Great evaluation! I really appreciate your in-depth analysis. I too struggled with the CG on this bird and kept thinking I was doing something wrong as I was adding so much weight with a 3S battery. Your analysis convinced me to add whatever weight is necessary and now the plane flies like a dream! Going forward I'll only use the 4S batteries as I'm flying full throttle most of the time. Keep up the good work! Love your videos.
Hi Chris just started watching you reviews, I bought a second Horizon P47 and took it out for my first flight. You were spot on with the CG as Im using a 3 cell 2200 battery a real bugger to get the plane to fly level , I wished I had watch your review before I flew it . Your review was very helpful , so 3 ounces of weight will be added , not a fan of the receiver not nearly as flexible as the FRsky receiver. I will be switching the stabilizing system off as I don't need it. Thanks for a very helpful review , you got straight to the point no mindless keep the good work up
I really enjoy your videos and analysis and you have impressive pilot skills. I recently purchased one of these as I like the airplane in general and the 1.2 size is just right for transport. I'll be going 4S as well and might even get the airbrush out and try some weathering as well. Keep up the good work.
Hey thanks for the review, all very interesting information. I like your slightly different approach to making such videos and it's nice to see them with a different slant to them over most of the other reviews. Keep up the good work, you have a new subscriber. Cheers!
I'd Like to update people with any problems with the bind process into SAFE Select mode. If you are having trouble enabling SAFE and are also having trouble assigning a switch via the sticks inward and toggle switch 5x way. I found that at least for 8 channels you can go into the channel assign menu to channel input config and assign AUX2 to whatever switch you want and it will enable SAFE that way.
Thank you! I haven't pursued the airbrush vid on the P-47 since I ended up covering this technique as well as some wash techniques as a part of my foam kit bashing series: ruclips.net/video/d-tocRK8CXc/видео.html That said, I plan to put together another weathering video with even more techniques that I like to use.
You know, the gear are all generally the same. I personally haven’t had any issues with them. I do think that they’re generally more reliable now than they used to be though.
hey its mark again...i still have the issue of barrel rolling to the left...im running a dx6e..can u tell me what flight mode im supposed to be on...also im a running8 channel receiver...its in 2,4...center and 1,3
To me the tornado graphic reminds me of Jeff Dunham's Jose character (Jalpeno on stick). I like the fact that it will easily fly off grass and I have hanger space for it.
Hi. Have you had the opportunity to build and fly the Eflite P51 D Mustang? If so, which was a better flyer? I'm looking to move up to a Warbird. Currently, I'm flying a Valiant and a Turbo Timber. Thanks for the video.
I've not flown the P-51 unfortunately, but I have handled it and it's a nicely done airplane. Looks really nice. I'd expect it to fly similarly to the P-47 truthfully. I don't think you could go wrong with either one.
Cool, sounds like you got it sorted. It’s important to ensure all of the surfaces are aligned well, especially for a maiden. Otherwise, you can run into these things.
The P47 was also a heavily armored plane which allowed continued operation after being hit by gunfire, which payed off but did slow the plane down a bit, a trade off. I have wondered about the weight. The real plane came in at 10,000 lbs empty up to 17,500 loaded. Would a Moki 250 cc be enough to power this plane if it were made of a light metal instead of foam and plastic?
Great review! Would you recommend this as a transition/next stage plane for me...going from Delta Ray to Apprentice S 15e to Opterra to a warbird? I kinda like the SAFE especially when I'm in over my head.
This P-47 is a great next level airplane for sure and with the SAFE it will help keep you from getting into trouble. That said, the key to effectively using SAFE though is to not solely rely on it as SAFE does affect the feel of the airplane flying around. So, use it for those critical moments like takeoff and landing maybe and then consider not using it when flying around. You can always flip it on if you get into trouble. Oh, and this airplane is quite high performance on 4s, so just keep that in mind. It would allow you to work up to a higher performance aircraft.
