I always found it weird that the enchantment of Umbra was that it captures souls into soul gems, given the sword is meant to absorb the actual souls. Perhaps that's how the Nerevarine, the Champion of Cyrodiil and the Last Dragonborn are able to resist the sword. They always seem to have their pack full of soul gems after all.
Hmm... Be cool if in TES VI Umbra could work like the Dawnguard rune axe, where the more souls it absorbs the more deadly the blade becomes? Without the daily reset of course. Should also be extremely difficult to obtain, quest wise. Picture having to slay an enemy like the Ebony warrior to obtain the sword. Could even have this warrior only show up after the player reaches level 50 or so. Good way to balance the game, so the player cant just obtain and cheese Umbra at level 1, proceeding to slay everything in sight with the sword.

In my most recent build, I found Umbra and, with an abundance of caution, locked it away. When I faced off against the Volkihar, and saw for the first time the power of Lord Harkon, I retrieved Umbra in search of power to defeat these enemies of man and mer. Unfortunately, during one attack I made on an undercover vamp, my character was influenced by the blade and slaughtered the beast, but also three innocents. In disgust, Hrun Fire-Heart cast the sword into the ocean far north of skyrim and again took up his steel greatsword. Eventually he would get the strength he needed, finally accepting the beast blood of the Companions to destroy Lord Harkon and defeat the Volkihar. Still unsure that a true nord should follow Hircine and partake of the beast blood, he cast it off, going on a great pilgrimage to cleanse himself of his heavy heart and soul. During that trip he discovered the armor of the divine crusader, and took up his mantle. Eventually he too found the Paladins Blade, and finally he was cleansed of his past sins, free to take up the sword and armor of a true knight to defend the innocent wherever he could.
Considering the Skyforge couldn't destroy the Ebony Blade, I don't think its up to the task. The journal that accompanied the Blade stated the fires of the Skyforge seemed to cool when they meet with the Ebony Blade.
An Umbra playthrough sounds like it could be fun....where you have to pass a Will check each time you encounter someone. Fail, and Umbra takes control. "...Violence!"
One of my characters uses Umbra because it is his best defense against dragons. He takes comfort in the knowledge that while his mortal soul will be bound to Umbra, his beast spirit (for he is a werewolf) will be free to roam Hircine's hunting grounds.
The Last DB is way more powerful and strong minded then its shown in game. For eg The game tells you that the DB can absorb a dragons' soul resulting in its power and knowledge integrate with the DBs. In the "batlle of the thu'ums" (what I like to call) or the Miraak boss fight, Miraak uses a special thu'um "Zii los di du" DB learns all thu'ums that Miraak know except for this. IMO LDB gains all knowledge after absorbing Miraaks' soul hence the knowledge of the thu'um as well.. couple this with Bend will and the overall pool of Dragon shouts..This alone makes LDB the most Powerful mortal to have even walked on Nirn. So if I were Umbra, This is the strongest puppet/ally/thrawl that I can find in an eternity so would like to keep them for as little ng as its feasible.
You know, for some reason this makes me want an Elder Scrolls game where you take Umbra and get to kill the Daedric Princes with it, one by one wiping them out. Maybe an end to the current calpa (probably have that wrong) or the start of a new era or something.
Yeah, and I also doubt a mere mortal could trick the literal Daedric prince of trickery himself. But Sheogorath though, who bested Hircine and Vaernima in their own games, can surely deceive Clavicus.
This was an excellent way to tell the story of Umbra. Unfortunately the Champion and dragonborn. Most likely never took part or ever kept the sword themself. Reason why telling the tail like this allows the side story to continue as if it was Canon itself. It is also to note, Umbra depends on the will of the being themself if control is quick or slow. The stronger the will the longer it took for a being for fall victim to Umbra's will. So incase of the Champion and the Dragonborn. It is indeed possible the Umbra to not influence them so quickly unlike other victims.
I doubt the sword would be able to influence the Dragonborn at all. Remember, Dragons are meant to conquer and control. They are will personified, and the Dragonborn has the knowledge and power of countless dragons. Plus, he knows the Bend Will shout, which makes it likely that he could just uno reverse Umbra and keep it under his control forever. If he can do it to stones and dragons, he could do it to Umbra.
This just reminds me of something like SoulEdge (the sword). It's something about a cursed sword that amuses me in that it changes the whole... " Entity" of a person or character, to a vastly different person. Then afterward, they struggle to go back to who they were after the damage has been dealt... or they cant. Then sometimes they want to repent for all the Sins they did although it wasn't under their own will.
This is Umbra, its got my back. It can cut through a whole bandit camp in one sword stroke, just like mowin the lawn. I'd advise not getting killed by it, it traps the souls of its victims.
Wanted to clap so hard! Amazing job bringing this piece of lore to life through sceneplay. Umbra is a Muramasa sword for sure in trope, though unlike the over exaggerated cursed Katanas of old is actually quite real in TES lore. Also I don't think I ever got this even on my "Many Voices One Body" style playthrough of becoming a Daedric collector! Nice to know even without mods there's still some treasures out there.
