I got this lamp today and I was pretty surprised by how easy it was to put it together. And ofc it gives an amazing effect as well. Definitely one of my fave IKEA products
@Nik Patel. The design does restrict light some what, but with a white bulb or the multi coloured bulb set to white - there is enough light to light up our lounge. I would say it would light up a lounge or bedroom etc enough but not bright enough if you need to see or study work, but a separate desk lamp could easily sort that . It's a great lamp
@Lei V . No you do not need to tie anything, it opens and closes pretty smoothly to be honest. It will not close, or open unless the relevant cord is pulled. It definitely will not open or close by itself .
@ProtecSirius Sure, it's very easy to shorten the cable at the top where it fits in the plastic shroud. Simply cut to the desired length and reconnect the shorter wire. I have a wire stripper in the house, I recommend getting one :-)
@zac Wolfe, anything is possible but even in a rental you could remove the pendant and replace it if you ever leave. I would say it would be easier to do that than modify the unit
I saw one of these on display at Ikea today. The thing I found is that it's hard to pull the strings to get it to open and on one of the display models one of the strings had broke from someone trying to pull it to get it to open.
@Drew Paterson. Do you have the funnel shaped screw on piece just after the dome? . This squeezes the cable entry point of the dome to the cable itself, in turn locking the dome tight up against the ceiling. Check you have this plastic funnel piece in place, push the dome up to the ceiling and while holding the dome so it does not spin, tighten up that funnel piece. If this does not work for you, undo the funnel piece and wrap some tape around the dome cable entry point and the cable, nice and tight and a couple of times around, then slide up the funnel piece and tighten as best you can around the clear tape. Either way should do the trick . :-)
@rapter Jesus Yes, I cut the cable because our ceiling is not high ( standard modern height ). If you do this, it helps using wire strippers and make sure no unsleaved wire is visible outside the connector :-)
+Mark O'Reilly I don't have a junction box in my ceiling, so I bought a cord set to turn the PS 2014 into a plug-in lamp. I'm just looking at the bulb housing of the PS 2014...any idea how to disassemble it without destroying it?? I want to attach the new cable at the bulb housing, because technically if I just cut and lengthen the existing cable, I need a junction box to house the marretting, or it does not meet electrical code. Let me know if you have any ideas!
@pleasureofthegreat: Without taking our lamp apart I cannot help with the bulb holder dismantle BUT , why not join your cable using an inline switch? . This is a satisfactory solution to joining the cable and will give you a convenient method if switching the lamp on and off.
@josh w . I'm sorry Josh, it's been a while since I fitted the lamp now and all I can remember is the cable is fairly long. I guess it is long enough for high ceilings and can be easily shortened for lower modern ceilings.
Mark, great video but can you send me a close up of the string mechanism please? when mine arrived one of the strings was tied around one side and it didnt seem like it would move at all so we untied it, but now it drops of its own accord and i can only get it all open or all closed - i cant see how the mechansim should go, can you help please?!!
Hi @Mark O'Reilly we've just tried hanging it, put the hook in the ceiling, hung the plastic part on the hang and tightened the cable, but the housing just hung from the ceiling in a odd angle, it didn't hug the ceiling at all. How did you get it to fit the ceiling so flush?!
@@champagnesupernova2536 GUYS I FIGURED IT OUT I FEEL LIKE A GOD NOW, literally took me an hour just thinking. You have to make the cable too short and when you got it, unscrew the cap that blocks it from falling out, make the cable longer so it is the length you want and screw it back on
Do you think I can modify this to use just a standard hanging bulb? I live in a rental and there is no hard wire connection and I really just want this for the pendent part.
Hi I have the 52cm, the bigger one with 2 springs, I can't figure out how to get the mechanism to work, the ropes are not controlling the base of the mechanism, tried to untie it that doesn't work, I may be doing something wrong
I have an old ceiling light. Took it apart yrs ago and now I can’t remember how to put it together UGH I have 50 white ruler like and 4 hooks :0( frustrated
+jan jaaps No. The copper one is painted on the inside of the shields and the hooks. the difference is with this one is the silver and copper colour is 20 euro more in my country.
If you'd like one for practical use I would recommend getting the silver or copper version. These are painted a reflective copper or silver from the inside, which will provide more light.
+Mark O'Reilly Hi Mark this was a great help, thanks for taking your time to do it!! I can see you remove the rubber heat thing when you shortened the wire? I was worried about doing this... Thanks!