Hi. I received mine today and I'm excited to fly it tomorrow. I noticed that you've used 4 cell batteries. Has eFlite changed their recommended battery? The manual only lists 3 cell as an acceptable battery. You've answered several of my questions so I want to thank you.
Eflite hasn’t changed their recommendation necessarily, but when they sent me this airplane, they sent me both 3s and 4s packs. So that gives you an idea of their thoughts on that.
Afternoon quick question considering I’m a new pilot and will be assembling a few of my Eflite warbirds they all are 1.2m the T-28 Trojan, P-47 Razorback and the P-51 Mustang. I see they have provided the D/R however no Expo Rates, once again I’m a beginner pilot and want to set up the High, Mid and low D/R and Expos in my NX radio for the Maiden what setting would you suggest? Thanks 🤙🏽
I’d recommend setting up my recommended throws from this video as your mid rates and then setting up 15% higher and lower. That being said, I don’t recall what the percentages were in the setup for this model. So, you may find what I have is set for 100%. If that’s the case, then set them as your high rates and set two lower rates for options.
The RC Geek On most planes today especially the war birds you will you all 6 Chanel's ailerons , rudder ,elevator throttle ,flaps ,gear what switch do you add safe to if you are on a dx6
@@boss2234 ok, I understand. I would recommend setting safe to your retract channel such that with gear down, safe is on and gear up safe is off. If you want safe on, the fly with the gear down, etc. This way, it provides the greatest level of protection during the most critical phases of flight (takeoff and landing).
Yes, you can assign safe to any channel 5-9, so you'd have to have SAFE combined with another function. I'd recommend assigning it to the gear switch, so gear down safe on, gear up safe off.
How did it taxi on the ground in a turn? I know it’s been a while since you made this video so I don’t expect you to remember. The reason I ask is because I own one, and it seems to make wide turns for a tail dragger
Taxi was no problem. Are you using SAFE? That tends to limit some of the travel. Otherwise, try binding with SAFE on and then assign SAFE to a switch and then turn SAFE off that way. Some of the SAFE airplanes seem to limit the rudder travel when binding with SAFE off, but when turning SAFE off with a switch, it'll give you more travel. I've seen that on a couple models.
Come to think of it I haven’t tried that. I have turned the rates on high but I don’t think I’ve turned the SAFE off with it on the ground. I’m still a beginner and this is only my 2nd warbird, so I have SAFE assigned to a switch to help me on landings. I’ll try that, thanks!
It’s a pity the tornado looks a bit like Mr Hanky ! I’m probably going to pull the trigger on this anyway and maybe do it in another scheme, but they’ve done such a nice job I expect I’ll just leave it alone. Glad to know I’m not the only one who saw it right off.😂 I run 4S in my other E-flite stuff and just don’t run WOT much and they do just fine. Great video, thanks.🤙🏻 Was going to ask about the weathering but you answered at the end: nice job. Subscribed
Thanks! Yeah, the Mr Hanky tornado is actually scale though, pretty funny though, haha! This is a real winner from E-flite, especially on 4 cells. Flies so nice!
I guess Trey and Matt weren’t even a glimmer in their daddy’s eyes back then. Pretty sure someone in the ground crew would have called it an angry turd though.🤣
Happy New Years , Amazing bird I just picked up the T-28 Trojan and the P-47 Razor Back and plan on up grading my Battery Pack to 4s and 70 amp receiver, I noted all the specifications you mentioned for better performance however when I looked under Spektrum electronics selection the specifications you mentioned aren’t provided thru Spektrum. So my question is which Spektrum 4s pack, Spektrum receiver should I throw in my warbirds for peak performance?
I believe you're making reference to the speed controller and not the receiver, correct? The Spektrum Smart 4s 3200 pack is a good one (bit.ly/Smt4s3200) and the Smart 80 amp ESC as well (bit.ly/SpkAvian80).
@@Thercgeek hey it’s me the“ Rookie “ I received both of my Spektrum 80amp ESC today and was wondering, in order for me to install the ESC would I need to order any additional connectors or plugs for the motor, receivers or Battery packs to install the ESC. I have the Horizon 1.2m T-28 Trojan and the P-47 Razor Back BNF. Hopefully I’m making sense I just started flying last month this is new language for me. Thanks !!!!!
