2008 Pontiac Grand Prix Transmission Flutter?

  • Have a question on my 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix and I want to know if anyone else has had this issue. It seems like the transmission will do this slight "flutter" in between shifts once in a while, mostly at higher speeds or when wanting to kick it into a "passing" gear. Fluid and filter I believe are still factory, so I don't know if that could correct it, or is there another issue? Hopefully not. Saw a video of a Pontiac Grand Am that does the same thing. Any feedback, let me know. Thank you!

Also you can do a fluid change without any problems as long as you dont have it flushed. Flushing your transmission is a very bad idea as any debris that was sitting can clog your transmission causing an even worse problem. If you want to do a transmission flush then you have to have your transmission taken apart, cleaned and put back together before you have the flush done. Just add a transmission cleaner and get a cleaner for your fuel tank like Gum out, there is a cleaner by gum out that gets rid of debris in your gas tank, cleans your fuel injectors and does a few other things and I would add it to your tank every 3 fill ups. Something else that will help is not letting your gas level drop below a quarter of a tank to prevent any debris that is in the bottom from being injected into your engine along with the gas.

My car was doing EXACTLY the same thing for two years. Turns out at the last service it was overfilled by quite a bit. Did a flush and set fluid to proper level and now NO PROBLEMS! The 4T65e does NOT LIKE overfill by any amount

It's your battery. I know that sounds very crazy but if you don't have good connection to the battery or a bad battery it can make it seem like your transmission is slipping. Check out your battery first and see if it's time for a new one

Solved mine this weekend, it was doing the exact same thing as yours. My 2005 GP 129K miles was surging (flutter) on light acceleration typically 2-2.5K rpm range cruising speeds. I found another write up that said to clean the contacts on the battery cables and the smaller wire from the ground harness to the inside fender (Passenger side behind battery tray). I was skeptical but it worked. I disconnected everything, sanded the area down (below the small wire), cleaned the cables, reconnected and then covered with area with rubberized underbody paint so it would not corrode again. Took it for a drive, no issues, and I am now on day 2 with still no issues!

I had a pretty severe flutter on a 2010 Cobalt, especially once locked up in 4th. When it was happening I was trying to apply more load to the vehicle to try to keep the converter clutch better locked. I first cleaned the MAF, no go. Ended up clearing the pins with pliers on the IAT/MAF and this extreme flutter went away - I suspect the computer saw changing load from the MAF though perhaps IAT had some influence, not sure. Now, if I really really look closely the odd time a very very minor flutter could occur at extremely light loads but it is not felt and barely seen.

I have a 2006 pontiac gran prix and I have had the exact same problem with the RPM needle flickering and the car feeling hesitant to reach the next gear, then it starts to jerk back and fourth. I have read a lot blogs, suggesting fuel filter change, clean throttle body, and everything else. None of it permanently resolved the issue. I decided to make the big move, and had a gm dealer put a BRAND NEW transmission in. I want to leave anyone who is having the same issue with 100% assurance that the transmission is the problem. If you want your car fix, either do as I did or get your transmission rebuilt. My car runs smoother than it ever has, EVER! Best of luck to all.

I have an 06 and it was doing the exact same thing. I had done the google and youtube research on the problem and finally decided a new transmission would be in my near future. I decided to keep driving the car till it completely went out and then I would replace it. Well I am coming in from work one night and park, turn the car off and the engine kinda shook as it stopped running. It had never done that before. I tried to start it and the battery was completely dead. I took the battery out and got up next morning and bought a replacement, put it in and go to work. The stuttering problem completely disappeared. It's been a couple of months and the problem has never reappeared. I'm not an expert so I am only guessing that removing the power had reset something relative to the transmission programming?? So if you are still having the problem, try disconnecting the battery for a while.

That's something that never crossed my mind! I had actually replaced the battery back in 2012 because it would completely die. Before I replaced the battery, I don't think I've ever had an issue with transmission. However, I may disconnect the battery in the near future and see what happens. Thanks for the input!

Torque converter. Need transmission fluid change but "don't" flush yet. Chance the fluid and filter, run about 1000 miles of that fluid. Then change fluid and filter and flush if so desired. Most shops will not flush if you have had slipping. Just FYI. 2006 Grand Prix owner. Good luck bud.

I change the transmission fluid as well as the filter and also put some shutter fix in it along with some Lucas additive that helped The problem a little bit then I Clean the throttlebody and the mass airflow. After doing that I noticed that my ignition wire/plug was loose One of them clicked back into place and the other is busted after just plugging one back in after it snapped in it completely change the way it was driving now it only occasionally shutters and I assume that it will go back to normal after I replaced the plugs with new ones but that seems to be the problem. built in fuel filter on pump maybe. But sometimes there's one little member that gets overlooked and Even GM parts and service tells you there's no listing for it but it has one. and that is the PCV valve. it's in a very well hidden place on the manifold. It's beneath the mass Airflow sensor. Remove the wire connector from the sensor. Now it's going to be very tight. turn the sensor assembly counter clockwise. Careful though, there is a spring underneath and it's a bit spring loaded. Voila underneath you will see the PCV. valve. If these aren't changed at a 30000 Km interval ( every 2nd oil change if your running synthetic) they will plug giving a false reading and cause all sorts of readings on your H.U.D. they will plug and get super stuck in the manifold bore it sits in and gummed up. robbing power and preventing the transmission from upshifting properly or fluttering. That sensor might even be called a crankcase pressure sensor but it looks like a map sensor.

