It doesn’t look like the daily cost included your flights to the different countries. How much extra was that? I’m 56 and going to sell my house in the USA and move to mexico within next 6 mo hopefully. May continue working remotely for a bit but hope to stop working ASAP!!
You two put out very good informative info. Congrats. We are a middle age couple like yourselves from Seattle, WA USA and use AB&B coming to Europe. - I would like to know you manage to find accommodations so inexpensively? Your cost of housing on the road is remarkable. Do you stay at AB&B outside of busy areas? 1-2 star Hotels? We're coming to France and Italy on the shoulder season this year and we are averaging $160 a night for accommodations. What search parameters do you recommend? Thanks for the information. How you do so much on less than $4K a month in total cost is amazing.
Hey Mac! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! We use Airbnb a lot and if you book for 28 days or longer, there are big discounts that appear on Airbnb. We also joing facebook groups for the areas we are traveling to and find accommodation that way. Hope that helps. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
"Unicorns"!! Covid hit you hard enough to use unicorns. You can use them in more vids? The biggest surprize? Snowed in Athens!! I had no idea. Where are Mexico numbers? Maybe I missed it: How does your time in Mexico compare? TY!
Hey Tim! Really appreciate the comment as ever. Unicorns seemed a great option. We covered Mexico costs in our first half of year spending some months ago. Mexico was really cost effect, we actually went detailed into some of those costs, if you look back for videos on the cost of living in Mexico City of Queretaro, you will likely find those pretty interesting. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
A very interesting video; many thanks. I suspect I would spend a lot less than this; partly because when I was young I did a lot of hitch hiking, sleeping out, and extreme low budget travelling, and partly because I'm just naturally pretty frugal. Where I might spend more than you is that I very soon get tired of trawling the internet for the best deals on flights and accommodation etc, so could well spend more there. I think that that would be offset by the fact that I would want to spend longer time in one place and do fewer big moves. IMO the real key to success and lack of stress is to always spend less than you can afford. When I was young I remember an older experienced traveller telling me to have £1,000 and travel like I had £100. I think that's a good plan for life in general.
Hey Cornishhh! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment as ever. Yes when we were younger we would have been open for more challenge but now we are a bit more chilled too. But you are quite right, live like you don't have the money is great advice. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
I will most likely be traveling solo for most of the time. How do you think that will affect lodging? The rest will be say 40% less except transportation an uber would cost the same but train/plane tickets would be 1/2.
Hey RnG! Good question. One good thing about lodging is that you only have one person to please, so you'll have your own redlines for what you look for but they aren't multiplied by 2... We think solo travel can really be 40% cheaper if you are canny. Best wishes Neil & Sarah
Thanks both. Just wondering what your Corporate jobs had in the way in pensions for you? It appears you worked for many years in this area so there could be a sizeable amount of money waiting for you when your ten years is up? Thanks
It really depends on what countries you are traveling too. I'm in Central and South America and $50 per day is a nice Hotel/Airbnb, but it does take some research to find them.
Congratulations guys for coming in under budget.., I knew you could do it 👏🎉. I reckon stick with £35k for year 2 although will depend on where you’re planning on going 🤔! Sorry to hear you both had covid.., we too have just recovered from it - it’s really starting to go around in the UK too unfortunately! Our son travels out to Bangkok tomorrow, and is travelling for 2 months around Thailand and neighbouring countries.., Chiang Mai, islands etc.. Quick question. Have you felt safe in your time in Thailand so far? Any pieces of advice you’d pass on to someone visiting the country, ie so they don’t get ripped off or have things stolen? Thanks to you both 😀
Hey Ian! Thanks for getting in touch and we're pleased to hear you recovered well from the dreaded C word. Tips we would give is to just be sensible. Use ride-sharing rather than tuk tuk's as that is where the scams appear to start. We have seen nothing to concern us and if we had a child heading to Thailand we would be confident that they will be safe.... Tell him that if he gets drink, he has to be responsible for himself, no-one else can do that for him. He'll be fine we're sure. Best wishes Neil & Sarah