You may need some connectors to connect the motor and speed control, but I’m not certain. Otherwise they come setup with the ic5 connector for the flight pack.
@@Thercgeek ok gotcha guess I’ll open the boxes and check, was trying not to open them being that I’m unable to fly them for sometime 😅🥺😅 Thanks again !!!!
Thanks. I get to SD from time to time but alas do not travel with a plane and TX. BTW I got the P47 for Christmas... haven’t assembled it yet... was amazed when you said it only took a few mins to be flight ready!
Hi there and thanks for a great video presentation. I really cant decide on which two eflite planes to buy? Either the AT-6 Texan or the P47 Razorback 1.2. I know they both fly well but in your humble opinion which one would you choose? Kind regards, Aidan here in Ireland.
Thanks! In the air, both fly fantastically. The ground handling is better with the p47. However, on 3cells the t6 has better overall performance than the p47. The 47 really needs 4 cells to really fly the way it should.
@@Thercgeek Hi there and thanks for your advice. Ive got no 4s lipos at present but i do have a large quanity of 3s 2200 batteries so i think i may go for the AT-6. Ive been flying model aircraft since 1986 and in all of those 32 years most of my planes are engine powered. It has just been in the last couple of years that ive started flying electric and i enjoy it as it gets me in the air a lot quicker , I still love the sound of a four stroke engine though. My favourite electric plane is the Multiplex Twinstar but ive never owned an Eflite model, so this will be my first. I really love warbirds and my favourite is a B-17 that i bought recently which has a wingspan of 74 inches. The Eflite P47 appeals to me more but as you say its more suited to 4s than 3s and also the ground handling is better with the AT-6. So i think i will get the TEXAN. Thanks for all your help and keep producing those great videos. Kind regards and a happy and healthy 2019 from Aidan in Ireland.
What I meant to say was the ground handling is better with the p47 vs the t-6. The t-6 has narrow gear which can result in scraped wingtips. With your experience, I’m sure you’ll do fine with either one.
@@Thercgeek Ah many thanks, i took you up wrong. I think then i will definately go for the P47 as ground handling is very important to me . The grass on our club flying field is always kept nice and short so there shouldnt be any problems. I also fly a hangar 9 40 size P-51 Mustang with a two stroke engine. Ive had that plane since 2011 and its a great flyer. This Eflite P-47 Thunderbolt will be the first ive ever had so im really looking forward to adding it to my Hangar. Your advice has been very much appreciated and i really enjoy the videos you produce. Keep up the good work and many happy landings for you in 2019. Kind regards from Aidan in Ireland.
Awesome vid as always, I'm plan on buying this plane as my first war bird....I utterly trust your experience and skill but why would Horizon make a plane that isn't balanced properly and you have to add weights to the battery? or is this a common thing? The 3S battery I'm thinking to use is 80g lighter, than your E-flight 3S, would I have to use more weights?
Thank you! I think it'll be a great choice as a first warbird, it's a fantastic flyer! Regarding the battery, CG is CG, so if you're using a lighter pack, then I would expect you'll need to add additional weight to get the CG where it needs to be. With scale airplanes, the shape is predetermined, so that constrains things a bit (nose weight in a warbird is not uncommon). In the case of electrics, we have the option to make that weight functional with higher capacity should we choose. That said, I'd highly recommend 4s, the airplane flies so much better with it, gets longer flight times, and doesn't require nearly as much nose weight.
Hello great video question do you recommend this plane for a beginner ? I have experience with racing off road rc but never planes and was thinking on getting a dx6e and this plane as my first plane that was if I want to get more planes I have a good transmitter to start with non rtr one what you think?
Truthfully, this is a better second airplane than first. Though, I suppose with safe, it's probably manageable. I think that the e-flite valiant is a little better suited as a first airplane. Then, move up to the P-47.
