@@Manganese25If he wanted to kill himself, why go through the extra trouble of dragging his uncle out into the desert?
His disappearance was also way to quick for a premeditated suicide, his uncle would have heard the shot from a firearm.
The scenario that would fit the best with suicide would be he wandered off into the desert, found an outcrop where his body would be hidden from view and his scent would be mostly untraceable, and killed himself using some method that preserved his scent long enough that searchers might miss the vultures that would inevitably find him. This is highly highly unlikely, even with Kai researching the area beforehand.
A more gruesome thought, and the one I find most likely, was that Kai was kidnapped or a third party was involved with his disappearance.
Hopefully it’s the later, as that means there’s a chance he’s still alive. Either way, keep your spirits high until you get closure on the case

As an Apache from the area, I can tell you there are a lottttt of stories about those mountains.
Grandma says you don’t tell non Apaches our business or stories but she came from a different time, I think it’s good medicine to share experience.
She said the mountain spirits live up there, the Gaan.
Story goes there’s some powerful energies there, something old in the rock and needs to be protected.
They say a secret band of Apache guarded the area from outsiders, accounts deem this to be true.
It was speculated we were protecting the precious metals under the mountain but my Grandmother said this wasn’t true, she said we were guarding the area because they had a pact with something under the mountain.
Something that didn’t want to be dug up.
Now, getting away from the superstition about the mountains lol the reason why so many people die up there nowadays is chiefly due to the fact the temperatures would sore up in the mountains.
Out of nowhere it would shoot up, a bit of the frog in the boiling water scenario.
That coupled with a deadly mistake of taking only enough water to get up there but not enough water to get back down.
You MUST bring double your water, if it takes 3 gallons to get up there then you will need 3 gallons to make it back down alive.

Thank you for sharing your grandma's beliefs. There are a lot of weird places like that mountain with native legends just as you described. Skin Walker Ranch immediately came to mind. I think they're evil spirits. It sounds like the Apaches understood this about the mountain, and tried to protect people from spirits best left alone.

I grew up with Khayman. We were in a "band" together in highschool and I invited him to many of my sleep overs in middle school. The last time we hung out would have been around 2018 right after my ex and I broke up, we all decided we needed to have a night together with other close friends. We met at a friend's house and basically stayed up all night drinking, smoking and playing guitar. I know for me personally that memory helped me out of my funk at the time. Ive lived in Arizona all of my life. These people get dehydrated and lost, everytime. People underestimate the heat, they underestimate the terrain, and how similar it all looks once you’re lost. I’ve experienced it directly. When you’re higher in the mountains all of the washes and trails are tight. But once you pick one, it will twist, wind and drop you into a canyon that can spit you out on the opposite side of the mountain, sometimes 20 miles away by the time you get to the rolling hills. If you don’t have a solid gps unit, and plenty of water, don’t go in to any of the sky islands.

The area is definitely very unsettling at night. But 1 - it's the desert, and 2 - there are so many stories and folklore that if you know that going in it of course will be on your mind. I went backpacking there a few years ago.. we hiked in several miles around midnight. I was the slowest and in the back and it was beyond scary for me. I truly felt like someone was behind me the whole time. When we camped I had the worst nightmares of animals outside our tent just watching us. It felt like the mountains could see us. But again.. there is a lot going on psychologically that causes this. Yes there are people living out there and it can be very dangerous. But I think a lot of that fear is from the stories we have heard over the years. In this case I am a little confused about the uncle and wish we could have heard more from him and his side of things. Not pointing any blame just feels like since he was there and the last to see Khay it would be a very valuable piece of information.

Another mysterious death associated with the Lost Dutchman's Mine came very recently when the Official Archaelogist of the State of Arizona mysteriously and suddenly died. He had (it's still there) a RUclips channel called the Legend of the Superstition Mountains that documented he and his partner's quest to find the missing gold. But he wasn't some huckster promising it for sure even existed, he just knew the intimate history of the story and enjoyed documenting all knowledge surrounding the topic, as well as dispelling the myths. And you know what? I remember in one episode him showing and talking about the Needle. I recall him saying that there was some feature about it that created an optical illusion that made it deadly, and that it had claimed many lives before.

But in other ways I can also see how it could seem like a good idea & end up bringing you down even further. Anxiety is so wishy-washy & can make you do things you don’t actually want to do because you just feel so incredibly lost/un-motivated in the moment; you end up thinking ffs, maybe if I do something completely different I’ll feel that enthusiasm I once had again.

