In cloudy New York, two solitudes meet.
Elizabeth is a divorced art gallery manager, John is a stock market player. Passion flares up between them, and at first everything seems fine - but then the oddities begin.
John becomes harsh, he manipulates his partner and often overplays, causing her pain. In the end, Elizabeth breaks down and leaves.
Why did the characters get together - and why did they break up? After all, they loved each other. What's wrong with them? The creators of the film gave an answer to this question, you just need to look carefully.

This is an extremely intelligent and astute review of the film, its characters, the relationships between them, the psychological motivations of each of them, and it is a profound examination of the various modern archetypes that people embody/play out in real life. Hardly anyone looks at the deeper layers of this movie. Your doing so is much appreciated. Thank you.
I appreciate your feedback, thanks.
Cannot agree more with you. It is a wonderful and deep analysis
Wow. I thought I had picked up on the layers of this movie, but there are clearly so many more nuances that I missed. The imagery of the fish, the cat and mouse, the prone figure in the painting...beautifully shown in this review. I appreciate how you compare the movie with the book as well (didn't even know it was based on a book). Well done, my friend. Well done!
Whoa! Fantastic assessment! The best I've heard on this film. I've always been drawn to this film. I have much in common with Elizabeth. I'm 45 and a hermit now. I had a relationship, long ago, with a man like John. You are spot on in character analysis. Thanks for taking the time to do this video.
I find the last scene very symbolic. Elizabeth walking away, crying, occasionally looking back, but not stopping. While she is surrounded by people at one point, she's alone in a crowd. I think that was intended to show that Elizabeth can build connections again and rebuild her life if she chooses to. John, on the other hand, is alone in his apartment, framed by bare walls, to convey how empty his life is. When he realizes that Elizabeth isn't coming back, there's that subtle but telling expression on his face when he comes to the realization that he lost the woman he loved, the person with whom he had the closest relationship in his life is just . . . . so sad. I think the fact that he didn't go after her when she left is proof that he did love her. He was finally giving up power and control, and respecting her decision even though he hoped she would come back.
A great analysis. You should continue, because sometimes it's hard to find something of quality about movies. Reviews sometimes just points to the taste of the reviewer. But this is so much more. You are in the level of the Nerd Writer with your vision. At least for me.
Beautiful. Thank you.
The best analysis I've ever seen about this film. I highly recommend your video to other viewers. Thank you Nikolai!
A whole movie about a couple who could've for all intents and purposes, been happy and loved each other, but they had intimacy issues, that were actually intensified by sex, which is supposed to increase intimacy,... when done right.. So true of many people.
This was incredibly insightful! Keep making these movie reviews. They’re fantastic.
What a thorough and articulate account of the story and its subtones. Your recognition of the symbolism is very accurate, and although I felt their impact while watching the movie, I didn't understand why. Thanks for making this insightful and sensitive video exploring the deeper meanings of this film.
Thank you for supportive feedback :)
A very well spoken and written essay on of one the most under appreciated of all time; a film one sees over and over again to try to grasp shreds of reality into ther own lives.
This deserves a lot more views.
Thanks. Well, you can share it :)
Yes today's youth is reeling with 50 shades of grey as a joke. Everyone seems to think the BD lifestyle is for them without knowing the repercussions. Thank you for this video.
@@carefulviewer-9887 The way you comment the movie is quite uniq and one can almost say that you identifi in it. I can say that Brrain Farri's song "slave to love" just fits perfectly in the movie. Don't you agree? I would apreciate if YOU would explain another movie that I find as nice this one :"WILD ORCHID with Mickey Rourke and Carre Otis..... Thank's in advance.......You have a sweet voice.....
Outstanding analysis! Realty enjoyed it. You hit on every level perfectly. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.
This is one of the most impressive analysis and explanations I've ever seen. Your eye to detail is amazing, please continue making videos about seemingly forgotten movies. I very much enjoyed the video.
