    My dad was a Marine in the 60s, and he was trained to be a firefighter on aircraft carriers. He didn’t choose this job. It’s what was assigned to him. He said the first thing they had to do was watch a film on how to amputate a pilot’s leg if he was stuck in a burning aircraft. Thankfully he never had to do this. I can’t even imagine. 😮

    Think about that netting for a sec: it has to stop a 35,000 pound aircraft traveling at triple digits. No wonder you got one use out of them. Impressive

    I thought this would be about the South Vietnamese guy who stole the plane for his family to escape. Maj. Buang-Ly was his name as he contacted the carrier. Amazing what they did for him.

      Only the US military could afford dumping tens of millions worth of military hardware into the ocean. Thankfully most of those planes/helis were South Vietnamese, and not US owned.

    y'all talking about how insane early carriers were reminded me of how when taking off and landing they had to orient the carriers in the direction of the wind. The planes were just powerful enough to get airborne with the wind at their backs, but if heading into the wind they'd stall on takeoff. This became a huge tactical problem as the carrier would have to move in one direction for minutes on end to launch a full wing leaving it open to being attacked as it couldn't turn off course unless during evasive maneuvers in which it couldn't launch defender aircraft.

      @Karle94 Год назад +2

      Some early carrier planes were so small and light, namely the scout and fighter aircraft, that ships such as the Lexington, as shown in the b&w videos were so fast (34kts) that when they went into the wind people had to hold the planes down so they didn't take off un-powered.

    • @sc1338
      @sc1338 Год назад +6

      Actually you’d want to take off into the wind… aircraft don’t care about ground speed the only need air over the wings.

    I was on watch in the Combat Information Center of the USS Antietam CG 54 performing plane guard duty 2,000 yards astern of the USS Carl Vinson in the Persian Gulf. An FA 18 Hornet lost engine power and the aviator ejected into the water . We turned toward the man overboard for a boat recovery, but the plane guard helo recovered him before we arrived . Before helos were used for pilot recovery destroyers picked up downed aviators . The carrier would trade the pilot for the destroyer's crew with a load of ice cream .

    Another reason you'd want the aircraft to go full throttle is to minimize the chance of the aircraft crashing into the flight deck. Less likely to drift into the flight deck at full throttle. Going full speed into the net is safer than going a quarter speed into the flight deck.

    They know if the hook isn’t working because there is communication between pilot and ground crew. Those hard phones and mics you see on the ground crew, that’s them communicating. If I’m wrong, please correct me.😁

    Thumb Up #595! 👍 Thanks for the fun, DVR! 🎬🎉🎊🤠🤓😎🖖🙏✌️
    Notes: In the original movie version of, "Midway", they used stock footage film of real crashes on deck. In the recent remake though, to be different, we see what happens when there isn't enough wind to help airplanes gain lift. One drops off the flight deck and the ship collides with it, pushing it under the water!
    In, "The Final Countdown", after passing through the time portal, I think that we were shown them using a crash barrier. 🤔
    In, "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier", we get to see the, Starship & Shuttlecraft, version of a crash landing. But, instead of something futuristic, they used the same rigging that we just saw in the video! 😁
