Thank you Wendi! You make it so easy to understand. I love how you get right to the point and not put a bunch of needless bells and whistles in your video.
I'm going to start on a velvet jacket tomorrow and I think I'll try the walking foot approach. I've used that with success on a leather jacket I made last year and several silk shirts. If that fails then at least I know I have a back up with using pins. I'm sure glad I found this video before I started out. Thanks.
@babybirthingmama I use a sharp (universal) needle with woven fabric and a stretch needle if it's stretchy (like a stretch velveteen or panne velvet). Basically - the nap doesn't effect the kind of needle I choose. And I use a regular presser foot. Nothing fancy - just a blue million pins. :-)
LOL! Yep! I made a cape with red velvet. The center panel of the cape was longer, even though I had pinned it. I just didn't pin it *enough.* fortunately, however, about 4 inches had to be trimmed from the bottom so everything eventually got evened out. Now I know to put even MORE pins.

Hi, Wendy I am working with a 4 way stretch, burn out velvet that is absolutely beautiful but it keeps getting sucked under the top plate into the bobbin. I am using a stretch or microtex needle (I tried both) with my tension set to about 3-2. I changed my needles and rethreaded my machine to avail. Any advice?
I suggest two different things, either use a walking foot if you have one or start your seam 1/8 or so down from the end then backstitch but not all the way to the end of the fabric. Hope that helps.
Oof. That's a hard one. Maybe try a smaller needle? Or use a thread conditioner on it (like Thread Magic) to coat it with a slippery silicone coating to minimize drag on the fabric? The only other thing I can think of is to maybe change your throat plate. Some machines have one that has just a small hole in it - barely enough for the needle to pass through so it keeps fine fabrics from being pulled down. Good luck!
Wendi, wonderful video tip for corduroy and velvet and other napped fabrics!
I gave up working on velvet until I seen your video, thank you for keeping it simple.

I love you! The solution is so simple! A thousand hugs for you!
I know! It's crazy how many pins it takes! When I get to the point where I think I have enough - I go in and add one more between each of them. :-)
I learned that using a walking foot is very helpful and keeps the two fabric layers lined up.
It actually doesn’t specially mohair fabric
Thank you. This is just what I needed to watch.
Thank you for a great tutorial. Would a walking foot solve this problem or would I still need to pin every inch? Thank you.
A walking foot can help, but it won't do it all. You really need to pin a LOT.
Wendi Gratz thank you for your kind advice. Much appreciated🙏

Hey it was very helpful!! Can u please tell how to do cut work on velvet.
That's all I wanted to know. Thanks so much, I'm subscribed.
Thanks a lot! Would you suggest a baste stitch as well, instead of pins?
Michael Dorian Acid
I agree
Exactly what I needed!! Thank you so very much!
Absolutely. I use mine for almost everything.
Thank you! This was sooo helpful!
It's all by feel. One way feels smooth - right. The other way feels slightly rough.
Wendi, hello fron England. This is just what I needed, many thanks x
They have a velvet foot now... Or always slightly tug and pull on the bottom fabric as you sew along
What type of needle should you use with napped fabric and What type of foot do you use when sewing with napped fabrics?
Thank you!!! I was about to throw my fabric and sewing machine out the window. You saved me
Happy to help. :-)
A very useful video, but the fabric was a bit difficult to see it was too dark.
I wanted needle used on the fabric also when making quilt with Velvet and Shaneel fabric
would you recommend the walking foot attachment ?
Does 505 spray works well with velvet 🤔?
I've never used it with velvet, but I've used it with other napped fabrics and it's worked just fine. I say give it a try!
I'm glad it was helpful. :-)
@leextranjee I'm glad it was helpful!
@MissSewsItAll Thanks so much!

My machine doesn't stitch velvet can you please give me an idea