I had fun putting this lamp together. Reminded me of Lego sets from my youth.

Thanks for making this. It helped me determine the proper size that will work best in my condo!
The video was so helpful ...thank you !

Mine closes by itself, it's not been modified or anything like that, any ideas why?
I was a bit intimidated by the kit here, but your video made it come together easy. Cheers!!
@Morten , with a bright bulb and fully open, it is fairly Bright. So yes I would think it would light up a bedroom no problem
@Dino
Thanks.
We still love the lamp, it's a fantastic centre piece :-)
@ProtecSirius

@justin thief,
Brilliant, so glad to hear - that's why I posted it.
Glad it was of help. :-)
@Sydrinne - it is eSy to put together, truly ingenious design. A modern classic!
Sarcasm is the lowest form of whit 🙈😠

Yes, we have ours in the living room / lounge

Thanks for the review!
hi can i ask why is it when why try to open the lamp it closes immediately to we need to tie the pull part or anything?

Adrian Smith i have the same problem dis you find a solution?
I had the same problem. Just loop it over ONCE on the little notch on one side.

@Ryu Ryoshi
Hi, it was £50 plus delivery of ( I think) £6 , so £56 total.
It seems all Ikea is too complicated for Americans to understand, even when it's as simple and easy as this. Great design for little money.
@real agar - thank you. Your welcome
@ Phil Kiel , I have sent you a video link to show you how mine fits flush to ceiling and hangs straight. Hope it helps

Phil Kiel I'm trying to find out the same thing. Can't get it flush

Hi mate. Did you cut the cable? Mine is far too long for the room I'm putting it in.
Hi Marcus,
Yes I cut the cable considerably, just so the lamp hangs down and misses my head by a whisker :-)
Hi Mark, would you be able to tell me what the length is of the cable before you cut it? None of documentation states the length. Thanks in advance.
@Fox. Your welcome :-)
TonGio18 , your very welcome, hope ugly was helpful
Its a bloody nightmare, cant get it flush & the cord does not work, looked great in store, wish id not bothered😟

You having a laugh you do all of that and don't show how fit fit it good god
Its a Dyson Sphere model

Question: Can you adjust the height of the lamp? I don't want it hanging too low from the ceiling... good video!
You can just curl up the cable inside the cover on top of it.
Titus Weber I have my lamp nicely installed. Thanks for reply (even if bit late) :)
+ProtecSirius Did you cut the cable?
thanks you
Can it light up a bedroom?
thanks bro
I have an old ceiling light. Took it apart yrs ago and now I can’t remember how to put it together UGH I have 50 white ruler like and 4 hooks :0( frustrated
Can anyone tell me if this can be used in the living room as well?
MERCI
Having problems fitting dome part to ceiling, it just drops down. Any idea what im doing wrong?
me too. did you figure it out?
Is this the copper colour version ?
+jan jaaps No. The copper one is painted on the inside of the shields and the hooks. the difference is with this one is the silver and copper colour is 20 euro more in my country.
Anyone know how to remove it? The half-cylinder is proving to be troublesome.
Does it provide enough light in the room?
If you'd like one for practical use I would recommend getting the silver or copper version. These are painted a reflective copper or silver from the inside, which will provide more light.
How much is it?
£40 for the standard orange or blue internal armed version, £70 for the shiny orange interior version
