Focus of Workshop: Posture, Power, Artistry, Proper Conditioning, and Resurrecting Golden Age Aspects of the Sport. It was an awesome 2 days!
For the 1 on 1 session, I worked on the flip jump because I'd been 2-footing the landing for over a decade. And it's not every day you can get tips from an olympian!
Debi's Flip Tips:
Posture... & more Posture!!! And Core!!!
3-Turn and...
Keep chin up & straight. Reach back with picking leg & REEEACH BACK with opposite arm.
Pick & Pop Up: On the takeoff Turn & LAUNCH non-picking knee upward / WHIP opposite (back) arm around & into turn direction. (For Clockwisers that's LAUNCH Right Knee up & WHIP Left Arm around to the Right.)
Rotate once in air.
Pop open & check the landing.
Don't forget Posture and Core!
Here, she observes, demonstrates, and then assists by throwing my back arm into the turn as I take off. She also demonstrates an on-ice but on-ground practice technique. Her focus here was less on the picking and vaulting and more on the force you put into launching knee up and pulling your back-arm around. The knee helps with height / arm helps with rotation. That's the gist as I remember it.
Result: I got more pop and more confident rotation. Still two-footing it but with less lean to the outside. Instant progress!! A few months later, with LOTS of help from my coach, I started landing the flip regularly in-harness. And I LOVE the feel of it! Still struggling out of harness a year later, but I've landed it a few dozen times on my own. It's a doubt / muscle memory thing (two footing it so long term).
The end screen links to a video where I try to land the flip in competition. It's two-footed, but don't care. It's a fun program that tries (keyword tries) to capture some golden age flair of the sport.
As always, I'm so grateful for these experiences, and I shall persevere!
Skate Happy!!!
How exciting! Tips from such an accomplished skater! Hopefully she’s doing well.