Hey Randy! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! This was the 2nd half year rundown. Mexico and the US we put in a video where we discussed the first 6 weeks of travel. Hopefully you can check that out. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
You are very frugal in my estimation. Looking forward to retirement and traveling also. Do you have international insurance costs that you are dividing monthly to get per day cost?
Hey Jodie! Indeed we do, we just break that into our daily incidental spending. We use Safety Wing and are happy with that so far 👍 Best wishes Neil & Sarah
Hope you're both feeling ok after Covid. I've been watching your videos for a while, with great interest as I'm selling my house, can't find another, so have decided to move to Montenegro for 6 months to a year. Have you considered going there? I'm only at the beginning of my research. I'm a freelancer so will be working while there (still doing my research). I think it is low cost. I need to find out how long I can stay. Turkey is my second choice as I know it fairly well, possibly Northern Cyprus. Very interesting to see your figures for your daily spend.
Hey Jo! Montenegro looks an incredible country. We have visited Croatia which was beautiful so that sounds a great place to put yourself. We have friends that recently bought an apartment in Turkey and the prices there are incredibly reasonable at the moment too. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
@@2GoRoam Thanks for the reply! Sorry I didn't reply myself sooner but work has been so busy. I'm following your journey with interest. Where you went in Mexico looked amazing. Hope you enjoy Krabi - I went about 30 years ago. Thailand is amazing. You're staying in great places. Hope I'm as lucky when I get to Montenegro. I'm going to go back over your videos that talk about tech as that'll be important to me as I still need to work. It's the logistics that need planning - banking etc so your videos are a great help. You're having an amazing journey. All the best.
❤ Hello Sarah & Neil. Wow you are the most beautiful and inspirational couple. Thank you for your gift. I would like to know out of all the places you have been to, where would you settle down if you were planning to choose a base? Which country/countries were you happiest in and felt that you could see out your retirement? And please also, which countries/continent would you run a mile from? Which is most suitable for retiring couple and which is most dog friendly? Finally do you have website or email? You guys Rock! Bless you ❤
Hey I D! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! We loved Turkey and are loving Thailand, we could settle in either of those countries. Mexico was also beautiful and we will return to give it a proper look over. So far there hasn't been a location that we haven't liked. Lets hope it stays that way! Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Hey Glenn! Yes that sounds sensible, we'll add it into the mix of what we're thinking about, thank you. We'll share with everyone once we've decided 👍 Best wishes Neil & Sarah
Ah sorry you caught the dreaded Covid 😫 and thank goodness countries have dropped the stupid testing requirements! Awesome to see your country budget roundup - congratulations on having a great time 😎 Not planning any travel soon, everyone is coming to visit me 😜 Other than petrol prices I haven’t really noticed much impact on my budget from inflation. I drive less now anyway and it’s still cheaper than UK gas 😜 For over 10 years now roughly I have been happily living on a self imposed $5k a month budget 🤷♀️ Sure I will splurge on the occasional larger purchase, but in general this has been fine for me. Helps my mortgage is 30 year fixed too 😉
@@2GoRoam yes, I think the noise from the financial news makes people anxious and they go do retail therapy 😜🤑 If you are tracking your spending regularly then you can see what is really affecting it. For instance, they keep saying meat is going up…I have no idea 🤷♀️ I budget $400 a month for groceries, but healthy wise I want less red meat anyway. All my budgets are just baselines - like you, I can spend more if I want to. If I feel like buying steak I will cause… I want steak 😍
Haha absolutely Fiona! Get that Steak when you want it! Yes, we just keep away from all the analysis, it isn't good for anyone because what can the average man in the street do. Just be on top of their own stuff, not become a macro economic genius :-)
Love the channel but such a shame you have put all the costs up in dollars there are so many American channels it’s nice to see things in pounds for a change …please use both 🙏🙏
Hey Phantom! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! You know we feel the same way. Due to Covid, we actually shot this video on friday and then I was up against it with time to get the edit completed with all the graphics and then uploaded to RUclips. If you are a regular viewer, you will see that we always share the GBP on the big round ups, so don't fear they will be back. This was our half a**ed Covid video :-) Best regards, Neil & Sarah

