I was born in 1979 and the famine in Ethiopia was the first news story that I remember taking notice of. I remember 6-year-old me asking my mom “why can’t we send food on planes?”
The first time I heard this song I remember crying partly bc it was so beautiful (my brain was like that… there’s also a Bach piece that made me cry every time I heard it) - but more importantly, I sensed that these people were trying to help. At the time I think the only one I knew who was, was Michael Jackson…. My dad liked Hall & Oates but I didn’t know what they looked like…. Oh and I think Stevie Wonder. Otherwise I didn’t know what a big deal everyone else was……… but I felt in my heart they were trying to help those people I had seen on the news.
Almost 40 years later and I still get choked up.

Also a wonderful song and worth reacting to if RUclips let’s you.

There was a second one of the newer generation but it did not sound like this first one. all of the proceed of the sale of the record went to the wonderful people of the nation of Africa. They all made sacrifices to come together to make the song because all of them were singing artists and they all were popular in the 80's and they had concerts, shows, movies and interviews. And recording the newest hits.

U know this song was made 40 years ago. To raise money. For Africa. There was a great famine in Africa. Millions upon millions died.........the news was terrible.
So. Bob Dylan from the UK.
    Asked American popsingers
    To sing free.
And in the UK....a concert was set to raise money .
The concert of queen .........is one of them.
The reason they are singing. So powafull.....is because...bob Dylan. Told them. What was going on in Africa.....how children were dying .....so they felt bad. And sang the song. With all their heart.
    Some of them were crying.
But it was bob Dylan who did this not Mj.
    Quency.Jones. ...Mj....Lionel Richie.......put the song together.

You mean the UK artist, Bob Geldof. The lead singer of the Boomtown Rats who put together Band Aid and the song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" in the UK; not the USA born Bob Dylan.
It was after the Band Aid song came out that lead to Harry Belafonte, singer/actor/activist, being inspired to organize a group of American singers to do their own song to raise money to send to Ethiopia to help out with famine relief.
Harry Belafonte took this idea to his manager who in turn got some other of clients involved. One of which was Lionel Richie who then got Quincy Jones involved and then Michael Jackson who told Lionel that he also wanted to assist in writing the song, too. So, Lionel and Michael wrote "We Are the World" while Quincy Jones produced. The recording session took place after the American Music Awards and the only requirement of the night for the artists to take part in the song was to "Leave their egos at the door".
