Imagine, you are a Neanderthal and you are freezing in your cave during the winter months. There is no meat left on the carcass of last weeks kill. You take a bone and begin harvesting the marrow. As you suck the last morsels of sustenance a hallow single note whistle tells you that it is almost empty. Then, as you adjust your grip, your finger slides off of a foramen and the whistle's pitch changes. This delights you as you finger the foramen's whole creating a two-note trill capturing the immediate attention of your cavemates.

They're just finding random ancient instruments.
Many of these instruments are still used, that's how we know what they sound like, or we have them in museums if they are not still used. Look into Music Archeology, it's interesting

You neglected rattles entirely, not to mention most very old drums. The only saving grace is the Neanderthal flute. But the flute, however ancient, was only the "lead guitar" backed up by the rhythm section of drums and rattles. I dare anybody who hears those 3 instruments played around a campfire not to kick off their shoes and dance. That's hardwired into us.