Sounds like a pressure problem in the transmission which means 1 of 3 things (Mine has the same issues) you have to replace the pressure solinoid in the transmission or the transmission itself or your computer has a sensor issue which is causing the car to have issues building the right amount of pressure in the transmission. If you are ever under the hood (or doing something with the transmission in particular) examine your torque converter and shift solenoid. Although the shift solenoid is a more common problem for our cars. Do you have a GT? Because It seems that the transmission on the GT's (4t60e (non hd)) have this problem more. I don't know a whole lot on the transmissions on the 04+ models (I own an 02') but I would imagine disconnecting the battery, for how ever long feels safe to you, would do the trick. If that doesn't work just replace the solenoid (I assume you already know that though haha.)

The only thing I could gather out of the whole "disconnecting the battery" thing is that it resets all of the computer related items in the car, including the transmission solenoids. Once the battery is hooked back up and the car is driven after, the computer has to reprogram the shift patterns to the solenoids, which is why I haven't had major issues afterwards. Replacing the solenoids or the whole transmission are probably the only other two options if the battery disconnect doesn't do it. That's all I can think of.

Dang, I'm sorry to hear that! The only issues I've ever encountered with mine is once in a while it won't start right away. It will run shaky for a few seconds and die. The second time I try starting it, I give it a little gas after it starts and it runs fine. I heard that's common with the electric throttle body that comes on these Grand Prixs. I was going to have mine cleaned out to see if that makes a difference. Good luck to you though!

Well if I were you I would defiantly clean the MAF & TB. I would check for loose wires and change air filter stuff like that. How does the transmission fluid look and smell when you pull the dipstick out and is it at the correct amount? To much or to little will mess up your trans quick. Also I would check the spark plugs and spark wires and replace if you haven't done already. You also could try using seafoam which cleans everything out.

It could be that your ignition control module is going out... My car was doing the same thing at 70mph the R.P.M would go up and down slightly but noticeable .. Till a Year later it went out... And if you buy this part, buy original gm ignition control module.. Any after market part will fail.. Believe me it happened twice with after market ICM 's.. Grand prix are high maintenance cars when it comes to engine components... I have a 2006. It's a good car, well built engine, fast and reliable when it's needed .. But it's a top dollar bitch..

Hope to all owners, this fluttering can last years and not really do anything but annoy the shit out of you. I have a 2002 grand am gt has been doing it 3+ yrs. Started when a tire company (lets call it LeS) put tires on the rear that rubbed against the actual springs for 10k miles before I NOTICED and took it back in. LeS wouldn't pay shit but replace the tires (the springs had worn a gash into the inside of the tires!) Yes, I should have taken them to court....
Now, 3yrs later, its only (at 157k miles) just now getting to hard shifting, about once a month, then it will start up fine again and only symptom is fluttering between 60-70mph into overdrive on the freeway. I've replaced battery, reset computers, the tranny was flushed when i bought it, but the damned thing is going to need tranny wrk.
I think the drag caused by the tires actually touching springs and dragging on them for 10k miles ruined something in the transmission before the tires were replaced with the right size. Amazing how stupid tire retailers can be and be warned@@

Trans fluid to SOOO important. At minimum, at least drain and refill ever 2 years or 24,000 miles with Dexron VI (Amazon sells for less). Also, many that appear to have trans problems are really have ignition issues. Change all plug wires and spark plugs, I wouldn't be surprised if this cures your problem. Clean the coil packs as well. Looks for codes as well that point to multiple misfire if it gets really bad. No mechanic in a bottle, not a way to fix your car and seldom does any good.

It dud not cure it, although it does not happen as much.. Thru more investigation, I have heard that the torque converter is the culprit! This is a costly fix!! Tranmison could be the problem but frist clean the throttle body that sould be step one it the cheepes. Next move on spark plug, wire, air filter ,oil, coil packs and o2 sensors . if its still doing it. Look in to the fule pump and thebfule filter it might be geting to the pont for new one. 2nd to last deal with your passer frunt tire it going be the drive shaft sense it longer than the driver side frunt wheel drive shaft. over time it get perty won out especially when any year and make of this tipe of car hit 200,000 milles or close to it that this shimy and jerk is the frist sign when cruz contol set try go up hills its start shiming and it may seem it the tranmison but it will me more noticeable on curvy roads with sharp turns that shimy get more pronounce and that will still cost less then have a transmission rebuilt and still have the same problem if you didnt go head with the cheeper rout frist. last one is finely the one thinks it is then you were right all long and is it is the tansmission and if you have the money... rebuild!! it or just get new one. Witch ever but you might want save little extra and get you engine overhauled as well that way your car will live on futher and it will keep you from being discussed with the car when any thang mager go wrong. But im going thew the same problem iv already got new air filter oil change and clean throttle body With my car so it still has the shimmy now im on geting new spark plugs wires, coil packs and o2 sensors. so we will see but people replace that drive shaft on passger side the problem gose away and at less you gave you car a full trun up be for the problem got solve and over time you could be slowly saving. To buy the drive shaft why replacing the small stuff

If anyone has updated this ... i had a similar issue with my GTP, it turned out to be a few items causing it, but bottom line is it is NOT a transmission issue but more so related to the engine.
I was lost for ideas and thought it would need a trans service.
In my case it was a combination of old spark plugs, a dirty throttle body, and cheap gas. Mainly cheap gas caused some of the issues (89 octane). Got new plugs, replaced distributors with junk yard set, ran seafoam, through the throttle body, intake, and a can in the fuel tank. After that we hit the road for a good 1500 mile round trip and the problem never showed up since, it was so bad in my case it would jerk the car in that odd lock up position.
Main solution for my setup seemed to be the fuel.
