George Ridley wrote the words to Blaydon Races and Cushie Butterfield. The tune for Blaydon Races is from an old Music Hall piece called “ Brighton “. Blaydon Races has six verses an was written as an advertising jingle for George Ridley. The fifth verse goes: “We flew across the chain bridge reet into Blaydon Toon, the bellman he was callin there, they call him Jackie Broon, aa saw him talkin to some cheps, an them he was persuading, to gan and see Geordie Ridley’s show in the Mechanics Hall at Blaydon”.

Great video, I have lived in Newcastle all my life and I never knew half of the information you are talking about. They really should make local history part of the school curriculum.
My dad is obsessed with the history of the bridges and he wouldn’t stop talking about it when we went into town. It’s great to hear someone with as much passion about the tyneside area as my dad great video eddy mate 😁
Does he know if the horse heads on the top of the civic centre were ever orniments on the top on the king Edward Bridge. An old photo Iv seen of the bridge really looked like the horse heads were on both sides on the top every so far along. I might be wrong but there's nothing on them now and in the photo there was defo orniments on them just could clearly make it out

I wish we still had the Medieval 1250AD stone bridge with shops and houses, it would look stunning but obviously it would of hindered the future industrial age of the Tyne and shipping traffic. I'm sure the Roman bridge at Corbridge (Corstopitum) would of been quite a dis[;ay too. I've not heard of Tommy before until now. Thank you, great vlog, cheers 😃👍
I had an unfortunate accident on the swing bridge in 2007 which resulted in a shattered wrist. Because I was near the Gateshead side I was take to the Queen Elizabeth hospital where they made a complete cock up of the operation resulting in serious infection and further operations. I often thought that if I had been near the Newcastle side, wher I live, I would have been taken to the RVI or Freeman where it might have gone better.
Mmm. Old man might have had v good hearing to know who was coming??? 1st time video of yours just share to me by someone. Just yesterday 7 Jan 2023 I was at those very bridges. Went on high bridge and under to look at the bridge's . My driver took me over the road bridge by car. And I visited the railway station. It was my first time at Newcastle. Always been a bit obsessed with wanting to see them bridge's. And of course the aurfvedersane pet link. The likely lads. Stay lucky with Denis Waterman Jan Francis. Was it the cinder path ? Then well many more. The accent is a fantastic one. Love it along with liverpool and southern Welsh and south African. Accents. And off course hank marvin Bruce Welsh the shadows. The great flood of 1771 was quite ferocious actually! Took out 14 bridges on the Tyne, leading to the growth of Corbridge at the time as it had the closest bridge to Newcastle left standing afterwards. :)
I have always loved the story about Tommy on the bridge. The idea about moving from Gateshead to Newcastle side makes sense. The 1824 vagrants act was in force when he was around and still is today. Made it against the law to beg. I was told he stood in the middle so he didn’t get arrested. What a legend. 😀
Thanks for the message Steven. The conundrum I was trying to figure out was how he knew the police were coming (being blind) and on the Swing Bridge, there is no obvious middle point when stood there. It’s my opinion that he wasn’t as blind as he was claiming and he played on his disabilities to make money. It’s just a theory…

I'm sorry I can't watch this any further than 6 minutes in . Geordie Riley did NOT write The Blaydon Races!! Geordie Ridley did. It was a smack in the face for this much loved character. Geordie also wrote the well known Cushie Butterfield amongst others. I used to go into the bairns' school and sing these songs with pride for the children in the Geordie dialect. Eric Burdon from the group The Animals was Geordie's great great Nephew and I'm sure he would not have been too happy at this gaffI.
