Alice in Chains (often abbreviated as AIC) is an American rock band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1987 by guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell and drummer Sean Kinney, who later recruited bassist Mike Starr and lead vocalist Layne Staley. Starr was replaced by Mike Inez in 1993. William DuVall joined the band in 2006 as co-lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, replacing Staley, who died in 2002. The band took its name from Staley's previous group, the glam metal band Alice N' Chains.
Often associated with grunge music, Alice in Chains' sound incorporates heavy metal elements. The band is known for its distinctive vocal style, which often included the harmonized vocals between Staley and Cantrell (and later Cantrell and DuVall). Cantrell started to sing lead vocals on the 1992 acoustic EP Sap, and his role continued to grow in the following albums, making Alice in Chains a two-vocal band.
Alice in Chains rose to international fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s, along with other Seattle bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. They achieved success during the era with the albums Facelift (1990), Dirt (1992), Alice in Chains (1995), as well as the EP Jar of Flies (1994). Although never officially disbanding, Alice in Chains was plagued by extended inactivity from 1996 onward, due to Staley's substance abuse, which resulted in his death in 2002. The band regrouped in 2006, with DuVall taking over as lead vocalist full-time, and they have since released three more albums: Black Gives Way to Blue (2009), The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here (2013), and Rainier Fog (2018).
Alice in Chains have sold over 30 million records worldwide,[11] and over 14 million records in the US alone. The band has had 18 Top 10 songs on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, 5 No. 1 hits, and received 11 Grammy Award nominations. The band was ranked number 34 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock and was ranked as the 15th greatest live band by Hit Parader. Since its formation, Alice in Chains has released six studio albums, three EPs, three live albums, four compilations, two DVDs, 43 music videos, and 32 singles.

I'm the one outlier that listens to S/T more than Dirt. The big hitters are in the latter, but those grief-stricken songs (God Am, Shame In You, Frogs, Over Now, to a certain extent Sludge Factory) are absolutely genius.
Layne's vocals changed due to his condition, and instead of forcing the power he had in the Facelift/Dirt days, he started utilizing his melody/harmony layers and turning his voice into a sad saxophone. And with the individual and overall production, that grimy/sludgy atmosphere, Jerry's writing and vocals trying to juxtapose with Layne's presence - it's honestly inspiring.
(Shout-out to Mike Inez and Sean Kinney for keeping the groundwork as organic and solid as they did. Especially Inez, because it was probably chaos figuring this shit out after Starr got fired.)
It was a breathtaking experience as a teenager, and it only got better the older I got.
But that's just me. It's an album I modeled my songwriting after.

For me, “Frogs” and “Over Now,” the last two songs off of the self-titled album, gain a LOT in hindsight.
The way “Frogs” plods listlessly toward the end of its 8 minutes gives me the impression of someone just rotting away, a feeling that’s only added to by it being the last song that Layne does lead vocals for on the album.
“Over Now,” which begins with a scratchy recording of “Taps,” has Jerry on lead vocals, and its tempo is quicker and more resolute, but there’s still a sense of sadness to it. It genuinely feels like these songs predict Layne’s wasting away on heroin and Jerry having to take the reins.

    • @kolbykauffman4180
      @kolbykauffman4180 2 года назад +6

I couldn't agree more. If you read the Untold Story chapters on the studio sessions and the account of Layne's personal life in the background, it's as harrowing and haunting with or without context.
As a kid, I felt uneasy listening to Frogs.
As an adult who crawled his way out of a heroin habit, it sounds the way withdrawal feels. It feels like being abandoned in a cold swamp with little hope and a wistful longing for loved ones.

Self-titled is gold for me. It has Sludge Factory, which goes so hard in a way I can't really describe and is probably a top 3 song if theirs in my opinion. But with Over Now, Again, Grind, Brush Away, Heaven Beside You, and Frogs I can really easily listen through the whole thing, whereas even with Dirt and Jar of Flies there are parts I tend to skip though. They all have a different vibe too but I think the self-titled album is underrated.

    • @FrankHerfjord
      @FrankHerfjord 2 года назад +2

It's apples and oranges and it is not fair to compare.
Grunge is not like 50s and early 60s rock. The four big ones were in fact doing quite different things. Nirvana had a punk/pop thing going. AiC were metalheads. Soundgarden were stoner rockers, Pearl Jam were hippies. And then there's Mudhoney and the other pioneers of the scene that also did their own thing. The concept of "grunge" is even more constructed than "punk" or even "metal". "Alternative rock" doesn't even describe what was going on very well.
What was labeled as "Grunge" is in fact nothing but "Indie Rock". Rock artists that started out on small labels that actively tried to come up with something that breaks with the mainstream. And out of all the bands on the scene, Alice in Chains is the perfect example because they started out going with the mainstream. But neither of these bands actually identified themselves as part of a "scene".
Which is very different to american punk rock, thrash metal and so on. The idea of "grunge" is a media conception that no band from the scene can or should identify themselves with. I believe it was Layne that said something like "what the hell is grunge? It sounds like something I want to wipe off my boots".

