  • Toyota finally built their own sports car and it's pure perfection. 300 horsepower, manual transmission and all-wheel drive. An affordable, out-of-the box, track-ready hatchback. As the rest of the industry continues it's migration to electric vehicles, it's nice to see that one of the most conservative car companies has not forgotten that there are still enthusiasts out there like me.

The question I have is how long will that three cylinder motor last?

Toyota is a brand that is built on QRD (quality, reliability & dependability). I have a 25 year old Land Cruiser, but that has 8 cylinders, not 3. It's a valid question and I would hope it would be good for 200K, but that depends on how hard it's being driven. I really enjoyed it and would buy one tomorrow if I didn't have too many vehicles already. Thanks!

In the latest GR Yaris, they intentionally bashed the car to see what would break, then upgraded the components (latest model only that is only just releasing) - however that said, even in the current GR 3 cyl models, the components are quite a lot better than stock internals of other cars - the cylinder walls are extremely thick in comparison to normal 4/6/8's for example.. So I guess we'll see.

It seems to have proven itself in Europe in the GR Yaris.

Just a couple of comments - the roof isn't a 'graphic design' it's the formation of that kind of carbon fibre that makes the pattern. The pic you showed of the 86, was an MR2.. Thanks for the vid though.

Why didnt toyota equipped it with a 4 cylinder engine turbocharged instead of 3 they could have done that easily. Is that because to reduce weight?

I was at the Chicago Auto Show today and asked Toyota that question. The answer is that they already had that engine ready to go because it powers the GR Yaris, which we don't get in America. There you go!
