I’d love to just chill and kick back with Mike. He’s such a talent and despite all his well earned success he’s still so friendly and down to earth. Love you and LP forever man!
A lot of people (myself included) realized when the demo version of In The End dropped, that Mike has always been a top-tier rapper. But even more than that, he's been a top-tier songwriter and bandmate, which is why he dialed back his rap parts and severely simplified them in the final version of In The End, because that fits the song better. It's a similar story in many of the other demo songs, but to me on In The End it stands out the most.
People can say whatever they can but man mike is the one of the greatest rapper on earth. He is the frontman of linkin park🔥🔥🔥 Remember the time when everyone was tripping on hybrid theory songs when it was released back then. No band has ever done that since then.
The funny thing about this story to me is that Amy Lee of Evanescence mentioned that when her band were recording their debut album the record exec working with them wanted to add a rapper to the group because that was all the rage in the early 2000s. She had to fight the record exec to let them do their own thing. Having a rapper wouldn't have been a fad if the record exec had his way and got Mike out of the band.
Im reminded of what Zappa once said about the state of affairs in the music industry... where it shouñd be in good habds, because these guys grew up being fans of great music. But it boggles his mind how it's in worse hands of fans, than the bean counting suits before. "At least the suits were willing to throw something at the wall to see if it stuck."
The studio interfered so much on Evanescence. On the song Bring Me to Life, the male singing in it was added by the studio after the song was already recorded because the studio thought it wouldn’t sell without a man in it.

And then it releases and is a massive runaway hit, and suddenly those same people are coming back like "I always believed you could do it. I knew from the start this was going to be a hit. Now make sure you keep making more just like this and don't ever change a thing or try anything creative. Just turn this into a formula and make it over and over." Same thing happened with Stan Lee and Spider-Man, the Wachowskis with The Matrix, even happened to The Beatles. It's the "too risky" creative endeavours that find massive success, while the "safe bets" fail and are forgotten.
Not really. Record and studio executives are risk averse, but they're not stupid. You see someone like Linkin Park doing things differently and getting wild success and it's like "These suits don't know what they're doing, you gotta take chances!" Problem is, you don't see the thousands of other artists who also wanted to and were allowed to take chances. Because you never heard of them. Because they failed. An artist doing what everyone else is doing is more likely to get *some* success. A fresh idea has a chance of being the Next Big Thing, but that chance is so much smaller than people realise having only seen the success stories. It's a huge gamble.
This story of replacing Mike with a reggae guy reminded me about a story when Keanu Reeves agent or someone like that suggested him to adopt different name to sound better and basically - be more commercially appealing. And that name allegedly was Chuck Spadina..... Can you imagine that?

Linkin Park is my very first rock band I listened to, waiting every album they made every year until the day we losing Chester.. Thank God they still releasing the demo and unreleased song.. worth to wait until the 20th anniversary of One more light album.
Shout out to Chester Bennington too. Not only is Mike a stand up guy, but Chester was too. Chester refused to have Mike kicked out of the band, and not a lot of singers would be willing to stick with their friends over potential fame and success. If Chester agreed for Linkin Park to just have him as their vocalist, then Mike for sure would've been kicked out. I'm glad that didn't happen.

I have a strong feeling I know who he's talking about, and if that's the case, then I've met him, and he definitely seemed pretty sketch 😅. He worked with one of my friends bands and was constantly spending more time "showboating" them to his friends rather than managing them. To the day I met him which was back in 2015/2016, he was still bragging about how he "discovered" Linkin Park and made them famous.
I was literally telling my gf about a friend of mine having an argument with me saying how much Mike sucked because there was so many rappers better than Mike. and I said none of them rap about the stuff that Mike dose. real issues real emotions and not toxic masculine Bro stuff.
Mike is so much more than “the rapper in LP”. That’s an insult. Mike makes LP go. Collision Course and Reanimation were both prob 90% Mike. Not to mention the keyboards, pianos and guitars he plays.
Good ass song called “get me gone” by fort minor that Mike made that describes the whole thing. “Maybe Joe Han should wear a lab coat and a cowboy hat when we play on stage” 😂
Wow, I had no idea Mike is still upset with Jeff Blue. I've just finished his book and he was remorseful of how he handled things, but it really doesn't seem like the band would have been signed without him so it's sad that they never made up.