I would put Black Gives Way to Blue much higher than the other two most recent albums. I think Layne's death still hangs over the band on the first release with DuVall, but in a way that makes the album stronger in a sad way. There is a sense of both mourning and attempting to move on. Kinda surprised you guys came down so hard on TDPDH? It's not great, but there are a handful of tracks I go back to every now and then. Phantom Limb is one of my favorite AIC songs, honestly. Super underrated deep cut, and the album as a whole is at least a soft bronze imo.
Rainier Fog would probs be my aluminum pick, but maybe I need to listen to it again idk
    Solid list otherwise.

I do like this one a lot. My favorite of the new lineup. And this certainly is a hell of a lot better than what the other grunge bands were doing at that time. Soundgarden's come back is forgettable and if you wanna talk about trash albums.... PJ's Lightning Bolt is hot garbage

    My rating:
Gold: Facelift, Dirt, Jar of Flies, Tripod, MTV Unplugged, Rainier Fog (please don't crucify lol)
Silver: Sap, Black Gives Way to Blue, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here
I love AiC and at first I didn't like BGWTB at all, except Acid Bubble and When the sun rose again, but all of their records slowly grew on me. I can't remember how many times I've heard an Alice tune that I didn't like before but at that moment I did, so then I had to re-listen everything to see if there are more songs that I now like.
I've put Rainier Fog so high because to me it doesn't have a bad/boring song. Not one. Maybe has beautiful harmonization, Drone is just psychedelic, Fly is so relaxing and it hits very well after Red Giant (try this: Listen to the end of Red Giant and immediately follow it up with Fly, great transition). Every song is just great.

. Idk why but honestly the self-title kind of did hit me harder than anything off Dirt really. Don't get me wrong, I love Dirt, Down in A Hole, and Them Bones, and even the title track, which are all SS tier. But there's something about the self-title, that just hit me correctly and came in at the perfect time of my life. It's def in my top 5 albums, honestly at this point maybe even top 3 albums of all time. I can see why some may not like it cause it can get *very* dark, even by Grunge and Alice in Chains standards, but for me, it just works.

I agree with most choices but Black Gives Way to Blue is a solid silver to me. Even some of the not-so-memorable songs work well as a part of the tracklist and there are some outstanding moments. All Secrets Known is an epic opening track that couldn't be placed anywhere else on the album, A Looking in View is one of the heaviest AiC tracks and it's a great metal song with guitars driving the package. Also the closer is one of their better songs and I think it's touching and catchy.
I know The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here isn't so great but I'd still place it on bronze maybe, I like some of the stronger songs so much and I've played them a lot but it's very polarized because honestly like 5 of the 12 songs on the album are so forgettable that I have no memory of a single note on them as I'm writing this hehe...

have to disagree with Crash - I think Facelift stays strong throughout the whole album. In fact, Real Thing is probably my favorite song on the whole album. Confusion is probably the whole song that falls off a little and it's still a banger. Gold 100%. Also fail to mention all the great songs on Self-titled outside of the ones played on the radio. God Am, Sludge Factory, Brush Away, Shame In You, Over Now, hello? Do we not listen to full albums? They mention Heaven Beside You, Again and Grind several times but nothing else, lol. Self-titled definitely hits you just as hard as DIRT if you care for the bandmates personal history and lyrical content.

To the 'boring' point, I hear you. The main thing I think is missing from the Duval records, especially Devil/Dinos, is1-2 more uptempo numbers. They're not a thrash band, I'm not asking for that.
But they need a couple in the tempo of We Die Young, Them Bones, or at least Again. Imagine splitting the record in half, like on vinyl or cassette. You need one of those faster paced tunes on each side, to make for better dynamics and flow of the record as a whole. Check My Brain and Fade Away kind of touch upon that tempo, but not quite. Those are fine, but each of those records would have been so much better with just one more tune of that pace or faster. Devil/Dinos needs two added.

Black Gives way to Blue is a standout comeback album, to me is a saled silver, almost gold.
The Devil put a Dinosaur Here is also a solid follow up (and a very underrated album in general), with a great title track, solid heavy tracks like Pretty Done, Stone, Lab Monkey, Breath on a Window, Choke and fantastic songs like Phantom Limb and Hung on a Hook, is def a more sludgier, darker and heavier album than Black gives way to Blue but still have that grunge feeling and a consistent songwriting.
Their weakest of the new era is Rainier Fog, wich is not a bad album but is not memorable as their previous.
