Wayne Rainey was always my favorite racer out there. 20 years after watching him race for the first time, I finally got around to buying a 1975 Yamaha RD350, the sanest way I could find of experiencing a two-stroke with TZ frame geometry without getting in trouble. Thank you for having Wayne on the show and showing off this awesome project... he continues to be an inspiration to motorcyclists to this day.

    LOVE WAYNE!
I got a chance to visit with him. over dinner and watching one of the MotoAmerica races on closed-circuit TV. I was a Volunteer at one of the Races, and the TECH Inspection tent was next to Wayne's Trailer/command center and the Food Area for Track Workers. I am also 'physically limited' from a motorcycle crash -- although I was hit by a motorist, and not nearly as severe as Wayne's injuries -- but I have also continued to be Active in motorcycling and performance driving, and 'being out there' doing all that I could do, including some stuff that 'un-injured' folks my age can't do! We had a very pleasant conversation, but I had to be mindful NOT to distract him from closely watching the racers! (smile) He would talk, but never took his eyes off the screen... even to pick up his food! He would just stab at the plate until he felt there was 'something' on his fork...
I have Always Loved the "Bullet-nose" fairings, and WISH I could find one like on that Bike! Of course I would have to cut out for a headlight, but I think the rest of it would fit my Yamaha FZ1... It has the R1 engine but 're-tuned' for more mid-range street use, rather than the high RPM of a track bike... and mine has been "ECU-Flashed" with exhaust and PC5 to very close to 170 hp..!! {147rwhp} And I have done 170mph on the Road Atlanta Track... ( I won't say what I have done on the street...)
    LOVE all your Shows, JAY!

My wife and I (GF back then) met Wayne in 1982 & 1983 at Road America He won't remember, and neither should he.. In '82, he was 2nd tier to Eddie Lawson, on the Kawasaki Team. Eddie won that '82 weekend, but in 1983, Wayne and Wes Cooley were on the new, smaller 750cc bikes. Wayne won that weekend, on a GPZ 750, against all odds, against the Honda Juggernaut of Baldwin, Wise and Pietri, and he went on to win the Superbike championship that season, again, against all odds. NO ONE, other than Wayne Rainey could have pulled that off! I have an old photo, of Wayne, with my beautiful GF ( wife 2 years later), back then. :) Also, I took the California Superbike School in 1983 at Road America, and Rainey and Cooley showed up to say a few words in our class. Very memorable. Shift to today. Wow, that bike is awesome. I love the 80's race-bike look, a lot.

I get it, the Rainey/Schwantz battles are famous and they garner a lot of attention. However, if you truly know your GP history you'll recall from 1989-1993 there were 3 other protagonists who won quite often too, namely Messrs Gardner, Lawson, and Doohan. In particular, Mick Doohan had the 1992 World Championship completely sewn up, save for the broken leg at Assen. It wasn't until the final race of that year that Wayne Rainey finally caught Doohan's points lead... a lead so massive that he missed 7 races through injury and still could have won the WC at the final round.
That said, I love Wayne Rainey too. A total gentleman, supremely talented, class all the way. Indeed, the 5 guys I mentioned were all classy guys, always very professional in their appearance and the way they presented themselves.

That didn't sound like the Cross plane R1 motor. Anyway, I was parked next to an R1 the other day. It was grey and black. The owner had added a lot of carbon fiber, polished and anodized bite. It was absolutely stunning. The thing is with motorcycles, you have to see them in person to appreciate them. I bet this one off is unbelievable in it's detail standing next to it. Rainey was one of my racing heroes and an American icon. I was stationed in Europe during his time at the top. He was better known there than here at home unfortunately.

It's like car racing was in the 60s, tons of passing on every lap, and racing is based on bravery and bullishness, not the tire tactic parade laps that car racing is currently struggling with..

I miss Leno on Late Night... He never picked sides politically and was always good natured. That first 12 minutes of the Tonight Show monologue was unbeatable. Leno's standup is still the best. I remember being 6 or 7 years old back in the 90's and watching the Tonight Show on my parents bed.. Good Times..

As a kid in the 90's, the men who raced two stroke GP bike were like gods to me. All of them. Doohan, Lawson, Schwantz, Koscinski et al. Riding at 10/10ths on vicious bikes with personalities as varied as the men riding them. Ill tempered, capricious bikes that would as soon kill you as let you finish the race. The crash that ended Waynes GP career shook me to my core and affected me deeply.

the media hates motorcycles because people die riding them. If motorcycles were perceived as a "necessity" like cars, then they wouldn't care if people get hurt riding. I'm sure there are people that want to ban motorcycles because they kill people like guns.

there is this local legend of a guy in my home town of clearwater, florida. he's known only as Bullett. he runs an unmarked bicycle shop off of gulf to bay and drew st. ... he was a champion supermoto racer in the late 70s, and he rode Yoshimura bikes. he won't tell anyone his real name, and he no longer rides a motorcycle, but in a dimly lit corner of his shop, is a dusty display case, sits a very old blue ribbon, a grainy black and white photo of him in a tight hairpin turn, his knees kissing the ground as he blasts around a corner on a bike that is tilted so far over, it seems impossible to still be planted on the road, and a tattered white helmet that has seen better days, and is stained by years of sweat, blood, and the occasional tear.
he's very humble, and will help anyone who needs it, that comes into his shop. i had a bent fork on a 1969 Raleigh Grand Prix, and he was the only guy around who could properly fix it. he's very old and i haven't seen him in almost a year. i hope he's still there.