Well not everything, lol. He did most of it yes, but Chester did some too, and they also did quite a bit of co-writing together aswell. Brad even got more involved with the writing in their last album.
And to think without him the band wouldn't be what it became. People trying to get rid of him before they even took off must have felt extremely stupid after their success.

He's referring to Madd Lion. Not sure if he's talking about Jeff Blue or a record exec as the guy trying to kick him out. But Jeff had to be the messenger in between what the label wanted and the band just so the band wasn't in the dark. I hope Mike and Jeff are on good terms
Yup, even Chester had said it MANY MANY times. That's one of the things that I love about Mike and Chester with their brotherly bond they never bragged about themselves. Instead, Chester is the one that tells others on how amazing Mike is in literally everything that he does for the band, his creativity and as a human, and Mike always did the same with Chester about his impressive range of vocals, his passion and also as a human. Chester was the one who pushed Mike out of his comfort zone to also sing more than just doing the rap stuff so he could do both. Because he really loved Mike's singing voice. Mike once said that he couldn't believe that Chester of all people thought that he had a good singing voice and how he loved his vocals and felt very honored by that. He considered Chester as the best vocalist in their time and that he would challenge anyone to try to sing against Chester, lol. In one of the interviews that Mike did for the "OML" album, he told them how he was doing less rapping but doing more singing. He told them how it couldn't be any better because "I get to sing 7 days a week next to Chester who is the best vocal coach" and instead of talking about how good he sounded on it. Instead, he tells them on how blown away they will all be by Chester's singing in the "One More Light" album. Because (outside of his band, friends, family, and some of the fans) not many have really heard his actual singing voice like he did with the cover of "Rolling in the Deep."
that can be the biggest f-u energy someone can do. -hey change this and change that...oh to hell with it, just change evrything that you are -hmm no we are going to do things our way -fine dont cry if you fail *they win*
It seems to me that Mike is talking about Jeff Blue, who says in his book that these ideas, like replacing Mike, were imposed on him by others, and he was, as it were, just the face of them. I wonder what it was really like. Still, even if he was whitewashing himself, it was nice to read his book.
Yeah during Hybrid the label wanted to get rid of Mike's rapping and have Chester as the face/voice of the band as his. They even met Chester in secret and told him this. Chester told them to go f*ck yourselves and how it wasn't HIS band. He left that meeting and went to Mike and the guys right away and told them what had just happened and on what he said to them. That was the moment that solidified their bond as brothers. That's when all 6 members of the band knew in that moment they had each others backs 100% no matter what. Especially with Mike and Chester, they admired, supported, and were protective over each other. They always thought of themselves as a wild card, they loved expermenting with different genre/styles, and making music that has meaning and people can relate the message to wheather its on a personal level or whats going on in the world. They have always been open and honest on what they were going to do so they wouldn't mislead anyone. They are not like other bands. Never have they've always been unique. They do things that THEY want to do and not what others want them to be. After the label realized the success off of their 1st album after all the BS, the label wanted them to keep doing the same thing as before, and thats not what they wanted. So, they broke out of that very quickly, the label finally backed off of them during Meteora and let them do things their own way by doing it independently with just a little bit of guidance from Rick Ruben. Mike/Brad produced their music, Mike/Chester wrote the songs and then Brad got more involved with the writing in their last album, Mike /Joe came up with art ideas for their albums, Joe also directed majority of their music videos, Mike/Joe came up with set designs/visuals on how they want the stages to be on tour, Mike also did the band merchandise and created their web design. They did EVERYTHING that THEY WANTED to do. If anything, "Linkin Park" is its own genre. They were a very special different kind of band and did it by their own rules. Thats what I love about this band and the chemistry that they have. All 6 of them were/are very talented in many different things and each of them had something to contribute to the band.
Poor Mike. I've listened many times that story about they wanted him out of the band but I didn't know they also wanted a reggae version of In The End lol 🤣 what the fuck with that label?
All those deep "so true" meaningful LP songs that you credit to Chester "trying to tell us something" that changed if not saved your life? Yeah, you can kiss 95% of ALL of those goodbye without Mike Shinoda.
