    Lots of ideas and ways coaches try to get us to feel the proper relationship between grip and throwing. Here are a couple grip thoughts on how pressure in the proper places could help us arrive at a great nose angle.

    Game changer. I have been so close for so long, and the minor adjustment to push up equally on the flight plate with my back fingers and down with my thumb made the world of difference.

    I’ve been working on nose angle for years, and even did a clinic with Scott stokely. Can throw about 350 on a good chuck, but nose angle has always been a problem. NOT ONCE has anyone told me to press up on the flight plate to create less nose angle. I’ve been gripping the inner rim so hard with minimal gains. I’ll try this. Thanks Pete!!!!

    The back loaded grip changed the game for me.
    Started implementing it last week after getting the tip from DG Spin Dr.
    Wrist stays much looser thru the hit, nose angle much improved and consistent, and release is super clean almost every time.
    Because of this, my accuracy went up, and so did distance slightly.
    Spent the 1st year of my journey focusing so hard on the pointer finger, and thumb with various grip styles. All it took was changing where I focused pressure from front of disc to rear, and it absolutely changed the game for me.
    May not work for everyone's hands, but for me, it did.

    Your explanation is awesome. I liked that you used a translucent disc to illustrate what it looks like from top and bottom. I also like the thought you shared about pushing up with back three fingers and how the index hooks into itself versus into the palm.
    I had read a thread on a disc golf review forum (or some other Reddit-like forum) that if the fingers do their job it is possible to throw without the thumb even touching the disc. When trying it, I did find nose down releases though the wobble was higher and I would early release if trying to throw faster. Do you have a recommended amount of pressure for index finger and other fingers? How minimal does the thumb force need to be? With backloading a grip, does the middle finger produce the most pressure? Thank you again for a well explained concept!

Started playing a year and a half ago and everything you said was spot on especially how holding the disc wrong will affect the shot quality in different ways. I love this video. It somwthing of a breakthrough i had recently where i switched to a modified power grip slightly fanning out my middle two fingers. Something i had resisted doing because of the habbit of the traditional, front loaded power grip made it seem awkward. However all of my flights were now doing what i wanted them to do especially throwing flat and on an annie angle. I could tell that all of a sudden they were hitting the correct angles and flying true to what i wanted. Previously it was a struggle, especially on annie, for my flights not to come out early and fade. After analyzing it at home i could feel the different muscles engaging and a loss of tension in my forearm that naturally wanted to throw the disc nose up. Withouth increasing my arm speed i have more distance and a greater ability to hit my lines because the disc is now flying on the correct angles. Great video

    These are my thoughts from my recent experiments with grip:
    The swing plane has to be good before trying to fix the grip. You can fix the grip, but if the swing plane is bad, the disc can still end up a) nose up, or b) off-axis in some other way (a different axis). Either way will produce excess wobble, no matter how good the grip.
    Cues like pouring the coffee and turning the key need to be used to get the disc in the right place, and not indiscriminately. You can go too far with wrist supination, ulnar deviation, and other form tweaks and end up with worse results. If a cue isn't needed, don't use it.
    Also I think people can experiment with how they align the disc in their palm. Disc Golf Neil is making a series of videos on this, where he's trying different disc alignments against the fingers and palm of the disc. You should check those videos out, if you haven't already.
    I personally throw what I call "fully-loaded" grip, which is probably a mid-loaded grip, because I don't try to front load or backload any more. I just try to keep the disc firmly in the palm, and at the right angle before throwing.
    Lastly I also call the way I place the fingers a "modified _power_ grip" (not "modified _fan_ grip") because I slightly fanned out my fingers from the power grip I used to use on all discs, and I added a lot more control without any loss in speed or distance.
    Great video, Pete!

    • @DiscgliderPete
      @DiscgliderPete  4 месяца назад +2

      Thank you for sharing your view and how you grip.
      I agree that so much of the swing plane and the like are driven by other form factors.
      I do believe that had I been show this when I first started, being athletic, the rest of my body would have naturally followed and fallen into way better natural habits, and I would have had minor tweaks to get my form situated. Instead, it set me back probably 2years after I had to rework my form.

      When holding the disc in the power pocket position, imagine the edge closest to you is 6 O’clock 🕕 and your hand and grip is basically covering 11:00 -12:30.
      The “official nose” of the disc is at the
      7 O’clock 🕖 position at this point.
      As you pull through and swing to the hit point, the momentum cause the disc to rotate out of the hand and that 7 O’clock point rotates out and around and then becomes the lead edge….the nose

    I'm definitely guilty of pushing my wrist down too hard with the coffee method. I've been doing it for my entire three year long discgolf career, and when I still got nose up I try to fix it by pushing my wrist down even harder, which probably only amplifies the problem. A bad circle is created.

    On a more serious note, won’t a backloaded grip give you less spin and potentially less distance?

    • @DiscgliderPete
      @DiscgliderPete  4 месяца назад +1

      That is a good question.
      From all the tech disc data I’ve been getting from thousands of throws, weather with a power grip or modified fan grip, a back loaded grip generates more spin, and if done correctly helps drive the nose angle down at the release point. These are all benefits to distance and accuracy.

    • @Bushcrawler
      @Bushcrawler 4 месяца назад +1

      @@DiscgliderPete thanks for the reply! I was always under the impression one needed a front loaded hinge type grip to generate the most spin so I’ve always just tried to do that (except with discs like the MVP glitch where I exclusively use backloaded grip to get way more stability and consistency). Will for sure try it on the fairways and drivers too.

    Okay, I told myself that I was going to watch to the last word spoken before coming to an opinion or leaving any comment, and it was the right call. I'll try to be brief, but my opinion of RUclips DG content, especially anything, "how to," related has traversed a wide spectrum, starting at naive curiosity, and most recently landed at cynical and fiery contempt. When I read a disc golf thumbnail title that has anything, "simple," "effortless," or "over-night," I have visions of grabbing them by their scrawny necks....woo-saah... breathe in ... nevermind, point is there's no short cuts and everyone claiming to have that one tip or "3 steps to...blah, blah, blah," are either speaking vaguely about their swing thoughts/feel, or they are just saying the same shit 150 other people have said before them - grip, reach back, timing, form...blah, blah, blah. Your explanation and demonstration of how to apply the power grip is something I am excited to implement in my very next field session. I've never had the forefinger curl and the other fingers pressing up into the flight plate described in that way before. You went that extra, last, but crucial step in mentioning the grip needing to be back loaded. Light bulb moment for sure. It feels good and make sense just holding a disc here on my couch so I'm hopeful it'll help. You're the man Pete!

    • @DiscgliderPete
      @DiscgliderPete  4 месяца назад

      Thank you, And I’m so glad that my neck ain’t scrawny! Lol
      To be fair, watching how to is very hard for me also. Since I do coaching, I have so many videos sent to me, asking my opinion on what’s being said. Years ago I made a significant swing change, It took a solid year and a half for it to become second nature, and I’m a decent professional, so I get the sentiments you shared.
      Really, I don’t believe that there is a fast simple fix to anything disc golf form related. We are creatures of habit and learning new things takes a lot of effort and time. Thanks for giving the content a chance:)