Wife and I love your channel! Hopefully following your footsteps in 6 years time!
Congrats guys. Its good you have some surplus as you'll need it when you come to Australia. Safe travels and hopefully your health is returning for both of you. X
Haha argh! Aus..... can we afford it?!?!
Great video good advice. I love how you break down the expenses. I to hope you get healthy soon. Your one of my favorite channels

Your budget of £35k/year is quite generous. Very informative film thank you
Been watching and following your a lovely couple hope you both feel better soon. Enjoy rest of your travel. Your 12 month budget is good.
Thanks so much! 😊

$46,000 is very reasonable. I would suggest adding 9%, conservatively, for inflation. Thanks for the details!

My darling wife and I are doing our research to go slow travelling next year and this is very exciting! Thanks to you I now know we can afford a place like Athens which I really hadn’t been considering except for very short excursions. Thanks and bless you! With love, Ken
Nice job with the budget! That's great. So sorry to hear about the Covid. Hope you're on the mend and feeling fit by now. : )

That is a lovely comment for you to make ❤️

Well done! Thank you for this level of detail.

Hey John, really cool of you to say. We really appreciate this more than you can realise.
More travel inspiration from a truly endearing couple. So glad you are taking it easy during COVID (a key to help it not linger). Looking forward to full recovery and more adventure coming soon 🌅

Hope you guys get better soon. Stay safe!
Thank you Holly!

You two look so happy & confident with the life your living. I say carry on. We are so close to where your at :)
Please take care. Sad to hear you got COVID. I had it at the beginning of this year. Stay safe and healthy. Blessings. ❤
Hey Heidi!
Really appreciate the comment, yes it is really tough isn't it. Saps all our power. Did you recover well?
Best regards,

I really hope you are both fully recovered from your COVID. Congrats on being under budget, especially with having to roll with some punches. It must really affirm your decision to live this lifestyle. Enjoy Thailand once you are recovered!!
Thanks guys! We have struggled a lot for weeks now and hope to be back on form this week.
Feel better soon!!
Hey Michael!
Very kind of you to say, we really appreciate it and you taking the time to comment.

As you say, it can be cost effective too... we like that 👍

Wishing y’all well

Cheers Wade
Neil, hope you feel better soon.. Thank you both for uploading this detailed video. Your budget and expenses are more realistic. It is very helpful for us as we are also planning but are concerned because of the current market and inflation. However, your video is reassuring. Thank you!
How do you deal emotionally with market volatility in retirement years?
Hey Jay &Nandita!
Yes we are very comfortable with costs after doing this first year.
You ask a good question which we think we'll answer visa or videos over the next couple of weeks. Happy to wait and see what we come up with?

My budget has decreased year by year, but more naturally than intentionally. Year 1 I was like TAKE MY MONEY but when I ran out of money and started working, I was alarmed at how much I could've saved! But we only live once right! Plus of course as you become more experienced you naturally spend far less
Hey David!
Really appreciate the comment as ever. It is amazing how quick the money can just go isn't it. But also we found (not quite as stealthy as you though) that in time being more prudent on spending isn't too tricky at all. You are the master of this stuff though.
*** Any viewers reading this, go check out The Tao of David channel on RUclips, he is the real deal ***

I’m surprised how much clothing you’ve had to buy! But congrats on staying under budget! WELL DONE!
I say give yourself 50,000 USD for year 2

@@2GoRoam last year was the first time I spent the entire summer in Britain. I made a note about what I learned, and when we came over in May (from Texas) to spend the summer here this time, I brought long underwear! So my strategy is to have summer and winter clothing, but I pretty much only have one of each thing! And I regularly wear a lot of layers. As you know, it’s four seasons in one day around here 😉
Happy Travels! XX Dara
Haha Yes underwear matters in the UK :-)
That's awesome, great job, I am still working out a yearly budget for permanent travel so this helps a lot.
Than you Elderp, pleased we are able to help.

Really appreciate the comment, lovely words. We are over the moon and slightly surprised to be under budget. We really didn't look at the numbers much the last couple of months, just diligently recorded what we had spent, so it was a nice surprise.

Thank you soo much for your fantastically detailed video.

Another great video. Loved the info and great graphics. Was surprised to see the costs in some areas vs others. Always great info which helps my planning to launch in 2024.
Hope you're feeling better now and back out exploring to enjoy more 🍎🦄!
Thank you Jannell!

Loved your episode this week. Hope you guys get better soon. I would say you can look into taking a vacation but....
Hello again Collin, We are actually planning one.... however sky that seems 😂🤣😂
So sorry to hear about your coming down with Covid. Kudos to your effort in producing this video. The only comment about your budget would be to consider staying longer at your chosen destination. This would minimize your expenses on flights and maybe the need to acquire more clothing items.
Hey Mike!
Thank you so much. we are considering your advice at the moment..... it is a good idea.

Thanks for sharing ❤
Best regards,
Neil & Sarah
Great video. I hope you kick Covid quickly. I am in my early 40’s but my goal when I retire in my early 50’s would be travel on probably $50-60k. Just to throw in an occasional splurge/luxury vacation week in the mix.
Hey Dara!
Very kind of you to say, we really appreciate it and you taking the time to comment. Yes that is a sensible number and gives you the ability to splurge when you see fit. We like it!

