thanks so much for the correct demonstration of how to get the parking brake to disengage.. all others want you to put 12v power to the actuator. This was the correct and easy way to get this job done
Best video out there for Lexus RX 350 rear brakes. Especially the easy way to disengage the rear ebrake without using crazy wires and drills etc. Thank you so much!
i should have watched your video first! Now i broke the rubber boot with a tiny hole. I put some silicone on it. Waiting for it to dry now. hopefully it will fix it. is the boot replaceable?
You won’t, the car must be somehow in service mode. When you started to do the brake pads, they are already disengaged . Then, you must push the calipers all the way in so the new pads will fit into the rotors. And you won’t be able to disengaged it fully if your are in neutral
Thanks for a great video. Everything worked great! Did anyone tear the rubber circle around the cylinder in the caliper. We noticed it after we finished the job. No fluid coming out. At least not yet. How safe is this? Should I get a new caliper?
Thank you for your support 🙏 That happened accidentally. But give it a week then drive it around then recheck again if there’s a leak. I’ve seen something like that and never leaked. If it does, a rebuilt kit will work
I was confused about this as well. You have to unplug the opposite side to retract the brake caliper pistons on the side you are working on which is counterintuitive.
The shim backing plate from the original is not necessary since the new pads already comes pre install and the brackets that hold the pads need to be clean and new. Those pads are going to be stuck and would not brake even on both sides.
Great shortcut video. However,on the other hand,if the electronic parking brakes malfunction during driving, the brakes applied, and locked up,it would be troubles.
Ok. I have a 2019 Lexus es350. I put the car in service mode to change the rear pads. I was only able to retract the drivers side rear caliper with the 12 volt method as the car service method wasnt working. The passenger rear caliper is not retracting back all the way now. Car is stuck in service mode.. I have tried various different methods to get it to retract and nothing. The motor makes sound and it pushes the piston out but it doesn’t retract all the way back. What to do? And how do I get it out of service mode. It says epb malfunction. I ordered a new caliper
@@antonioramirez1977 well, I installed a new epb assembly and used a scanner from harbor freight to move the system back to the correct settings and to reset the codes inside the car. You just need a scanner with epb capability. It’s easy. Initially, I messed up the epb assembly by trying to pry it off instead of letting the system push it back… if that makes sense. Are you having the same issue?
@@danielmarjanovic9957 yes I Am having the same issue where I tried to reset it using the paper clip method but still doesn’t reset or re engage the epb
@@antonioramirez1977 zr15 scanner from harbor freight. It has a setting on it to reset everything back to normal. Buy it, use it and return. Pay stocking fee. Lexus would charge $150-$200 for this. If the epb assembly is broken just replace it with a used one and use the scanner to place the system back to normal. Easy
Another option is to just pop off the parking brake motor (2 hex bolts), and then stick a hex in the caliper and turn it until caliper can be fully compressed. Very easy, and no popping in out of car, setting and unsetting brake, disconnecting and reconnecting...just a manual job. I'll add, the caliper turn has 0 resistance, so you just pop in a hex that will grab gears and spin it, you could do with your fingernail, if it fit.
Replace them 1 at the time. So it will retract fully just 1 side at the time. After finishing 1 side. (Passenger side first). After installing the new pads on passenger side. Then do then same process to the driver side .
Sorry but this was amateur hour. Look no further than his messy shop. Hard pass. First, "Fast and Easy" and Brakes should not be in the same sentence. This is a job that requires you take your time and not skip any steps which he certainly does. At the end, he does not even remind us to replace the cover on the master cylinder. He also did not have to say start at the far right side since he was not bleeding the brakes. I just did this job. It took a bit of doing but because I prepared it was not too bad. I did a far better job than he did. You need to apply 12v of power to the parking brake motor on both sides to FULLY turn the internal gear- THEN you can press the piston in. If you do it his way you risk damaging the mechanism and the piston will often fail to fully retract. You should thoroughly (that word again) clean the area where the new pads go back and forth. You should add new hardware for the pads including where they go into the bracket after you clean out that channel and warning tabs. Do NOT put grease on the piston like he did. ***REMOVE the slide pins, clean them well and lubricate with a silicone based lub- not petroleum based.*** You do not have to play inside the car twice before doing the other side. You should use a steel wire wheel and drill to clean the rust off the outside of the rotor. Re-torque all bolts in a brake system to spec. This includes the lugs for the wheel as well.

Yes. Whatever side you are working on, you unplug the other side then retract.

Just using a floor jack. Just wanted to do one side at a time if possible.
