  • Cool Guitar Tones with the EHX Electro Harmonix KEY9 Effects Pedal
    Today's demo showcases the truly unique and crazy sounds you can coax out of the Electro-Harmonix KEY 9 guitar pedal. Emulating many famous electric pianos (such as the Wurlitzer 200a, Fender Rhodes and more) and also a healthy dose of randomness (mallets, vibraphone, steel drums), the EHX KEY9 really adds a unique and cool layer of versatility to any guitar player's rig.
    I'll take you through my favorite settings with all nine preset models on the EHX KEY 9 pedal to show you what it does best! Recorded direct into my DAW -- no mics or amplification involved. This demo is Agile AL-3010SE guitar----EHX KEY9----Sonar Cakewalk.

    This is probably one of, if not the best actual demo of this pedal. Thank you!

    The problem is, that most guitar players are playing with that kind of pedal just like a guitar player. You need to think different and play piano like (without slides or vibrato ! ) voicings like drop 3 and drop 2&4 or drop 2&3 chords. But anyway this is a good video to get an idea about the sound.

    The best demo of this that I have seen yet. I think with some other pedals or a nice amp to warm it up you can really get some tones then.

    • @MattTheGuitarGuy
      @MattTheGuitarGuy  8 лет назад +3

      +Daniel Askins Thanks Daniel! I recorded this direct to my DAW, mainly because I've noticed that when using the Key9 with a regular guitar amp, it's almost too muddy to really be usable. And since it's lacking a dedicated treble knob, it's hard to dial in a tone that works with your amp's EQ that won't sound harsh when the pedal is off.
      I really like what the Key9 is capable of when recording direct...but I'm on the fence as to whether or not I'm going to return it at this point.

      Matt, have you tried a booster and/or a compressor before the pedal when using a guitar amp?

    Great demo! It sounds like a lot of fun but maybe only in certain settings. There's probably a lot of space for it in some of this new electronic rock with an 80's twist

    • @MattTheGuitarGuy
      @MattTheGuitarGuy  8 лет назад

      +itsERedmon Definitely! It poses a unique challenge because you have to think (and play) like a keyboard player in order to get the most accurate sounds out of it. Just grabbing a pick and shredding scales isn't gonna sound great with the Key9, but jazzy stuff and fingerstyle playing comes off sounding really neat.

    I'm still trying to figure out how the 9 series work. Is it sample based? Or does it model the audio?
    What' the technology behind it? Does it pitch-track, and re-synthesise the audio? Or does it model the initial incoming audio?

    • @MattTheGuitarGuy
      @MattTheGuitarGuy  10 месяцев назад

      Agreed -- it was definitely a bit of challenge. You really have to think like a pianist/keyboard player in order to make the most of it, it's not going to work to its full potential if you play it like you would a guitar.
      I really enjoyed how much the Key9 made me think outside of the "guitar" box while I had it.

    Does the pedal track well? What did you think about its ease of usability?
    EDIT: does it sound weird if you strum with a pick? I thought this pedal would sound messy if you play the guitar normally and just merely turn the pedal on.

    • @MattTheGuitarGuy
      @MattTheGuitarGuy  7 лет назад

      For what it costs, yeah the pedal actually does track pretty well. It does depend on the setting you're using though -- some perform better than others, while all of them perform well enough to use in a recording or gigging environment.
      As for strumming, this pedal will require you to adapt your style -- single note runs, arpeggios, and Travis picking are what it handles best. Strumming chords will get muddy and flubby quick, and the pedal may not track all of the notes in a chord voicing if played simultaneously.

      The same can be said when they emulate guitar with a keyboard in Ableton and such

    • @jgomez7183
      @jgomez7183 5 лет назад

      VintageSH yeah but I’m saying is the guitar notes are played differently than a keyboard. To be convincing you should select the notes played by a keyboard player left hand and right hand.
