THANKS for the oil seepage fix tip. Jake Raby is a guru for this stuff. Can't believe how pristine the internals are on your motor; it was obviously screwed together right!
Jake really is a genius and that’s why I made sure to give him credit for the mod. Of course he works on type 4 cases but after some chatting with fellow VW builders we couldn’t think of a reason not to do it on type 1 cases. This is the second one that I’ve done, first one still doesn’t sleep at all either.
Looks perfectly new! Hope you kept track of where everything was (bearings, lifters, pushrod tubes) so that everything goes in exactly the same place it was. Great tip on those little mods on the case!
I wasn’t expecting anything to be wrong but it sure is nice to visually inspect everything. Kept track of everything except for push rods and tubes. Ended up putting some one piece CB race push rod tubes and put the JayCee spring tubes on the shelf.
@@vayabroder729 all good! I do keep them in order in the valve cover but again it doesn’t matter imo because the valves all get adjusted after reassembly anyway.
Thanks for the venting tip. I guess once you get the case halves stuck back together, poking a little wire back through the gooves could clear the aviation sealant out of them. No?
Looks nice in there! Im going to do that to my 2058 even though I dont think its seeping from that area.(i did enlarge the return hole though) i also used different sealants as well on that build(curil brand) and did not like the results. I will be going back to indian head gasket shellac for the case halves, three bond 1211, ultra black and ultra copper for everything else like i did on the db engine. I also ran a single piece of floss around the outside perimeter of the case(heard that from a really old engine builder) with zero leaks/seeps and no affect on bearing clearances
Yep, all is well as I hoped for and anticipated! I haven’t tried Indian head for the case yet, I’ve tried other things and Yamabond is my go to and I’ll never use anything else. Never heard of the floss trick, I can see how that would work! Will we be seeing any update vids anytime soon?
@VWJawbreaker 3 bond is the same manufacturer from what I've heard as yamabond, kawabond ect . All my motors have been done with Indian head except for my stroker with great results it has a very thin film thickness where silicone and rtv are usually thicker(a few thou) I need to get the tripod setup sland do another video soon the time to work on the rigs is pretty scarce so when I've had a half hour here and there I just get straight to it. I think next video will have the introduction to the new rig(dad gave me his truck) and what I've done to it and the little work I've done on herbie. Man I think it's been a few months since I've done a video!
I’ve heard the same but never looked into it. I understand how busy life can be. I’ve been doing the same lately… few minutes here and there to get a few things done. It’s not always about posting a video but it is nice to share our progress with each other. Whenever you have time it would be nice to at see an update when you have time.
@VWJawbreaker I'll definitely have to do a progress report from V8Nate's Garage:) luckily I did take a few pictures along the way I can add in the vid! Noah will definitely be in the next video boy is he growing, 13 months and he's 31" tall 27 lbs! Crawling around like crazy, playing with books and toy cars and boy does he throw a fit when I let him hold the steering wheel and pull his hands away haha I think I've got a little car nut like his dad:)

Nice ! I’m glad to see it looked great! I didn’t expect to find anything wrong and was most curious about the cam and lifters from the dual HD valve springs. From the sounds of it, sounds like you take excellent care of your engine and that’s very important if we want them to last.
Looked pretty good in there. I think maybe a little detonation had gone on at some point but pretty good all in all. Love the the videos but especially motor videos. If you do any other mods be sure to share.
For some reason I’m the video it looked like discoloration on cyl 1 but it didn’t look like that in person. No other mods will be done, it’s back together and ready to rip again. If I do any others I’ll make sure to record it.
Good news. To be honestly I watched on my phone, and my 54-year-old eyes are not what they used to be. Great job! And also good to see how well a performance motor with a matched combo can live
hummmmm interesting but I'm not sold on that mod even if it was done on type 4. My books don't show a close up in that area. Why would the seal leak with the engine off anyway? Unless the seal is damaged from to much crankcase pressure. All of my engines mark there spot. hehehe
It was a stock feature on some type 4 engine cases, I think it was the latter ones that had it. Usually when that area is full of oil, it’ll seep past and mark the spot. Figured it was worth a try to see if it helps or not. One thing I did not mention on the video but if you go back and look, this case had a drainage passage below the dowel pin but noting to vent air into that area.
The hot rod vw books, don't show that upgrade, because vw did the upgrade in the late 70's on the type 4 2.0L cases only. All the issues the type 1 cases had, vw upgrade them on the later type 4 cases. The upgrade on main seal, does work well.
Thanks! Good to know. Keep us posted. What sealer did not work and what are going with on this round? By the way I was drinking and marking my spot at how nice things looked inside the engine.
@@TheEZGZ I ended up doing this kid on that 1776 I did a little while back. It’s not dripping a drop whatsoever. On this engine I ran out of my normal sealant and used the aviation permitex…. Won’t ever use that again for case halves. I normally use Yamabond and I’ll never stray from that again.
Looks good Gary, took the. Baja out for a carb test as I got the kadrons on, worked out great. Proud I got em synced up. Got a damn number 3 exhaust leak on the header though causing some pops. I tell you what, next time the 1835cc motor comes apart it’s going to be a 1968 or 2054. Lol
I have never seen that mod before. Won’t they just clog up with sealant when you put the halves back together, or worse cause a leak from case pressure. I would love more information on this. Thanks
If you are careful with your sealant it will not clog the modded area. Also, if you have that much pressure in your case that it comes out there, you have other issues.
dang G, what happened to the 1,2 side top head fins? did i miss that in a prior vid? if so, my bad. "figured that would be the case" haha puns, sometimes they work
I don’t think I covered that in a prior video. That’s the way I bought them. They were damaged from a fan exploding on my buddy’s engine when the tag wire got sucked in, wrapped around the throttle tube and revved the engine to 10k rpm. Engine only had 90 miles on it.
Thanks for showing how to modify the case to stop the oil leak issue. Hopefully the upgrade will catch on.