I’ve not flown the 1.2m mustang, so can’t really say but I’d say it boils down to which you like the looks of better. The p47 is a great airplane, I don’t think you can go wrong with that one.
@@Thercgeek i have flown the carbon cub s2 on land and floats, the t-28 1.1m and i kind of crashed it but not bad, i’ve also flown the cherokee 1.3m but i’m not the best at flying it. i have flown the cherokee out of safe too
Well, you have some decent experience which helps. The p47 is a very honest flyer with good ground handling, but quite high performance on 4s. So, keep that in mind and throttle back if it’s going too quick for you.
I used a 4s 3200 in the airplane. The Spektrum Smart packs (bit.ly/Sm4s3200) are really good or Roaring Top batteries as well. I've been using both and really like them a lot.
Well, it’s hard to assess based on your description. Tail drafters need right rudder on takeoff to stay straight down the runway. Are you giving it any rudder. Do you have the spektrum as3x receiver in yours? When youre flying the airplane does it fly straight and level hands off?
It does sound out of trim to me. Check the rigging of the surfaces both ailerons and flaps. They should be equal left to right in the neutral position. If they are equal and it still rolls left, then add some right trim a little at a time.
I've been flying mine on 4cells with the stock ESC and haven't had any issues. For longevity it's probably best to upgrade, but I haven't to this point.
You need another channel on you system to have safe select and the retracts on seperate channels. I'd recommend having safe select on the same switch as your retracts so then you can have it on with the gear down and off with the gear up. It'll always be on during takeoff and landing.
Yes they discontinued this plane and I was looking for bombs to put in LX B-25. I can fit six in it or one Quanum Bomb filled with baby powder 🤣😂🤣😂👍🏻✌🏻🖖🏻
I have my timer set to 5 minutes and typically do a couple touch and goes once it goes off. So total time is over 6 minutes pretty easily and that's flying the airplane pretty hard.
I have my timer set for around 5 minutes I think. What I found was that the airplane got longer flight times on 4cells than 3cells as 3cells required more power for cruising.
Actually, the P-47D encompasses both the razorback and the bubble top. It was handled through different dash numbers for the airplane. The razorbacks were through P-47D-23 and the bubble tops started with P-47D-25 (according to wikipedia).
@@Thercgeek Thanks for the advice. Our club field runway is really bumpy. Thought a shock would be helpful. Also saw your review about the 1.5 meter P51D. Was thinking about swapping the tire for the P47. What size should I go with the P47?
I’d recommend looking at robart tires. They’re hollow rubber and look really good. The stock 1500mm p51 tires are too hard. In terms of size I’d recommend taking a measurement off of the model tire and ordering something similar in size. I don’t have this p47 in my hangar anymore, so I can’t take a measurement. Bare in mind, some modification may be necessary to swap the tires out.
@@Thercgeek I replaced stock tires with Robart tires on my E-flite P-51D mustang 1.2m and F4 Phantom II. 2.75" and 2.5". Both work great. The Robart 2.75" fits the P-51D rim perfectly(should fit the P47D 1.2m as well. They have the same wheels). Just need to cut off the inner circle of the Robart tire and they slide right on the stock rim. The Robart 2.5" fits the F4 Phantom. It needs some glue since the rim sockets are wider than stock rims. Also, I cut off the inner circle to fit stock rims. put a washer on the gear door at each side so it wont get in the way of the wheel. BTW I used Dubro superlite 2.5" for my FMS P40B 980mm and ArrowsHobby P47 980mm. the Robart wheels would be too wide to fit these two smaller birds. I cut of rims come with Dubro superlite. Then slide tires on the stock rims for both planes. These stock rims from FMS and Arrowshobby are one-piece rims. So you will have to push them into the tire. Those 2.5" tire will fit perfectly with your stock rims when you cut a tight circle around the Dubro rim. Hope this could be helpful for folks want to switch their wheels.
I just taped it to the battery since I was swapping between 3s and 4s packs. Normally, I just look to get the weight as far forward as I can inside the airframe. This could be inside the cowl if possible or all the way forward in through the hatch.
