This single malt whisky was produced at Nikka's original distillery in Yoichi. It is traditionally produced there according to the method of Masataka Taketsuru from Scotland and stored in oak barrels before bottling.

Really nice video Jason. Thw history of Japanese whisky was very interesting. My favorite Japanese whisky is Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky. It is so delicate, but with such flavor. The nose isn't half bad either. Such a delite to drink.

This used to be 5,000 yen in Japan when you could find it. It has now risen to about 8,000 yen. This is still one of my favorites despite the price rise. As they expand, Nikka uses coal to directly fire only some of their whiskies at this point. It does make a big difference. When I first attempted to drink whisky around 2005, I picked up a bottle of Nikka Yoichi 10 (as well as Macallan 12 an 18) thanks to Michael Jackson's book on whisky. As a newbie, I couldn't handle peat but the Yoichi 10 was just right -- very complex and drinkable. I've gone up to visit Yoichi a couple of times but the last time I did the 10 was a bit anemic, though a cask strength 10 was outstanding. In 6 weeks I'll head off to Miyagikyo for the first time. Looking forward to that! Well done review -- spot on descriptors!

They brought the 10 to the USA this year for $160.00 retail. Cheers Jason

My favorite is the Nikka Taketsuru pure malt. I too wish pricing was better on these. It’s just so very expensive now. I’m glad I got one of these at retail a couple of years ago.

You said if you want grain whisky from Nikka you go to The Chita...The Chita is Suntory's grain distillery, not Nikka's. The Chita is what makes up Hibiki once it's blended with Hakushu and Yamazaki.

Yoichi is definitely my favorite, followed by Hakushu 12 from Suntory. I want to try the sherry cask Fukano which is rice whisky, I've heard it's unique.