How did they not want Mike rapping when fucking Kid Rock, POD, Limp Bizkit, and Rage all had rapping on their albums? Nu-metal was specifically known for rap + metal.
I remember Tom Morello saying in a interview that at the beginning when Rage got signed that a record exec told them the band was good but they needed to get rid of the ''rap thing''. And he told at the end that when the interview was over they were about to yet meet again with the same major label exec to see if he had the same opinion, after RATM have sold millions already. Just to rub it in his face haha
When I saw them do the BlizzCon closing band. He was the only one that was excited to be there and was having a blast. Everyone else seemed not interested. I hate to say this, but Chester didn't sound very good either. I was sad...
Yeah, Linkin Park really wouldn't have had any effect at all on the world of music if they catered to what the label wanted, more than likely. Weird to think about that alternate reality.
Yeah you know, I don't know about the rapping like, I don't know... maybe you should just be a rock band. Thank God they still releasing the demo and unreleased song.. worth to wait until the 20th anniversary of One more light album.
Mike Shinoda actually has done a track about this situation it is called Get Me Gone by Fort Minor.
Just imagine some guy trying to change what you poured your heart on, because "it might sell".
I actually laughed out loud at this part. What the fuck was the guy who suggested this on? 🤣🤣
Now I want to hear In the End, the reggae version.
"In the end, it doesn't even matter."
"Yeah mon."
The execs name is Jeff Blue. He’s a crazy dude.
Makes you wonder how many bands they actually affected and got singers kicked out just because the label didn't like the sound..
There's a song on the Fort Minor's Rising Tied album that talks about this. Can't remember which one.
Fort Minor - "Get Me Gone"
It starts with one ting, I don't know why
But we cahn't deny, it ketches us by surprise
We try to hold on tight, but it slips away
And in di end, nuttin' else mattahs anyway
Sometimes tings ain't what dey seem to be
We get caught up in our own reality
And dough you try to hold on, it slips away
And all you're left with are di words you couldn't say
One love, one heart, let's come togeddah and start
With the force of a lion, we can tear dis apart
We try to hold on, but it's already gone
And we're left with memories, wonderin' what went wrong
💀
but thats actually dope lyrics
@@krillinsindahouse1898 You're fun, bet everyone loves your company.
@@Colin-jm8sk are you being sarcastic?
@@krillinsindahouse1898 Ah, intelligent also.
"and it worked." people at labels sometimes dont know what they are talking about.
I need more Mike interviews
Lol seriously? That dude wanted mike out? You cannot take a soul out of the body. Insane.
I watch how the moon sits in the sky on a dark night, shining from the light of the sun. but the sun doesn't give the light to the moon assuming the moon's gonna owe it one. That makes me think of how you actively do favors then rapidly just turn around and start asking me? of the things that you want back from me................................................. 10/10. Everytime that song pops up it just hits the soul. Mike is a beast
Linkin park isn't just a band they are a family and us fans are part of that family that's why we miss chester and if Mike was gone we would miss him to
I hope he releases the reggae version of In The End.
I guess it'd be like the reanimation version and the rick rubin altnc merged but 100x worse
@@Xenuos lol or 100x better...
@@ALEN1ful they never recorded it I bet 🤣
I have a strong feeling I know who he's talking about, and if that's the case, then I've met him, and he definitely seemed pretty sketch 😅. He worked with one of my friends bands and was constantly spending more time "showboating" them to his friends rather than managing them. To the day I met him which was back in 2015/2016, he was still bragging about how he "discovered" Linkin Park and made them famous.
Yeah you could say the guy really Blue it lol
@@Xeroforte Yeeeeppp 😅
that story between Howard stern interview and this. I love to hear how In The End became a hit so quick rn.
Mike we love you
I can't imagine in the end without mike
I was literally telling my gf about a friend of mine having an argument with me saying how much Mike sucked because there was so many rappers better than Mike. and I said none of them rap about the stuff that Mike dose. real issues real emotions and not toxic masculine Bro stuff.
NF raps about real emotions and issues, if you haven't heard of him.
"toxic masculine" 🤣
Mike is an awesome rapper!!! ❤️🔥 🤘
@@BrendanRaymondKoroKoro 🤣🤣🤣
Mike is so much more than “the rapper in LP”. That’s an insult. Mike makes LP go. Collision Course and Reanimation were both prob 90% Mike. Not to mention the keyboards, pianos and guitars he plays.