Hello, as this plane has SAVE select on it it should be easy to fly. On mine I’m a bit wondering if it’s normal when activating SAVE the elevator goes down a bit and aillerons slight in right turning position......is this normal?
The change in the elevator position I would expect as safe select schedules the elevator based on throttle position. The aileron sounds like a trim difference. You probably just need to set the trim at the SAFE select off position.
So much information, no unnecessary clutter. Thank you. Was straight forward and well done. Thank you again.
Thank you for your kind feedback!

I believe you're making reference to the speed controller and not the receiver, correct? The Spektrum Smart 4s 3200 pack is a good one (bit.ly/Smt4s3200) and the Smart 80 amp ESC as well (bit.ly/SpkAvian80).
@@Thercgeek oh ok sorry about that the speed control make more sense lol, thanks for the response, I’m on it now. Cheers !!!!!
Great video, Chris. BTW, that's an awesome field. Where is your club?
Thank you! The flight was filmed at the wingmasters field here in San Diego. I will usually fly there or at the field on MCAS Miramar.
Thanks. I get to SD from time to time but alas do not travel with a plane and TX. BTW I got the P47 for Christmas... haven’t assembled it yet... was amazed when you said it only took a few mins to be flight ready!
A very good and informative video and a beautiful aircraft
Thanks for watching! 😊
I'm new to the Hobby and recently purchased the E-flite Apprentice s and still have a lot to learn but I find videos such as this very educational
Cool! Welcome to the greatest hobby ever! 😉. If you have any questions let me know. The apprentice is a good place to start. Thank you for watching! 😊
Thank you very much, any additional information on The Apprentice or basic flying techniques would be greatly appreciated
Forgot to mention, if you plan to order and use this link: bit.ly/HorizHby it helps support the channel. Thnaks!
The RC Geek you don’t think 4S in this plane would be too much for a beginner? 😲
Ok sir thank you for the reply man
Another question should I go with rtr or get a dx4e and get a bind and fly one just don’t want to find myself spending more later on the road
Can I use safe and not use retracts so I have a six channel remote
Thanks
I suppose, yeah
Looks like a great flyer on 3s
Wasn't razorback the one with bubble canopy?
Nope, the Razorback is the one with the raised backbone like this one. The bubble canopy is known as the bubble top/canopy.
@@Thercgeek ah, thanks
I’ve not flown the 1.2m mustang, so can’t really say but I’d say it boils down to which you like the looks of better. The p47 is a great airplane, I don’t think you can go wrong with that one.
on a rate of 1-10, how easy is it to fly? i’m maiden-ing tomorrow and im scared
Well, this is a great flyer, but you want to have some rc experience before tackling it.How experienced an rc pilot are you?
@@Thercgeek i have flown the carbon cub s2 on land and floats, the t-28 1.1m and i kind of crashed it but not bad, i’ve also flown the cherokee 1.3m but i’m not the best at flying it. i have flown the cherokee out of safe too
Well, you have some decent experience which helps. The p47 is a very honest flyer with good ground handling, but quite high performance on 4s. So, keep that in mind and throttle back if it’s going too quick for you.
What 4S battery spec do you recommend
I used a 4s 3200 in the airplane. The Spektrum Smart packs (bit.ly/Sm4s3200) are really good or Roaring Top batteries as well. I've been using both and really like them a lot.
Man that plane sounds like a beast on 4s
It IS a beast on 4s. :)
How many channels with this electric motor?
This model requires 6 channels
@@Thercgeek 6!? Yikes, you really need to know what your doing, and you obviously do. Excellent.
Great review! Thanks!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
I have a little problem...during take off....i barrel roll to the left..can u tell me why?
Well, it’s hard to assess based on your description. Tail drafters need right rudder on takeoff to stay straight down the runway. Are you giving it any rudder. Do you have the spektrum as3x receiver in yours? When youre flying the airplane does it fly straight and level hands off?
