      I think it's because in South Africa, we had to deal with similar issues and the way he spoke about reparations made me think about the policy we have, called BEE(Black Economic Empowerment). As a South African listening to him speak about reparations, I still find it very relatable within our context.
      Our democracy is still young. Our reform was still quite recent (1994). So my generation still feels and tackles the politics and repercussions of our not too distant past. Even if we were born after 1994.

Slavery stripped people of their names, heritages, wealth, personhood, education, etc. And since then there have concerted efforts to legally repress black Americans up to this very moment. "One does not simply walk into Mordor..." Similarly, one isn't able to just simply "band together" and create sustainable, generational wealth for themselves, their family and entire community

      Ariana M one actually can band together however the problem was that we did it and the people at the top burned us down when they noticed we surpassed them. Ever heard of Black Wall Street? It wasn’t a trend it was our reality. Look at NYC upper west side neighborhood, blacks people owned all that land and we made it great and started to surpass our white counterparts and a fire accidentally burned blocks of it. Look at where our president lives now, Palm Beach, also a place where wealthy black people took over and surpassed our white counterparts. Guess what, they burned that down as well! Kicked us off the island and is now only known to be for old white upper class..

      @Lynda Vance so you think that the show not only writes a full show but then scripts out what he says to the audience when the commercials are going on and they are waiting for the show to come back on air??.. because that is what the "between the scenes" takes are.. if that was the case then why not just make that part of the on air show.. it would fill up more time and make the writers job much more easy.. but oh yeah.. they wrote that out too right?? I do admit that they've probably taken the best of his answers to the audience.. but that's exactly what this thumbnail is titled.. just give the man credit.. he has a level of intelligence that may seem like it's not real but it very well may be..
      And if it is a scripted.. then the timing.. the conveyance of concern and the depth of the answers are pure genius.. and if that makes me naive in your eyes then I'll gladly hold that mantle.. but hey.. you probably think my answer is also a scripted.. lol.. have a great day..

      @robearberbils 3 года назад +5

      @Lynda Vance have you watched more than just this? The crew is walking all around him during them, he moves around sometimes and he's always looking at the audience. He's not reading cue cards of a teleprompter. He has to do that for the show. The range of emotions and everything could not be written and memorized in such a short amount of time. He would have to work on his timing and things like that because he's doing nothing but crowd work. Most of his between the scenes are commentary on what's currently going on. A personal opinion separate of any input from the show. These fun ones that get made into this, these are closer to the likes of a stand up because most of them are stories. He's a natural storyteller, and as a stand-up comic I'm sure that as soon as something happens to him his mind is wondering how he could best tell it on stage, like the Jay-z story. Stories from his childhood he's probably told many times before yo friends and family. But he does genuinely answer questions off the cuff. Idk why people are obsessed with conspiracy theories, and have to think that there's more than meets the eye to everything. Not everything is fixed, not everything on TV is completely fake, not everyone lies about everything. Authentic people exist, more than you'd think (and they may be giving you cancer! Tune in at 10!)
      Also please do tell me all about how television works. Am I to assume that you know from your many years in the entertainment industry or the telecommunications field? Or did you just read some stuff or watch some RUclips videos and think you know everything now?

      The biggest piece of advice I can give is this:
      Begin by asking questions
      This will do many things, but primarily it will force people into a more 'thinking' mindset even if they do not provide good answers to these questions. In most cases this alone will prevent the subject from becoming a 'brick wall' that is impervious to new ideas. Having been primed into thinking critically on the information being presented, they will also critically think on the information they want to present, and that is the key to changing the subject's mind. The right questions it can also set the context in which that critical thinking takes place, further making the subject more malleable to new information.

    I'm a black man in America. Descendant of slaves. Parents lived through Jim Crow and the Civil Rights Era. I had my thoughts lined up for how to talk to that dude on Reparations. And Trevor knocked it outta the park. The golf handicap is a great analogy. I've often compared it to video game difficulty levels. If you don't set up the options at first, you'd never know, right?

    • @alex161
      @alex161 4 года назад

      Let me ask you a question. How should reperations work? I personally don't support them. It's not that I disagree with Trevor. He's right. Jim crow, slavery, all of that had a huge influence in general for black people. But how will reperations fix any of that? How should that work? Who gets reperations? Only descendants from slaves? But what if you can't prove that you are a descendant of a slave? Not everyone has the same possibility to look these things up. What about people who lived under segregation, Jim Crow but not slavery? Should they also get reperations?
      I think reperations sound great, but in all fairness, it won't change anything. It's more symbolic

    • @theGreenGoblin
      @theGreenGoblin 4 года назад +1

      Alex161 When the government wanted American citizens (i.e.: white people) to promote industry and stimulate nationwide growth, they were given massive tax cuts and low interest loans that didn't spike up and inevitably cripple you 5 years in. And it worked. For white people and white people only. Those folks in those small towns? Those farmers in The rust belt? All subsidized by Uncle Sam.
      Reparations in this country should go to any black person who can show family lineage going back to at least Jim Crow. MORE for folks that can prove via ancestry record that there's goes back to chattel slavery. Any white person claiming that it ain't fair just don't know what true balance is, because most of them were born into a world where the scales were ALREADY tipped in their favor. Black folk never got a chance. We didn't get a boost from Uncle Sam. Best we got was "we promise to at least TRY to stop dehumanizing you all so damn much and attempt to give you a baseline neutral shot".
      And all you gotta do is take a look around and see that that shit didn't work. 🤷🏽‍♂️
      In a perfectly fair world, Indigenous people would be getting those reparations too. Yknow, for the genocides and shit.
      And honestly, the migrants in the fucking Holocaust down at the border need to be added to the queue now too. As far as I'm concerned, instant citizenship for the lot of them and government assistance as means of recompense.

    I've been trying to understand what it is that makes me pay attention to Trevor more than any other late night show host, but I think this comments section really sums it up for me. Most late night show hosts, based on my observation, seem to presume that their viewers are just like them when it comes to their perspective, so they host with a typical banter without trying to simplify their humor. So yes, they're extremely funny, but the jokes don't always land towards a bigger scope because not everyone can see their point. It's like an inside joke between intellects. They see political satire as a way to provide constructive criticism; and they see their social critiques as funny. But Trevor seems to see political satire as a way to educate people, and in that way more people get to understand that the state of the U.S. is funny BECAUSE there is something seriously wrong with it. The joke stops being that "WE (the people who are in the know) are joking about why people don't get it" and it becomes "we (all of us now that those who didn't know now know) get it that's why we're joking about it".