Neil & Sarah
Best regards,
Neil & Sarah
I hope you feel better soon! I think you could up your budget maybe 10% to account for inflation. Although, I think you guys could manage this years budget again if you needed to. You had some Dr visits etc this year that hopefully you won’t have next year.
Hey Felicia!
Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment as ever. We think we can manage on the same again, we will share with all once we have decided what to do... watch this space!

We are loving the fact that despite nasty inflation everywhere, the dollar is strong vs the pound right now!💪🤑
We are still suffering a bit but hoping that by the end of this week, we will be fighting fit.
Damn that dollar :-)

Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! We work hard to be in touch with our viewers as we know that leaving a comment actually takes time. So we want to reciprocate where we can. Sometimes life gets in the way, but we try to prioritise it.
We are often in countries that don't speak english and this worried us before we did this but now, it doesn't phase us, there is always a work around and people are generally very helpful and nice. Learning the odd phrase can go a long way in people looking on you warmly.
Best regards,
Neil & Sarah
I think those prices for apples and unicorns every day are great! 🤣😂
I’m so sorry to hear that you both got Covid. Please, please take it easy and take care of yourselves. The exhaustion that comes from Covid is brutal! 🫶🏻
Congratulations on being under budget for the past year! I think for all that you did, and all the unforeseen challenges that you faced, y’all did an excellent job!! 🍾🎊🎉
Looking forward to next Saturday already! 😁
Hey Lorrie!
Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! Amazing how cheaply you can pick up a unicorn these days. Yes it seems to be dragging on and Neil is still suffering pretty bad. We will get there.
Thanks for your lovely words.
Best regards,
Neil & Sarah
Hello Neil and Sarah,
Been watching your traveling, I wonder how you communicated with the Greek and Turkish? English is not widely speaking in their countries?
I sold my house and will be expat soon, so your videos really help giving an idea. Thanks a lot and keep giving us more, especially true culture shocks encountered. 💝
Hey Loan!
Really appreciate the comment, just answered this in the other comment but you will be find we are sure... Just be nice and people are nice back.
Best regards,
Neil & Sarah
Cheers, Rod
PS I would be curious to know how you are balancing investment performance in these turbulent markets.
Best regards,
Neil & Sarah
Hey DA!
Thank you! 5% more we could use as our stretch budget.... We are working on it and will share when we agree it 😃👍
Best wishes
Neil & Sarah
Hey Kimberly!
Thanks as ever for the kind comment. Pleased we had lunch with you too!
Didn't feel like 8 weeks to us either!
Best wishes
Neil & Sarah
Loved the vlog guys it’s interesting how much your travels cost 👍it’s great info thanks for sharing with us budding retired traveler’s that can’t wait to start our travels ,hope you both get well soon and keep them vlogs coming it’s all positive content 😎👍
Hey Martin!
Thank you so much, we hope we are inspiring people positively to do something similar so we love this comment!

Neil & Sarah
Hey Dave!
YES! We have seen the Thai news too 😉
Yes we'll see where we go this year but if all in SEA you are absolutely right.
Best wishes
Neil & Sarah
Use up the 5.97% to make up for inflation. And then account for the fact that you will be "smarter" travelers then last year. I don't think your budget should change at all. Travelling "smarter" will have a huge effect on the budget in a good way. As well you spent a fair amount of time in UK/US which are more expensive. So your budget might need to reflect your planned destinations.
Yes we are thinking that way too. Thanks Gordon
Love your video as allways
Hey Pernille!
Thank you so much. Appreciate you getting in touch.
Best regards,
Neil & Sarah
You can easily budget £35000 in Year 2 if you are continuing the majority of your journey in Asia. And staying in Asia is probably a good choice during the current market and economic turmoil...Inflation in SW Asia countries is still low (when compared to the UK an USA). It's a pessimistic view but I think it will get worse before it gets better, so 2022 and 2023 should be years to underspend but you can do it.
Hey Maria!
Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment as ever. Yes we are thinking just the same way.

Hey Cindy!
Ahhh yes! So it was! Thank you!
Best regards,

Thanks for sharing this!! Knowing what others have spent is really helpful. I am pleasantly surprised that you were able to travel for a year on less than $50K. Did this include airfare between the locations?
It did, it included all expenses for the year including flights and insurance.
I hope you get well soon. I probably missed it, but did you factor all your airfare in those numbers? I remember Sara talking about some flights but don’t know if those were all.
Yes we did, our expenses cover everything we spent in the year including flights and insurances.
Hey Random!
Yes are 100% right... Yes Asia helps massively with sequence of return risk eh 😃😃👍🇹🇭
Best wishes
Neil & Sarah
Get well! We are in the process of getting our vaccines for South America. Hopefully it will make a difference.
Hey Mike & Deb!
Yes, very good to do. We have each had 3 shots but there is always a risk eh.