No...8 channel receiver
No it barrel rolls as soon as it does get up....horizon hobby told me to trim while its on the ground before i take off
It does sound out of trim to me. Check the rigging of the surfaces both ailerons and flaps. They should be equal left to right in the neutral position. If they are equal and it still rolls left, then add some right trim a little at a time.
Ok i minus the left side...is that the same thing?
Hi, to run the 4s I must to upgrade the speed controller?
I've been flying mine on 4cells with the stock ESC and haven't had any issues. For longevity it's probably best to upgrade, but I haven't to this point.
The E-flite mustang seems to have the same electronics and it is marked as a 3s/4s plane, I wonder why....
Well, horizon sent me both 3s and 4s batteries for this review, so that tells me that they think it's ok for 4s.
Thanks. If I assign safe select to a switch on a Dx6, and flaps to another, how do I use the gear?
You need another channel on you system to have safe select and the retracts on seperate channels. I'd recommend having safe select on the same switch as your retracts so then you can have it on with the gear down and off with the gear up. It'll always be on during takeoff and landing.
Horizon Hobby has the best support out of any company. They stand by and back their products 100%. They really are amazing!
Since when?

Looking for ordinance for this plane any suggestions 👍🏻✌🏻🖖🏻
You mean other than what’s included?
Yes they discontinued this plane and I was looking for bombs to put in LX B-25. I can fit six in it or one Quanum Bomb filled with baby powder 🤣😂🤣😂👍🏻✌🏻🖖🏻
Oh dang, they discontinued it, huh? This is such a great model!
So, for ordnance, there’s lots of options available on thingiverse if you have a 3d printer.
Thanks brother !!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
how does the 3s 3200 pack work on it?
it works well. The full flight video is here: ruclips.net/video/pTNeA1GR6AQ/видео.html It's definitely more fun on 4s.
Excellent job!
Thanks and thanks for watching!
Nice video Chris!! thx
Thanks for watching! 😊
Very Nice review !
Thank for watching!
how long is the flight time?
I have my timer set to 5 minutes and typically do a couple touch and goes once it goes off. So total time is over 6 minutes pretty easily and that's flying the airplane pretty hard.
avg flight time with 4C?
I have my timer set for around 5 minutes I think. What I found was that the airplane got longer flight times on 4cells than 3cells as 3cells required more power for cruising.
will we see a new V2 ?????????
That would be pretty awesome
Wasn’t the p47d a bubble canopy not a Razorback?
Actually, the P-47D encompasses both the razorback and the bubble top. It was handled through different dash numbers for the airplane. The razorbacks were through P-47D-23 and the bubble tops started with P-47D-25 (according to wikipedia).
I have the 1.2m Corsair of which has very similar electronics of that of the P47. Does that mean I could run a 4s battery?
The Corsair does have a different motor, so I can't say for sure. I will see what I can find out and let you know.
Hey, man I like this bird!
IT's a good airplane!
They really should've added shock-absorbing struts to the landing gear.
At this size, rarely are shock gear provided. Some softer tires make a huge difference actually.
@@Thercgeek sound good. I was just looking at different sizes Robart tires you recommended in the P51d video. Thanks! Stay safe and keep flying :)
Judging by the looks of that pilot figure I would say it looks like FMS is making e flight planes.
They are.
i needed to add weight to mine
That's not too suprising. With a 3s 3600 pack, I had to add weight too. However, with a 4s 3600, the airplane CG'd about perfectly without any weight.
where did u put ur weight?i put it under the belly
I just taped it to the battery since I was swapping between 3s and 4s packs. Normally, I just look to get the weight as far forward as I can inside the airframe. This could be inside the cowl if possible or all the way forward in through the hatch.
can i put my weight under the battery or will that destroy the battery?
That should be ok.
Everything was good until you mentioned
excellent customer support now that's laughable.
In all fairness this was posted 5 years ago and it was quite good then
Is this in SoCal?!?
It was, yeah
@@Thercgeekis it a club by any chance. Still searching for either a club or just a good place in SoCal to fly. I’m in the Huntington Beach area.