Also I dont't know if I should celebrate or not, that I was in a relationship with a similar man. Never quite mature enough, yet charming, an abundance of chemistry and passion, a lot of games etc. Of course it did not end happily. At this point I'm not sure if it's better to have experienced it and lost it, or to never have experienced it at all.
Greetings from a Serb in Sweden!
Been there too . Better that you did ! Now we see it coming - now we are warned - it is a price worrh paying - future proof - and we keep the good sex memories too 😉 of course I can say it now after thousands of dollars of therapy and years after close-up 😂
Thank you for this analysis. I have watched so many imes his movie and never looked for the deeper meaning of it.
This is so beautifully explained!Amazing!
Thanks
Great review of the movie 9 1/2 weeks..
Just to remind all of us that thousands of Elizabeth and John all around the world are going through their own 9 1/2 weeks in this exactly moment..
I still wonder in all those years..
Is Ingeborg Day the *Real*
Elizabeth Mc Graw from the movie
9 1/2 weeks..?
💕🍓🍒🥂🍾💔👫
True! Thanks.
This is discourse analysis as applied in analysing films. For newcomers to the method, this video is impressive. I like it.
I'd say it''s wider than discourse analysis. Primarily it's psychological analysis of characters, of how they were created; and also of creators' techniques.
Incredible analysis, thank you
Great job! Thank you
This is amazing insight to one of my favorite movies of all time. I see myself in Kim Basinger's character as I am drawn to men like Mickey Rouke's character. Thank you for posting.
Wow this was an absolutely amazingly well done explanation. I can’t thank you enough :)
Many thanks to you, Charlie :)
Very good work, there is indeed a lot of hidden meaning in this film. You really did an excellent analysis and I am waiting for more. Great work you deserve more viewers.
Thanks) Well, you could share it on Facebook, for example.
What an eloquent and deep explanation.
Well done! Thanks 😊
Wow!!!! What a great analysis! Bravo!!!!!
Thank you so much!
Sehr gute Zusammenfassung und Analyse des Film. Vielen Dank für die Mühe 🤗❤👍
Mann!! You are god sent - your insight to the movie is a gift to us all ever experiencing similar relationships
For decades missed watching the movie again and after it ended I was shocked - it showed so much of my past relationships but I could not get to the psychological thread of it - you give such a relief to me going through all THE LEVELS of it
Thank you
Thank you
THANK YOU 🙏
I very much enjoyed this and was sorry to see it come to an end. Inexplicably, when it concluded, I felt a vague sense of loss. Beautifully done. Thank you.
Adriane Lyne was an incredible director.
True.
I loved it!
Thanks
Great stuff, thank u!!
Thank you. Subscribe - I am going to analyze many interesting films.
I read the book many, many years ago...I still recall how devastated I felt when I finished reading it. I can still feel it today. This movie makes me cry every time I watch it.
@@lisaelliott8358 yes. it's deeper than it seems at first sight.
Ive always been fascinated by this film. Im astounded that so many people I mention it to dont like it at all. The film is a work of art and shot so stylishly. I really like the work of Adrian lynn. Flashdance etc . He very much captures the 80s vibe. At first sight his movies appear surface which can fool viewers as they mean far more on a deeper level. This analaysis is incredible and brings a lot to light. Im not sure about the part where John offers her a holiday though .maybe i misunderstood the meaning or missed that bit.
Most people don't take art deeply. Basically, humanity produces light entertainment content, which is widely in demand. When I try to discuss serious movies and books with non-specialists, I often encounter this reaction: don't make it up, there's nothing there, sometimes a banana is just a banana, haha!
But still, real art gives anyone the opportunity to rise above this level and learn to see more, to think deeper.
As for the holiday - well, it's the same technique that the director uses all the time. He encoded messages through images and separate words. Why else would John let us see the disc cover with Billy Holliday's name on it so clearly?