This is one of my favorite Elder Scrolls artifacts. Rings and necklaces are all well and good; goldbrand is fine, if you're not sick of katanas, but I mean, it just burns. It burns a *lot*, but It doesn't get up and carve a piece of your kingdom out to claim for itself.
I’m a big fan of the black star. I just love the idea of walking around with a persons soul in your pocket. My headcanon is that every once in a while they gain the strength to scream a bit so you have to deal with awkward looks
I was once in dragonsbridge and decided to empty out my inventory so I could actually run. Guessing everyone has had that issue before. I drop all my stuff I don’t want anymore and this kid gives me back a shield I wasn’t even using. Like “no I don’t want this back I’m trying to get rid of it”
Love this vid! personally the umbra from Elder Scrolls: Oblivion is top tier and looks better than the Skyrim version.. miss that game.. there’s something about Oblivion that just reminds me of a simpler easier time in life. Can only play a game for the first time, once.
Ever since that creation was added to the creation club back in special edition... I've always thought that umbra had just screwed himself By getting into the possession of the last dragonborn.... After all it took everything the ideal masters of the soul carn had To gain limited control over durnehviir The dragon.... in body the last dragonborn may be A human elf or beast race Depending on player choice.... But in soul they are a dragon.... Likely umbra would be able to talk To the last dragonborn But would be unable to influence The legendary hero...
Abso-fraking-lutely enjoyed watching this Awesome Skyrim vid of the Umbra It does look like an Awesome Greatsword right there In some way, it reminds me a little bit of Soul Edge from the Soul Calibur series. But that's just me, though
OoooooOOOOOOoooooh!!!! That was a dark cryptic story. I don’t know how I didn’t come across it when I played Skyrim. Makes me want to go back and play it again. After I finish Kingdoms of Amalur, of course.
Umbra has always been such a mysterious weapon and I believe that is what makes it such an amazing artifact. I also love your animation, it has become more and more beautiful with each video.
I love how this character eas just a random side boss in morrowind that was such a pain in the ass that this sword umbra has become the sepheroth of elder scrolls.
For actual history, in morrowind it was just an enchanted sword of a great warrior who figured that given his accomplishments at this point he may as well be named after his weapon. Yagrum Bagarn says the sword was enchanted by a witch to steal souls but the sword would later be retconned into being a clavicus vile artifact.
Whomsoever takes this blade shall wield power eternal, just as the blade rends flesh, so must power scar the spirit... - A insightful Dwemer on the blade Umbra.
I think that Sheogorath's motive for making the sword would be that Sheogorath is the true enemy of the Daedra. Probably that's because he wants revenge for his tormented origins or because he wants to dissuade them from doing something like what they did to create him again but either way, he's always taking on the Daedra. He never does it by directly picking a fight--that wouldn't be the smartest idea--but he always makes them feel like they've lost something to him by manipulating their unique psychology against them.
Personally, I like to think Umbra is a ghost of its former self after Vile took back most of his power from it, hence why it formed near a dying man instead of a champion. I think the dragonborn and most champions are safe from its influence. Either way, I very much doubt Hermaeus Mora would let a sword claim his champion from him.
Herma Mora has no claim on the Dragonborn's soul anyway. In fact, I'd honestly say by the time of Dragonborn, the DB has ascended past the Daedric Prince's influence. I mean, who gets Miraak's soul when he dies? Not the omnipotent tentacle God who supposedly claimed him as his champion, it's you. You absorb Miraak's soul and all the dragon souls he earned because you're Dragonborn yourself. So if Mora had trouble keeping Miraak in line, how is he gonna do anything to the Dragonborn who just absorbed Miraak's power on top of his own? TLDR: Mora talks a lot of shit but you can just tell him to piss off because he has no real claim on you. He calls you his champion but you can just tell him no and leave.
I actually just got this sword by pure chance. I had no idea about it or it’s location. So when I looted it, I was blown away at its power. Its all I use now!

Considering the Skyforge couldn't destroy the Ebony Blade, I don't think its up to the task. The journal that accompanied the Blade stated the fires of the Skyforge seemed to cool when they meet with the Ebony Blade.
@@natelax1367 well the nazguls kinda hold the air space so...
@@lazilycatharticone4191 Yes. But according to the unofficial elder scrolls wiki, Umbra can be tempered with ebony. So it could be destroyed
So it's the Soul Edge. Got it.
I bet few people realise this is an Easter egg to one of the most evil and powerful swords in fantasy stormbringer from moorcock’s Elric books.
I always thought that Ebony Blade was a nod to Moorcock.
@@valok252 I think both of them are, but the soul steal thing is definitely to stormbringer,
What about Roberts Salvatore - The Two Blades?
Legends say, that even now, Umbra stays waiting in a cloth sack, in a shitty shack somewhere in Skyrim.
The video footage + editing was superb in this one 👍🏻
Fun trick If you put it in someone’s inventory they go insane
Anything you enchant with paralyze and a black soul gem is the strongest sword in Skyrim lol
So my trusty chillrend. . Has to be the best.
We all know we just put Umbra up on a mount in some unprotected house out in the wilderness XD
That was such a great video. You absolutely brought the story to life!
