I am grateful you made this video for people that have to undergo an MRI-guided biopsy. I couldn't conceive how they would manage such a thing; all I knew is that in a MRI the patient is moved into a tight fitting tube with a lot of clanging and banging going on! LOL!
This procedure is much more painful and uncomfortable than they discuss in this video. I’ve been through two of them- once at a Penn facility. When I asked, weeks before my second one, knowing how bad it was, for iv sedation, I was scoffed at. The lidocaine shot is not a pin prick. It is so shockingly painful that a technician is there to hold you down. You can see her in this video.
I had a breast MRI which was barely tolerable. When my breast specialist wanted an MRI guided biopsy........I refused. She did an open biopsy under general anesthesia. Only way to go.
The "needle" that they are using in this video looks more like a trocar, not a needle. Much larger than a needle.
I've watched other mri breast biopsy videos that show the amount of tissue actually removed during this procedure. The biopsies looked more like a lumpectomy.....ALOT of tissue is removed. I noticed in this video the amount of tissue was not shown.
Personally, as a woman with spine issues, i cannot imagine that i could tolerate laying on my abdomen for that period of time. My back hurt just watching this video.

I went through two of them and they’re horrible. I requested Iv sedation at a Penn Center weeks prior to my second biopsy and was scoffed at. First you have to lie with your sternum resting on what feels like a block of wood for up to 45-60 minutes with your breast compressed and impaled after being stabbed in the breast several times with stinging lidocaine. “Pin prick”- what bologna. Do you see that technician standing there? She is there to place her hands on your back and literally hold you down when they stick your breast with the needle. And do you see the size and thickness of the instrument they then stick in your breast? And they expect you to go through this without so much as a Xanax.
How common are patients asking for IV sedation?

I just had this done this past Thursday. I think I was more terrified of doing it then the actual procedure. I cried and everything...but I think the situation itself was just overwhelming for me.
It wasn't bad at all. The numbing was literally a pinch and I really didn't feel them with the process. My nerves were a mess and the positioning was the worse. I don't know if it was because I'm heavy chested and what they call dense as to why I didn't feel anything but I'm glad I got it done and I'm waiting on my results now. So it's over and time to focus on whatever the next step is.
