The Chilling Case of 10 Year Old MARY BELL - Newcastle’s West End Child Killer

  • In this video I take a look at the serial killer Mary Bell, whom at only just 11 years old committed two horrific murders of two pre-school boys, in the Scotswood area of Newcastle. She had strangled them both to death.
    I ask the question - Was Mary Bell born evil, or did she commit these crimes due to a damaging upbringing, whereby she was physically and sexually abused from aged 4 by her mothers prostitute clients.

    I was brought up around this area until I was 11, living off Scotswood Road calling them slums is generous, we would play in these derelict houses, breaking windows, creating general mischief etc, being outside was far better than staying in. I lived in a home with an outside toilet, scullery, front room and a single bed room, for 2 adults and 4 children, there was a fifth but my sister died. I remember this case, I was 13, this young girl was a damaged individual due to her upbringing and early life experiences. Being brought up in this area where poverty was all around was challenging and carried a certain stigma, whether she is or was evil I will leave that to the experts but her early childhood experiences may have played a part.

    That was very well researched and put together Eddy. I grew up in the early 70’s knowing what she did, but never really knowing the circumstances of her upbringing.
    I can only imagine her living with a controlling, abusive and probably narcissistic parent only fuelled the sociopathic tendencies that would eventually lead to her committing such terrible acts of cruelty and eventually murder of those two innocent souls.
    A sad story. Thank you for bring the facts to the forefront.

    This is a great video!!! I love your accent!!! It's nice to hear a true crime story from someone who's actually from the area, it makes it a lot more authentic! I've been fascinated by Mary Bell's story since I first discovered it when I was working on a finals project at Cascadia community college! You provided a lot of info that I hadn't known before. I think it was mainly Mary's horrifying and tragic upbringing that made her a psychopath. Well and when you're 11 years old, even for a normal kid, your since of reality is very distorted! So that, plus she was suffering from homicidal tendencies and trauma on top of it! So I would say she couldn't be held completely responsible for her actions. Nobody's born evil, she was made that way. But as of recently, Mary Bell's actually a Grandma now! Her daughter had a kid. So fortunately Mary was able to change and now she has a great life. Which is good, but it's still too bad about those little boys. Betty Bell should've gone to prison for child abuse! It's a very bizarre, demented story!!!!! Awesome video!!!

In this case I get the strong feeling (no science) that nurture played a huge part. As I remember St Margrets Road area was not a slum unlike South Benwell they infact had inside toilets bathrooms and hot water. As for Mary she was taught evil it was practiced on her from the age of four upwards, no child is born evil it is thrust upon them. Just maybe Social Service should have been in the dock they failed Mary and the whole of the community with little consequences to said department.
    Where ever Mary and her family are living I wish them well its a chapter best kept closed for all concerned.

    • @TynesideLife
      @TynesideLife  Год назад

      The context of ‘slum’ was in regards to the area of Scotswood being pulled down during that time, with many dwellings being left derelict and dangerous.
      There was no intention to make comparisons with other areas. I merely painted the picture of Mary’s upbringing 👍🏻

    Mary, or May as she was known, had an upbringing so cruel and abusive that she was a disaster waiting to happen. She was failed by everyone, including the authorities before and after the murders.
    How can a child know right from wrong when her prostitute mother makes them do such horrific things with her customers and tried on 2 or 3 occasions to kill her?
    However, in later years, she has carved out a normal life for herself and her family, finding a partner who understands, loves and protects her.
    She has never broken the law in any way again.

      My Gran lived in the West End with my Mam and Dad, my Mam was pregnant with me at the time. Her terrace was the next one down from Mary's. Everyone knew the Bell's and the tragedy was the reason my Gran moved to Longbenton in 1969.
      She always called Mary "that poor bairn, May." as everyone knew what her mother was up to.