You know, for some reason this makes me want an Elder Scrolls game where you take Umbra and get to kill the Daedric Princes with it, one by one wiping them out. Maybe an end to the current calpa (probably have that wrong) or the start of a new era or something.
The secretly Sheogorath idea makes a lot of sense. He’s not above ruining other prince’s days just for giggles or to cause general pandemonium.
Yeah, and I also doubt a mere mortal could trick the literal Daedric prince of trickery himself. But Sheogorath though, who bested Hircine and Vaernima in their own games, can surely deceive Clavicus.
@@rafliavriza3651 this is literally the reason Barbars exists, because on his own Vile can’t be trusted to not get into situations exactly like this
So a Frostmourne knock-off, gotcha.
My favorite sword in the game, lore wise. Dude….. sentient flying island. Most excellent!
This is so underrated, thankyou
Well dome editing, well done narration just well done.
Man, the new SoulEdge looks great! :) (Great video, btw. Love deep dive lore!)
Nah the sword I made after chugging an unholy amount of potions is probably far more dangerous. The legendary "Pointy sharp thing"
Two Umbra-related videos in one week? Noice.
The quality of these videos keep improving, both script and visually, the extra effort you guys put into every video is really appreciated!!
Hypothesis: The Ebonarm of Redguard folklore is someone wielding Umbra without succumbing.
RUclips didn't notify me about this video!? 👿 What a crime, I love this cursed sword and it's terrifying tales.
This is Umbra, its got my back. It can cut through a whole bandit camp in one sword stroke, just like mowin the lawn. I'd advise not getting killed by it, it traps the souls of its victims.
If only Mephala's sword was even half this interesting.
"Corruption" is such an ugly word. We prefer... "a mutually agreed upon merging of the minds"~
My character: I sense a disturbance.... into the cabinet you go! La la la la! Off to collect another articaft and never use it!
FUDGEMUPPET: DO A PODCAST ON ALL OF THE JOKE/MEME/COMEDY CHARACTERS OF THE ELDER SCROLLS SERIES!
I feel like the video title should be "Is this Tamriel's most Dangerous Sword?"
This is awesome I have a whole new respect for Umbra now
A'tor vs Umbra be like
Now i can become Clavicus Vile’s vessel of destruction with his dog as a follower and sword at the hip
Amazing video, whats that horned mask btw?
Alternate clavicus vile mask mod.
When you think about it Clavicus Vile just be taking L's from himself
This is one of my favorite Elder Scrolls artifacts. Rings and necklaces are all well and good; goldbrand is fine, if you're not sick of katanas, but I mean, it just burns. It burns a *lot*, but It doesn't get up and carve a piece of your kingdom out to claim for itself.
I’m a big fan of the black star. I just love the idea of walking around with a persons soul in your pocket. My headcanon is that every once in a while they gain the strength to scream a bit so you have to deal with awkward looks
The witch, "corangulations you played yourself"
These are some beautiful machinamas guys. Props
I was once in dragonsbridge and decided to empty out my inventory so I could actually run. Guessing everyone has had that issue before. I drop all my stuff I don’t want anymore and this kid gives me back a shield I wasn’t even using. Like “no I don’t want this back I’m trying to get rid of it”
Nice that the Creation Club content became canon
Love this vid! personally the umbra from Elder Scrolls: Oblivion is top tier and looks better than the Skyrim version.. miss that game.. there’s something about Oblivion that just reminds me of a simpler easier time in life. Can only play a game for the first time, once.
Aye, now that there's a beautiful sword. Like a sliver of midnight.
I’m gonna watch this on the bus tomorrow to school love y’all keep up the good work
Beaumont, Hugh Beaumont, Tony Dow, and Jerry Mathers as the Dragonborn.
Mmmm yes more content from the best TES lore channel.
Abso-fraking-lutely enjoyed watching this Awesome Skyrim vid of the Umbra
It does look like an Awesome Greatsword right there
In some way, it reminds me a little bit of Soul Edge from the Soul Calibur series. But that's just me, though
This muppet could make a video about a random rock in Skyrim and we would all watch it.
OoooooOOOOOOoooooh!!!! That was a dark cryptic story. I don’t know how I didn’t come across it when I played Skyrim. Makes me want to go back and play it again. After I finish Kingdoms of Amalur, of course.
It was only added with the Anniversary Edition. It wasn't a vanilla sword.
You know after all these years I realized the Masque of Clavicus Vile resembles that of Guy Fawkes…
For actual history, in morrowind it was just an enchanted sword of a great warrior who figured that given his accomplishments at this point he may as well be named after his weapon.
Yagrum Bagarn says the sword was enchanted by a witch to steal souls but the sword
would later be retconned into being a clavicus vile artifact.
Whomsoever takes this blade shall wield power eternal, just as the blade rends flesh, so must power scar the spirit...
- A insightful Dwemer on the blade Umbra.
This is propaganda. I've used this sword for years and I've been the same Umbra I've always been. Never changed one bit.
damn.. nice usage of Mandorogasprouts' statues
The Sheogorath thing makes Perfect sense NGL
Very true