"Reggae guy from New York to replace me."
Ok, my head-cannon now says there's an alternate universe out there where Matisyahu sang on In the End.
Mike has never got the credit he deserved. He created the iconic link in park sound.
Good ass song called “get me gone” by fort minor that Mike made that describes the whole thing. “Maybe Joe Han should wear a lab coat and a cowboy hat when we play on stage” 😂
Mike is wonderful❤
OMG !! like seriously put an reggae man in the place of mike?? crazy.. thanks god the band fought for the bandmate and their music
Mike raps about this on "Get Me Gone" on his solo project Fort Minor. Rising Tide was a really amazing album
without Mike, LP wouldn't have worked like at all!
Bruh, Shinoda is the GOAT - random Reggae dude from New York simply can't touch this man 😅
Wow, I had no idea Mike is still upset with Jeff Blue. I've just finished his book and he was remorseful of how he handled things, but it really doesn't seem like the band would have been signed without him so it's sad that they never made up.
Pretty funny seeing that he wrote every single the band ever had
Well not everything, lol. He did most of it yes, but Chester did some too, and they also did quite a bit of co-writing together aswell. Brad even got more involved with the writing in their last album.
And to think without him the band wouldn't be what it became. People trying to get rid of him before they even took off must have felt extremely stupid after their success.
Such a down-to-earth guy Mike is man
Yeah after seeing them from the start of LP to the unfortunate finish I can't see them being a band anymore it's never going to be the same and it would be a huge huge task for the new singer just to cope with the whole thing. It was a privilege to be able to experience their rise from being called Hybrid Theory then them changing the name to LP because of the Lincoln Park and all, I only saw them once and I have to be honest it wasn't the best live gig I was on i was kind of disappointed but I get it it was so fu¢King cold and it was like June and man it was freezing and it was a outside gig the sound was terrible and you can see they were tired after South America tour, then I was supposed to see them and my another favourite band P.O.D in Warsaw in Polish state/country of Europe but they cancelled and that was it, man sometimes people are complaining and I'm the same i do complain but what a privilege it was to see all the bands from 90s and early 00s live, Deftones, Staind, Limp Bizkit, Korn, System of the down, Blink 182 just after they got back together , iLL ninio and that was probably one of the best because venue was cancelled but they were so cool that they booked the voodoo bar and played in the small pub that most of bands only starting at and because I knew security guys I was able to stay with them and we drinked to the early morning then they got on the tour bus , Twin Atlantic just on top of my head.
I remember reading about this in jeff blues book “becoming LINKIN PARK”
He's referring to Madd Lion. Not sure if he's talking about Jeff Blue or a record exec as the guy trying to kick him out. But Jeff had to be the messenger in between what the label wanted and the band just so the band wasn't in the dark. I hope Mike and Jeff are on good terms
Mike should do a reggae remix of In the End just to stick it to that record label guy
No. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
It actually might sound decent. Originally, "don't stay" was supposed to have a reggae rhythm.
You can tell that Mike is trying really hard not to speak the lyrics to his Fort Minor song, Get Me Gone 😂.
I'd be lying if I said I'm not curious now about what a reggae _In The End_ cover would sound like
Mike rocking the Dad Nike tennis shoes.
Now I really wanna hear Mike make a verison with Reggae parts on In The End x'D
Kicked out? He basically is Linkin Park
"Before the first song that you heard me on, there were people already trying to get me gone."
As far as I know, Mike is the genius behind it all
Yup, even Chester had said it MANY MANY times.
-hey change this and change that...oh to hell with it, just change evrything that you are
-hmm no we are going to do things our way
-fine dont cry if you fail
*they win*
Mike can sing, rap, play guitar, piano/keyboard, produce etc. And then a fool thought that the east coast reggae stoner is better than Mike.
🤣🤡🤣
Legends
Whats cool about LP is they legit normal guys who make great music that are very relatable .
Mike is so underrated
It seems to me that Mike is talking about Jeff Blue, who says in his book that these ideas, like replacing Mike, were imposed on him by others, and he was, as it were, just the face of them. I wonder what it was really like. Still, even if he was whitewashing himself, it was nice to read his book.
