We all should be grateful to Classical Music - Reference Recording for the excellent remastering of one of the summits of the gigantic German School of pianists that filled the XXth century with superb, highly personal, classical interpretations of the German piano composers. Those huge composers, piano players and orchestra conductors represent a cultural mainstem, an achievement of. the human race, a major step in human culture, an edifice of human creativity.

a wonderful performance showing Beethoven's development from the Mozartian style of the earlier works to the grandeur emotional power and mastery of concertos 4 and 5. A great listen with my new speakers! I played the whole five. What a trip! I loved it!
How many young people know Backhaus (1884 - 1969)? According to google : "At the time of his death, Backhaus had nearly completed his second complete Beethoven sonata cycle. All that was missing was the Hammerklavier Sonata." There is a mono recording, though. But, I still miss a stereo recording. His Emperor concerto (in this set) was the first ever LP I bought - sixty (give or take) years ago. Since then I heard many pianists playing Beethoven but Backhaus is still my most favorite pianist of all time.

Great! I'm so happy I found this wonderful recording quite by accident on You Tube. There is no better way, in my opinion than this to appreciate and learn all about Beethoven's 5 great piano concertos. Thank you.
Superb in all respects. To my ear, Backhaus played Beethoven with a perception few others have approached. There is an ease to his performance style that lends great serenity to the music.

Emil Gilels the most colorful piano sound! Vladimir Ashkenazy had the most volcano colorful piano sound for Beethoven!!
Jahrhundert. Alles ist wunderbar!
I'm in awe of the mastery of bringing this great music to an updated technical standard. Hard to hear that this has originally been analog recordings on magnetic tape. Bravo!
Very very VERY good recording, great pianist and wonderful orchestra. I was listening to another video of the same Beethoven works, but performed by some other group and it is incredible the difference that there can be between two orchestras: one just mediocre and this one, which is by many considered to be the best in the world. Absolutely insane. Next step listen in HD.
You rightly note a critical factor in the performance of concertos. The handling of the accompanyment is of crucial importance. Even great orchestras can be mismanaged in this task. It must always be in proper balance with the soloist and never at cross purposes. Some conductors have a gift for it while others, even among the all-time greats, do not. These recordings are superb in this regard, with Isserstedt and Backhaus totally on the same wavelength.
Mozart's last 7 piano concertos are the greatest in my opinion. Then I would place these 5 masterpieces next. Thank God for both of these musical titans.

Kempff and Gilels the most colorful beautiful piano sound for Beethoven! Solomon Cutner had the Best structure for Beethoven concerto no 5! Vladimir Ashkenazy had the most volcano colorful piano sound for Beethoven piano concerto no 5!!
I finally got around to listening to all 5 and this was a very pleasant, enlightening surprise. Listening on a pair of NHT tower speakers that pick out all the nuances. What an imaginative and controlled interpretation--I think I've just listened to Beethoven himself playing the piano. Can't thank you enough for your dedication to the classics and all the work you go through to upload these timeless masterpieces.
Beethoven No 1, and 3 are my favorite,,, its funny to say that since he didn't compose many peppy works like them,,, I play many of his un-composed compositions that Beethoven never composed in my head that I can't even fully play and laugh 🤠🎵✌
Can you make a video of a Gluck opera, he's extremely underrated, and there are not many good quality recordings of his operas(by the way, I absolutely love your work)
Wilhelm Backhaus is The cyborg The human machine!! The Best Beethoven piano concerto no 5 players Are really 1: Vladimir Ashkenazy ( The most colorful Volcanic piano sound Ever!!) 2: Grigory Sokolov ( The most rhythmic vital! Unbeatable vitalness!! Sokolov The most Titanic!!) 3; Wilhelm Kempff ( The most beautiful piano sound Ever!) 4: Maurizio Pollini! The Big Genius!! ) 5:Van Cliburn ( a suprise!! But Van Cliburn is Better than The stiff Arrau and The Mechanical Boring dull player Krystian Zimerman!! 6: Solomon Cutner ( The perfect structure of music!! Solomon Cutner The highest IQ points Ever for human people closer 200IQ,!!).7: Mikhail Pletnev ( The most Powerful Ever! Great, great recording! Many thanks! It is quite different from other Backhaus performance. Does it depend on new mastering? Thank you for your answer an for you channel!!!

Superb......German composer, pianist, orchestra......say no more.

Mozart's last 7 piano concertos are the greatest in my opinion. Then I would place these 5 masterpieces next. Thank God for both of these musical titans.
Happy Birthday, Ludwig. Your light shines through Heavens now.
One day, we will meet 💞❤💞💖💖💖💖💖
Genio universal en todos los tiempos!!!

:)
💎 ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL 💎

Una maravilla, una joya. ¡Gracias!
Muchas Gracias.
Beethoven No 1, and 3 are my favorite,,, its funny to say that since he didn't compose many peppy works like them,,, I play many of his un-composed compositions that Beethoven never composed in my head that I can't even fully play and laugh 🤠🎵✌
Sublime, merci.

Wow, a non-Beethoven cadenza to Concerto 3 Mvt 1. You don't see that everyday.
Whose is it, do you know? It's new to me.
@@davebogle1165 I believe it is the Carl Reinecke cadenza.

Can you make a video of a Gluck opera, he's extremely underrated, and there are not many good quality recordings of his operas(by the way, I absolutely love your work)
good idea :)
Very good thank you 🎵
Magistral !
beautiful
Maybe not "correct" by today's standards, but full of life. I prefer to many recent versions I've heard.
Certainly not 'contemporary', David, but let's leave 'correct' at the door: as you say, a very pleasant interpretation, worth enjoying 😀
And commercials every 5 minutes.....
Not at all …
Thanks for the warning but they are no longer here.

Great, great recording! Many thanks! It is quite different from other Backhaus performance. Does it depend on new mastering? Thank you for your answer an for you channel!!!
