China turned from a dirt poor postwar country to the 2nd largest economy entity for a reason. Yes China is still lagging behind when it comes to democracy and such. But if your impression of China is on the same level of North Korea, you seriously need to have your info updated. China is more like 5% of the elites leading the rest of country forward. The upside of one major party is kind of similar to having only one CEO but with board members in a large company, it's easier to carry out the long term consistent policies that are right for the country.

ppl keep saying that china's lagging behind in democracy assuming that's what the chinese population or any population wants. But then it turned out that most chinese prefer their own houses before voting, or if they already own one, then a better or a second house. I think technology and products produced in Shenzen can be said as one of innovation product because Shenzen is the first city ever that named as National Self-Innovation Demonstration Zone. shenzhen has long placed innovation as a leading strategy in its development by using innovation to improve the quality of both economic and industrial development.
    1. They have open source and they create new/latest product innovation and it
is not solely for the market but it is to gain and develop new ideas for high and
middle technology in the new era. - For example, from the documentary video itself they innovates phone from previous or new produced phone to different specification according to their customer
requirement. The most surprising part is they already succeed in imitates
phone that are not yet release in the market. Fast pace technology helps them
to growth new innovation faster than any advanced country. As they also create no just for the market but for their ideas and hobby.
    2. They have everything you need to get things done. Every equipment are
available in the store. If in the west you need approximately 9 to 12 months to
get equipment shipment to fully finish your prototype but in china only 3
months you can get things done. As fast as lightning or even faster than that. -For example, in Huaqiangbei there is more than 800-900 stores inside the
building itself. As Malaysian, if you think Plaza Lowyat have every technology
you need imagine living in China specifically in Shenzhen and Huaqiangbei. On top of that, regardless any age you are, you can create new innovation based on what is in the market. They teach kids at age of 8 years old to start building and learning to use coding/programming. One of the kid managed to create one software to remind his mom to pick up the key whenever she is going out. Every day is a new day of innovation product produce at there.

Pretty cool to see how cosmopolitan it has become. I do hope that the city always keeps a bit of its Cantonese language, its (方言?), and culture, It has seemed to me like most communication there is in Mandarin(Putonghua) now, which in some ways, as the national form of the language (語言?), makes sense seeing as it has transcended merely being regional centre. Just don't loose too much of your past chasing the future.
As a Canadian, I find it funny how people get all butthurt about how someone else is finally doing well. If you're doing well, just don't be a dick about it and don't degrade all those whom you 'perceive' as below or behind you. A lot of Americans, and now Chinese, seem to be bad at this. Power and hubristic pride are intoxicating. If you're not doing so well, or not as well as you would like, don't feel like you need to tear other people down to feel better, as if standing on rubble actually makes you taller.

Whatever people's view of the communist party run Chinese government, you can't deny its superb record in turning China from a poor developing country into a global superpower. China is now a global leader in innovation & tech, with rising global Chinese brands. It's all down to the wise policies of the Chinese government, they invested huge amount on education, science, research & development, infrastructure, supporting industries & the future industries. Unlike America, China invest in its people & its future. While America by contrast invest not in its people, but on the military & fighting wars it cannot win. That's why China is so successful & is on its way or is already no1 global power.

The time lapse shots are remarkable. If the creator is around, what kit did you use for those?

Shenzhen municipal gov. sponsored expats vlogging, exaggerating anything they found "advance" which turned out not much different from the rest of the world

Not banned there, I had no issues what so ever recording anywhere some even asked me to start recording.
Heck even the police is up for a selfie or answering a question or two on video.