He flat out out admitted he bullied Mike in that book.
In the end it doesn't even matter who the guy was..😛
He's not working anymore 😂🤣 Mike just won't throw shade lmao
Who else remembers “Get me gone” by Fort Minor?
It worked? You mean you made the Goat album 😃
Poor Mike. I've listened many times that story about they wanted him out of the band but I didn't know they also wanted a reggae version of In The End lol 🤣 what the fuck with that label?
In an alternative universe:
One thing, I don't know why.
It doesn't even matter if no woman, no cry.
I think the reggae version of in the end is Mike's verse in waiting for the end😄
I need a reggae cover of In The End now.
All those deep "so true" meaningful LP songs that you credit to Chester "trying to tell us something" that changed if not saved your life? Yeah, you can kiss 95% of ALL of those goodbye without Mike Shinoda.
It's silly how many people think that all lead singers must have created 100% of the words that they sing just because they're lead singers.
but In The End… we got the good version of in the end
How did they not want Mike rapping when fucking Kid Rock, POD, Limp Bizkit, and Rage all had rapping on their albums? Nu-metal was specifically known for rap + metal.
I remember Tom Morello saying in a interview that at the beginning when Rage got signed that a record exec told them the band was good but they needed to get rid of the ''rap thing''. And he told at the end that when the interview was over they were about to yet meet again with the same major label exec to see if he had the same opinion, after RATM have sold millions already. Just to rub it in his face haha
Probably because they were different from those bands. Emotionally, sonically, lyrically.
When I saw them do the BlizzCon closing band. He was the only one that was excited to be there and was having a blast. Everyone else seemed not interested. I hate to say this, but Chester didn't sound very good either. I was sad...
He actually talked about this in some Fort Minor songs
The guy I believe he is speaking of is Jeff Blue
It's mind blowing how that would have had absolutely no affect on the world of music
Yeah, Linkin Park really wouldn't have had any effect at all on the world of music if they catered to what the label wanted, more than likely. Weird to think about that alternate reality.
as a kid I loved both frat rock and linkin park.
Yeah you know, I don't know about the rapping like, I don't know... maybe you should just be a rock band.
You know what I mean, like, trying to change us
like they signed us as an act like what we sound like and then he's like
Oh I don't know maybe you should just play keyboard
Before the first song that you heard me on
There were people already tryin' to get me gone
Tellin' me to quit rapping
Just play the keys
That my band had a singer
They didn't need me
Take it he is talking about Jeff Blue
Yep
Yep
"Ehhh no comments" sent me! 😂
Was this the guy who also suggested Joe wear a lab coat and cowboy hat?
if you heard fort minor stuff, you knew this ;)
so wild how the music industry is
"Can you believe that?
Like it's crazy, it sounds crazy right?
Like at this point, at this point you're thinking, you hear it out and you're like
"That guy was out of his mind"
But honestly that's what he wrote
Besides the fact that he wanted me to just play keyboard or whatever
He didn't want me to rap
He was like "Maybe Joe Hahn should, um
Wear a lab coat and a cowboy hat" on, like when we play
I swear to God he was crazy
And later on he claimed he wrote all our songs so that was really bad."
--Mike to Jay Z on "Get Me Gone"
So the guy that brough them into the label was also trying to get Mike kicked out? HUH?
They wanted also cancel Numb
Replace with Lost
Good decision
Numb is much more a banger
Funny how in 95 the record label wanted Phil Anselmo to rap on which became The Great Southern Trendkill.
In The End with reggae sounds cool to me
reggae? in place of Shinoda ? wtf (!) would not have worked across he world like they did, so glad they fought it D), I don't know what that would have looked like in the us, but here in Norway it would not been a great hit i don't think. Linkin park forever though, R.I.P. Chester.
"Maybe Joe Hahn should... Wear a lab coat... And a cowboy hat."
"This guy" was that Jeff Blue??
In The End would have been the highest selling song of all time if they let Shaggy do the verses
No.
It would've been completely ruined.
Having Chester's voice and Shaggy's voice in that song would've just sounded silly and be a turn off.
Mike is a super nice guy, just wish he'd backoff shilling out NFTs to his fan base lol.
It's almost like, if you let a band make the music they want, it's way more likely to do better. Hm. Weird.