@@2GoRoam We have had 5 and 9 to go of those recommended by the CDC. My arm is sore. It makes you realize how sick a person could get without them.
Yes it's been a scary time for sure.
Best regards,
Neil & Sarah
@@2GoRoam Very interesting indeed. $8 a pint???? Crazy. Prices for alcohol are quite high in KL as well.
Don't panic, that is just craft beer. A regular Leo is around $3.00
We are working on the budget now and will share once we have our plan in place 👍
Best regards,
Neil & Sarah
As always, great work! Extra brownie points awarded for giving all of this valuable information under the influence of Covid19 :-)
Your "actual" expenses come in 35% higher than our "projected" budget, so we have some significant earning or pencil sharpening to do before we too go roam! It would be interesting to find out in a future video what sacrifices you might be willing to take in order to save some unicorns.
Hey Starlite!
Well we have been very loose with our spending, honestly we have. Could we have done this year for 35% less? Yes we could, so don't be discouraged!
Best wishes
Neil & Sarah
Thank you! Feeling better now :-)
Good to hear :-)
Yes.. booze costs $ too. lol Helpful video. Thanks. I hope you get better soon. :)
Hey David!
Thank you, but what can we do eh.... no beer?! Not sure that would be possible. Thanks for the kind words we appreciate it.
Best regards,
Neil & Sarah
@@2GoRoam I gave up alcohol 7 years ago. It is possible .lol And an incredible $ saver. Safe travels.. I will be following! :)
Best regards,
Neil & Sarah

Well done you two! I’d say leave the budget the same and that will allow for inflation. Hope you feel better soon!
Hey Jeanie!
We are thinking much the same. Thank you for the positive comment 👍

Health and happiness to you, both. I think your expenses are quite low
Thank you Thea!
Thank you for confirming that my retirement plan is on track 😎

@@2GoRoam 8 years to go…🙃
"Unicorns"!!
Best regards,
Neil & Sarah
@@2GoRoam Unicorns ARE a great option!! You should use them whenever possible! haha. Yes, I will look for your Queretaro post. best-
A very interesting video; many thanks.

Best wishes
Neil & Sarah
Thanks both. Just wondering what your Corporate jobs had in the way in pensions for you? It appears you worked for many years in this area so there could be a sizeable amount of money waiting for you when your ten years is up? Thanks
How do you find decent accommodations for under $50 a day? I usually pay $250.
It really depends on what countries you are traveling too. I'm in Central and South America and $50 per day is a nice Hotel/Airbnb, but it does take some research to find them.
I'm betting 10% inflation the least.
We did pretty well Heidi didn't we :-)
Congratulations guys for coming in under budget.., I knew you could do it 👏🎉.

I missed the usa and Mexico?
Hey Randy!
Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! This was the 2nd half year rundown. Mexico and the US we put in a video where we discussed the first 6 weeks of travel. Hopefully you can check that out.

You are very frugal in my estimation. Looking forward to retirement and traveling also. Do you have international insurance costs that you are dividing monthly to get per day cost?
Hey Jodie!
Indeed we do, we just break that into our daily incidental spending.
We use Safety Wing and are happy with that so far 👍

@@2GoRoam Thanks for the reply! Sorry I didn't reply myself sooner but work has been so busy. I'm following your journey with interest. Where you went in Mexico looked amazing.

I will guess a new budget going forward of 8% more due to inflation for a total of $47,500.

Yes that sounds sensible, we'll add it into the mix of what we're thinking about, thank you.
We'll share with everyone once we've decided 👍

Ah sorry you caught the dreaded Covid 😫 and thank goodness countries have dropped the stupid testing requirements!
Awesome to see your country budget roundup - congratulations on having a great time 😎
Not planning any travel soon, everyone is coming to visit me 😜 Other than petrol prices I haven’t really noticed much impact on my budget from inflation. I drive less now anyway and it’s still cheaper than UK gas 😜
For over 10 years now roughly I have been happily living on a self imposed $5k a month budget 🤷♀️ Sure I will splurge on the occasional larger purchase, but in general this has been fine for me. Helps my mortgage is 30 year fixed too 😉
Hey Fiona!
Yes good point, we can all flex our lifestyle to combat parts of inflation can't we. We like that a lot 😃👍

You guys feeling ok?
Hey Matt & Taysia!
I'm doing well now but Neil is still suffering. Many others have suffered more so we are thankful.

Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! You know we feel the same way.