@@carefulviewer-9887 yes i understand now. he had a lot trouble expressing himself . Wow great insight. thanks
@@carefulviewer-9887 yes i agree but just the other day on set i was hanging out with a Shakespearian actor who gave me a similar reaction . He didnt like the film and gave surface reaction to it. Oh well we cant all like the same things i guess.
Well, John did have a trouble expressing himself, you are right.
But I meant a hidden message from the director, not from he character. It means: John promises to give Elizabeth a holiday - but in fact he just gives her a piece of the holiday, and then he hurts her.
Great review ))
This is the smartest review I’ve ever seen.
Such a great job!! Thank you so much for this amazing work. I only have one question: at the end he tells her something like that he had met many women but she was special.
Do you think he was telling the truth or it was just another way to play with her feelings?
I believe he told the truth. He did love her, and they could become a good loving couple after serious psychological therapy. Many thanks for your words.
Thank you for your response :)
This was awesome subscribed
Me gusto la explicacion
Enjoyed the review a lot

I haven't viewed this movie since adolescence, but the message was one that I needed today. Fate brought me to you. Thank you for your thoughtful and enlightened perspective.
You know, I also haven't seen it for decades. But suddenly last year I woke up in the morning thinking about this movie, and I understood its plot completely, though I never thought about it. This may sound queer, but it is true.
@@carefulviewer-9887 It's amazing how strokes of insight hit us us at certain times of our lives. I am thankful for your contribution, I couldn't have found it at a better time.
I didn't think i would ever find a person who was able to analyze this film on an artistic level. It is both a pleasure and an honor to hear your thoughts on both film and book. I think that the sexuality keeps most viewers and critics from seeing the underlying artistry.
I know it's an overdone comparison, but i wonder about your thoughts about the Fifty Shades of Grey series, also both books and films. The books I found a literary masterpiece, the films were reasonably respectful adaptations but not as complex and layered as either the books or as Nine and a half Weeks. I shall have to check if you have already commented on any of these. Much appreciation and respect for your views.
Thanks for your kind words. Well, I watched FSG with little interest and found it rather commercial, so I never intended to read the book. Sorry :)
Nine and a half Weeks was, agreed, brilliant cinematography, and fraught with evocative symbolism. And it wasn't afraid to go in a different direction from the book. FSG films were , probably for reasons of commercialism, sticking closer to the plot mapped out by the books, and didn't explore much new territory. But the books are a heavily symbolic depiction of God's grace and redemption...and it wouldn't show up in a film, any more than, say, Moby Dick, or The Scarlet Letter, can be anything but a plot-driven vehicle on the screen. But I will check out your other videos. Again, many thanks for your generous reply.
Great analyzing the film. I enjoyed it! Love this movie.
Brilliant 👏
Thanks
I didn´t realize that the movie is so demanding. Until now it has mainly appeared like a superficial clip show to me.
Bardzo ładny film .Kiedyś go oglądam .☀️
Interesting!!!
Really good.
Grandios movie 🎼🎥😍😊
Por favor, coloque legendas em português, grato!!!
I always wondered why when she was looking at Farnsworth she decided then it was over.
She thought that solitude was the only escape from pain. Which was not true, of course.
Great review of a complicated picture, but i will also point out the fact that abuse, dominant rough play, suspense and adventure arouse and terribly attract A LOT of women. When done by a right person of course, they contribute to great seduction and control. Depiction of such dynamics is the main factor behind the film's success and its perception as a vulgar chick flick, somewhat similar to 50 shades of Grey and Twilight.
Well, Elizabeth in this film doesn't seem to be attracted by John's dominant rough play. Remember the scene when he demanded her to crawl and pick up the banknotes. She refused.
@@carefulviewer-9887 True, eventually he goes over the top, unlike in other mentioned movies where dominant men get tamed by female protagonists, his act is absolutely more careless, sadistic and degrading. It's probably more realistic too.
