I've always loved this song! It was definitely her most under played imho. Funny how the video somewhat show kinda how she got started. While working at bank her and some guy friends want to see Liza Manelli and she told herself "I can do that". The next day she quit her job and finally met Neal. Together they are unstoppable!
This is definitely one of her best songs, even though it's from her personally most dis-liked LP for reasons well known. What spoils the song is obviously all the talking in the video which just rips all that emotion straight out of the song. However, songs like The Art Of Letting Go are testament to the great strength of 1985's Seven The Hard Way. Then again, I also love Wide Awake.. and think that was an extremely under-rated album.

To the younger people here: in the Eighties, it became really fashionable to turn music videos into "high art," with actors saying lines within the video itself, having movie directors create videos, etc. If memory serves, La Bel Age is from 1986, which would have been smack dab in the middle of this "art" movement at MTV. Other examples would be "Owner of a Lonely Heart" by Yes and "Smuggler's Blues" by Glenn Fry. Just a little history lesson from someone who was there ;-)
Oh you speak the truth right there. She is my favourite female singer of all time & this is one of my fave songs of hers. This video is absolutely destroyed by all the talking through it and I'm sure Pat wouldn't have been happy about it either - and probably the reason it wasn't the hit it deserved to be (plus she had to hold a cigarette and "pretend" she was smoking, when she detests smoking - even though Neil is a heavy smoker).

The cigarette was a prop to add reality to the 50-s era set, a nod to the nightclubs in NYC at the time. Pat had full creative control by the time Seven The Hard Way came out, so she had to approve this video.
One of Pat's co-workers at the Catch A Rising Star in NY in the late 70's; all comedians and then PAT as the singer. LOL! What a great work environment.
Always loved this song. I Iove Pat Benatar. Clever band. They were essentially a new wave rock band. Crimes of Passion, Get Nervous Tropico and Seven are exemplary of Neil Geraldo's guitar work which is a master class married to Pats voice and the songwriting. It's a match made in Heaven.
I always say Neil Giraldo is an underrated guitarist, I love every one of his solos, they are elaborate, and just-right for every Pat Benatar song. Hit Me With Your Best Shot, and Precious Time are two of my favorites.
Some reason I loved hearing this song when it came out but no idea what she was singing about? Yet I couldnt stop trying to listen to it as radio didnt play it much and you could only catch it on MTV the short 15 min it had in 80s music timeline. I can say the video maybe derailed any chance of this song having any success with the drama interruptions. Nobody in the 80s wanted bullshit interrupting a song. This song came and went so fast and was forgotten because of this imo Its 2021 and somehow I woke up and remembered it at 420am and decided to youtube it save it before I go back to sleep and forget I even remembered the song that I chased MTV to try and hear back in it's short lived time.
When I first heard Lady Gaga's "The Edge Of Glory" it instantly reminded me of Pat Benatar's "Le Bel Age" which is one of the most underappreciated gems from the 80s!

I saw part of this video being filmed in a tiny historical town called Old Mesilla, NM. I have been searching for quite some time what the specific footage filmed in this bar named El Patio. I'm almost positive this is it. It's the only video I've found with PB smoking a cigarette. She was sitting alone with a round table and a cigarette as a prop exactly like the very end of this video. She was laughing when I walked up so this has to be it. I had seen her concert the night before. Memories...
Saw PB in Germany when I was 20 in 1979 at a small general admission venue. She was a few years older than I, and I was in the front row. Every boy there that night, including Neil G., were in love.