In January 2018, my son and his girlfriend were involved in a head on collision with an elderly couple. The elderly couple we driving a newer full size pick up when they got a patch of ice and drifted in to my son's lane hitting his S-10 head on. Because of the conditions, both drivers were going well below the posted stopped limit, however, accidents happen. The elderly couple walked away with minor injuries. The S-10 looked like a smashed aluminum can and both my son and his girlfriend were airlifted directly from the scene to the nearest trauma hospital. My son's wallet flew in the crash so he was labeled as a John Doe and I was not notified until about 3 hours after by his girlfriend family. Luckily I hadn't been on Facebook that morning or I will I would have seen was the wreck and the video of the rescue and people talking about how they both died. Glad I didn't find out that way. They both had major extensive injuries and went through numerous surgeries within the first 3 days but thankfully they are both alive and well. What I think got me the most after I knew they were going to be ok were the heartless cruel people that posted about how they got what they deserve for speeding and being reckless in bad weather and endangering the lives of the elderly couple. And that is just the mild comments I read on the fire department facebook page. These people didn't even bother to get their facts straight from the post above what they wrote. It added insult to injury and i was so furious. I was reading these posts from my son's bedside at the trauma hospital smile waiting to see if he was going to live. I wanted to lash out but I maintained the presence of mind to calmly write that that no one has been speeding or being reckless and that there was no fault bringing to anyone. It was just a tragic accident. I also reminded people that these stories were people that had families trying to cope with what had happened and were reading these posts.
I was lucky. I still have my son. My heart breaks for this mom dealing with everything that is going on. She shouldn't have to deal with the cruelty of people as well. I will be praying for you and your family and for the best possible outcome going forward. ❤️

"His wife must've been sleeping with the UPS guy" haha. Meanwhile he was covering the route of a driver who was on vacation. I think people need to invent their own explanation for comfort. I live here and have hiked these mountains many times. I have never heard about this but have heard about lots of other people going missing in the Superstitions over the years. You always feel like you're being watched. There are tons of mineshafts and caves overhead. The summer heat often means that trails are closed. The heat is just too brutal. I would never hike here alone. Weavers Needle is usually a pretty busy trail and very visible but I don't know what it's like in 120 degrees. There is a 17 mile hike he could've veered off to. I've done that hike too. Parts of it are difficult and the trail is difficult to find at times. Monsoons are no joke here. Praying for this family.

My great uncle went in with 4 other guys; when they were shot at by the Apache's he told his companions time to go home boys. He was friends with the Apache and he told them that was the only thing reason that received warning shots, other wise they'd all be dead. To the Apaches, the Superstitions were and are sacred.

The video does say the uncle looked for him and saw that he was heading southeast, he thought he was just scoping out a place to watch the sunset, so the uncle waited in the car for him to return, but Khay never returned. The video doesnt explain what happened right after but from his mom's comments on here, there were other people at the Vista point that were there at the view point and saw his uncle and Khay before he disappeared. I agree, it's very important to acknowledge the struggles someone faces when they have mental health issues. Depression is not a joke... It's a mental illness that claims so many lives. Sometimes people will make plans and try to look like everything's alright, but deep down nothing is okay. It's really hard to tell what's going on in a person's head, even if it's someone you're close to. I find that there are lots of kind people who bottle up their darkest feelings, all because they're worried about how their loved ones would feel about them. They're scared they would burden others.
I obviously don't know Khay nearly enough to say anything about him, but the way people describe him tells me that he had a heart of gold. He also didn't seem to understand his true value, and didn't appreciate himself enough. I could imagine a man like that not wanting to "burden" his loved ones with very dark thoughts, like suicide...
Regardless of what happened to him, I hope his family is able to find answers. And if he's no longer with us, I hope his remains can be brought home, and that his family can say a proper goodbye to him. The ability to visit a loved one's grave sometimes aids in healing.
I also hope the family knows that if he did commit suicide, not being able to stop it isn't their fault. After all, it's clear that he was loved very much. Sometimes people are forced to fight battles that are too hard to win. Sometimes the pain just gets too much, and people get tired. They just want to finally stop fighting, and just rest, be rid of the pain. It's incredibly sad, but it's nobody's fault.
