Our "built environment" is a both a product of our culture (or lack thereof) and a driving force to shape culture. Although I cannot point to a poll to support this point, I would assert that most people judge the architecture of modernity as lacking beauty. But at the same time, when we build our own private homes, we choose to build cheap and fast as well. Even in our western culture we have imbibed the tenets of materialism from Marxism that prohibit us from rightly prizing beauty as a priority and a good that is worth sacrificing for.
